Can I ask how were the riders selected?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

I'd be very pleasantly amazed if Sam was able to be in the hunt on this circuit over such a distance. Rather than an obvious standout, seems to me like any one of many could win this. Didn't see the women's race but judging from the men's u23's, every chance of someone getting clear of the pack over those cobbled climbs late on, e.g. Terpstra, Stybar, GregVA, etc, etc. Alternatively the likes of Kristoff hoping it's together but that surely depends on dry conditions. Rain & it'll be fooking mayhem.

    The best available riders

Just to add. There is a formal process that will look at available riders at the elite level. They will also consider the course for events such as the World's. It's not simply a matter of picking the best available riders but also consideration should be given to how they would ride as as team to produce the best chances of success at national team rather than individual rider level

We discussed extensively this team selection in the main thread on the Worlds. The 2 top riders are simply not available and this selection is probably looking as much at future development rather than considering riders who perhaps could do a job but are unlikely to ever break through on the world stage.

Kristoff is favourite at quite short price, presumably based on his classics form this year.
Threw the few coppers e/w on Alaphillippe at long odds.

Kirby just referred to us a minor nation. The ****$$$.

Coming from a country that took years to get a Tour de France victory.

The picture quality is not acceptable for a World championship race. I'll dip in and out during the day but if it stays like that for the business end of the race then it will be hard to watch without chucking something at the TV!

Have a few bob on GVA. Course suits him.

    Sticking with my original 3:

    Boassen Hagen @33/1
    Greg Van NearlyhaveIt @10/1
    Terpstra @40/1

Although this could turn into a complete lottery. Wud be delighted if Greipel did it, and top 10 for Sam Bennet wud be fantastic

Every time someone complains about Carlton Kirby I'm going to say to myself, "Carlton Kirby is a legend. I love him infinitely."

    Matthews @ 12/1
    GVA @ 14/1
    Sep VM @ 66/1

    Two small random bets on
    Jose Goncalves @ 200/1
    Navardauskas @ 80/1

I'll be an out of it for most of the day. Good to see an Irish interest in the break

What is the issue with us being called a minor nation? Am I missing an in-joke?

    I'm watching it on BBC.
    I miss Carlton.

Put on BBC for a minute there. It's the Lizzie Armistad tribute hour.

Shocking that the Britisith Broadcasting Coperation (or what ever BBC stands far) would be signing the praises of the new British world champion

    Classic from the Eurosport commentator.

He's just told us that Edgar Allen Poe who spent his childhood in Richmond apparently wrote a story called "The Crow".

Don't understand why people complain so much about the commentary...

If you had to talk constantly for 6 hours of cycling coverage I'm sure you'd come out with the occasional bit of crap. I quite enjoy Carlton Kirby's commentary and random tangents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,561 ✭✭✭Eamonnator

Before the U.C.I. award the World Road Race Championships to a city, they should satisfy themselves that the organisation will be able to transmit television pictures of a reasonable and consistent quality.

I'm not really complaining, just passing time, until the action kicks off.

yeah its been consistently patchy, always switching between feeds once it starts glitching. how can the tour manage it so well and these lads cant on a much smaller circuit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 172 ✭✭scott.s

Ah wasn't targeted at you really. Just seen too many moaning comments in the last few days.

Anyway, this should be a good race. Glad to see Conor Dunne up in the break and Bennett sitting comfy in the pack.

    .

There are 7 hours to fill and Kirby talks alot of rubbish...mostly as if he he knows everything about everything

Mind you I like Matt Stephens alot...he manages to talk fro hours without being a pain in the ass and sound like he is from the 13th century

Dan and Nico have at least finished the Worlds regularly ....

Remember Da Roche won Giro, Tour then Worlds despite being tired"
Kelly won and rode everything from Feb through to the end of the season
    Proper cyclists :)

Froomey abandoned the Worlds a couple of years ago cos it was raining. That was pretty good.

Kirby " Valverde has been told at the breakfast table that it will be every man from himself" " And Other Spansih riders to Valverde " No mate I am not riding for you"

That there is the made up rubbish I am talking about
He has no access to these discussions and do you think that the Spanish riders make up their own mind about who rides for who and Valverde is very liked by his Spanish team mates except by Purito and that is competition
    Valverde is Spain's best option

Kirby should not make up rubbish and be so biased both against and for riders (Cadel Evans,Attapuma,Froome) and treat us like we are stupid

The Worlds is largely a war of attrition.
Fascinating to watch even when nothing seems to be happening....

Did I express surprise, shock or displeasure?

It was a comment on what was on bbc at the time versus what was on eurosport. Look for offense elsewhere.

The longer this goes on the less likely I see a bunch sprint. I'm defining bunch as anything over 30 riders. I'm happy my money is on GVA.
