At least 15 people were killed and another 20 wounded at a shooting on Thursday at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon, media reported.

CNN said the shooter had been detained.

A spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff's department confirmed to Reuters that there was a shooting at the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg. The spokeswoman had no further details.

Can't remember who said it but they believed that if the public had seen some of the images from the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting (not necessarily bodies, but the classrooms), there would have been a nationwide drive to change their existing laws.

Fact is, if the US can't introduce a single change in the law after a guy killed 20 children with a carbine, nothing will ever, ever change.

It is sad to say, but it is really not shocking at this point, it is terrible when it happens, but it is just happening too often, I have family in Chicago and there have been dozens of shootings there in the last couple of months and nearly 20 in one weekend, admittedly not in a large grouping like this, but it is barely making the news over there.

According to Sky News the shooter has still not been apprehended or that 20 are dead and many more injured and the shooter was female and killed, they really need to vet these guys they are interviewing.

Yeah it's tragic but I don't think any gun laws will change at a federal level. The NRA have too much power in congress. If Sandy Hook wasn't enough to bring about change then nothing will, strange they were able to take the guy alive, normally the people who do this want to die in process. Watching it live, they have interviewed 3 different people from the area and they are all giving a different report of what has happened, a bit of flip flopping going with the presenters as well.

One even said that a paramedic, who is friends with his wife told her that that shooter was female, all seems like hearsay so far with these locals they are interviewing.

Whilst I wouldn't be surprised to see the media latch onto 4chan as being the root cause of the shooting, not everyone who uses the site engages in that sort of posting and the various boards attract all sorts.

There's a slim chance that the person on 4chan wasn't the shooter, but it feels like too much of a convenience for it not to be them. I completely agree that the dregs of society only use 4chan. Wonder how many of the people encouraging them now realize that they are now indirectly (though, possibly more directly) responsible for those deaths - or - more accurately - do they care?

Chicago actually has some of the strictest gun laws in the U.S. The problem there is guns illegally obtained by gang members. Banning guns won't stop people getting them illegally. I don't know what the cause of the problem is, it seems there is something fundamentally wrong with American society, but it's a little late for changing the law considering there are hundreds of millions of privately owned guns in the country.

It is the mindset of owning/using a gun. I met a guy kept one in his car in case he was "jacked." Another couple of guys I knew (lived beside) treated their guns like they were pets and reminisced about their first gun. The older bloke (70's) had the attitude that if anyone broke into his house he'd blow them away. "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" was his motto. Pretty representative of a large number of the population I would think.
