Car in estate with no tax/insurance/nct

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice. Just been down to the mothers house, there is a car parked opposite her driveway that has been there for weeks and has moved a couple of times along the road but always appears opposite her driveway.

Her neighbour says that someone living further down has it up for sale. The car has no nct or tax or insurance. Is there any point reporting it to the guards? Are they likely to come seize the car for no tax?

I know that but my main question is what are the guards actually likely to do! I've seen them seize cars on the road for no tax but will they bother to get a truck out to lift a car left in an estate. They should, but you know the guards!

Is it actually blocking anyone or causing an inconvenience?

    Have the reg,make and model.

What is your problem with the car apart from no tax ?

I was going to drop in on my way past tomorrow morning with the reg and details of tax disc etc.

It's not blocking anyone's driveway but it's a narrow road and parked directly accross from her driveway so getting in and out is more difficult than if it wasn't there

You dont need to call guards.

You call the Council. They will put a fine on the car. if the car is not moved onto Private property it will be towed.

Not unless the car is causing an obstruction or danger (which doesn't seem to be the case) or it has been abandoned (which does seem to be the case either).

So the council won't tow it, but if the guards catch you driving with out tax they impound your car but won't tow a car parked with no tax?

Jesus, some people are some doses. Is the car being driven around? What's the problem? How do you know the person isn't insured to drive it? Have you requested them to produce their documents

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭ofcork

They shouldnt be driving it with no tax/nct/insurace displayed!!

They generally contact the registered owner first and give them a chance to move it or tax it, assuming it's a public road (maintained by the council). If it's not a public road then no tax is due.

There is a house up the road from me. I've seen people come and go, I don't actually know them at all. They have a car !!! I don't know if the car is taxed or even insured or NCT'd... From the look of them (you know the sort) they probably don't even pay water charges. There is a satellite dish on the house as well, and I don't know who put it up there, but I wonder do they have a television licence. The lights in the house are always on late as well....
Who should I report them to.. the Garda, Council... Stasi ??

Well firstly I have a couple of issues with this car.

    1) it's not taxed. It's illegal to have a car on a public road not taxed. I pay my motor tax, why shouldn't they?!
2)no nct, same reason as above.
    3) they could park the car in front of their driveway but have chosen not to, for what ever reason, but I find that people that engage in that sort of behaviour generally are the more anti social of neighbours who don't give a crap about anyone else around them.

See here's where your argument falls at the first hurdle. I do know the car is not taxed, and I do know it has no nct or insurance, because there's these handy discs that you put in your windscreen so you can tell if a car is taxed etc.

Some people don't feel like they should obey the law like the rest of us. Why should they get away with it?

Are there any other laws you think are OK to break? Or just the tax, insurance and nct ones? You OK with vrt? Licences? Seatbelts?

Its not a big deal, but it is an issue. If that car is out on the road and clips your car, you think they'll stick around and fess up?

The rest of us may not want to be involved in your petty obsession with a car parked across the road from your mammy.

    That depends

    I had this situation before

A Guy owned 3 cars, all without tax parked on the estate outside his house.

the problem was the houses facing his also parked there Taxed cars on the road.

This meant only one car could pass between the cars.

I saw the Binmen, Ambulances and Oil trucks struggle to get between the cars, sometimes cm between wing mirrors.

I didnt call the council but someone did and he got fines and warnings stuck on his cars.

    I was delighted :)

We all have the right to live without abandoned cars on the street surely. There is two in my estste. Ones there so long that the rust dripping from it has stained the tarmac.

The OP is spot on here. You don't live in you own private universe. There's laws and common decency there to ensure we all have better lives. Cars cost money and you can't just park them up when you can be bothered with them any more.

There is no shame in decent people eporting illegally activity. Never has been.

just call the Garda Confidential line and say you have concerns about an apparently abandoned car. They may or may not do something

The car could be insured, you have no way of knowing it's not, if there's no disk then all you know is that there's no disk.

That is the most pathetic message I've ever seen written on boards. And that's REALLY saying something. If you don't want to be involved in a thread, then don't comment on it you sad sad individual.

Just said I'd jump in here and add that this kind of behaviour on Boards really gets my goat. As Turtle said, why would you bother saying anything if you're going to just be mean here?

Anytime I've ever posted on here I've said it'll be my last time. For every helpful post you get at least 10 replies either starting an argument or just being completely unhelpful.

There really is a certain type of sad individual that inhabits boards in particular, that I've not encountered anywhere else on the Internet.

Cut too close to the bone for you. Why not man up and talk to the guy who owns car instead of seeking encouragement and support to report someone for at best would be minor motor tax offence for a car that is not been driven.

You don't know any of these things, at the moment one of my cars has no disc in it despite being insured.

They could have the tax and Nct disc in the house after having to produce it and forgetting to put them back in the car. Unlikely but possible, honestly it's not obstructing you so mind your own business, surely you have more important things in life to worry about?

Mate, it's a lovely day out, I suggest you close the Internet and head out and get some fresh air, clear your head and maybe socialise yourself a bit, because you're making a fool of yourself.

I know their tax disc says its out of date since 05-15, insurance is out of date since 08-15 and there no nct displayed. 3 offences there. Why should sone people pay tax, ins and nct and others should be allowed dodge the laws they feel don't apply to them?

What's someone breaking into my house got to do with anything?

I can only imagine the type of person you are looking in people's windscreens to make sure they've paid their road tax. Poking your nose in. Leave it up to the guards. If you see someone actually driving the car, report them. Just parked up - mind your own business.

No, I put a bag of rubbish on top of my wheelie bin last week instead of inside it. Didn't want him reporting me to the council.

Because you obviously think that people should keep their heads down and not look out for anti social behaviour or the like in their area. Leaving a cat untaxed on a public road is illegal, leaving it parked outside someone else's house in inspconsiderate and is the type of behaviour of people that don't give a **** about anyone other than themselves.

I recently put my car back on the road and haven't received a tax disc yet. That doesn't mean I'm not allowed to drive it

It's an offence to have a car on a public road without displaying a valid tax disc.

I'd be fairly sure that the owners new tax disc has been in the post since May 2015

You have 10 days to produce it to the Gardai. They may have taxed it but not bothered to put it in because the car hasn't been used.
