Box on Floor of New i6 Coaches?

On these new bus eireann coaches there is a metal box fitted under the first row of seats which makes the 2nd row of seats the most uncomfortable seats in the fleet because legroom is non existent.

Does anyone know what these metal boxes are for? Are they for the AVLS? or CCTV camera recording equipment? On older buses this equipment is fitted in the overhead storage areas.

Surely on such expensive buses they could put this metal box somewhere it would not impact on passenger comfort?

    Are they the wheel wells?

That was my first thought about them but they don't extend to the side of the bus. I'm convinced now they are for the CCTV or AVLS equipment (fitted by bus eireann?) As other buses have similar metal boxes fitted in the overhead space.

Let's not get into such discussions. :)

Could it be an air conditioning unit or heater?

some kind of over floor access to the engine maybe? a very long shot i know, but i've been on various models of busses in my younger years with the engines in many different and strange places

Not unless access requires a raised "box" with a cover that seems to be loose and rattles when the people in the 2nd row of seats kick against it as it is exactly where their feet should be.

It is under the seats just inside the door and is so placed that it affects the positioning of the footrests for people in row 2 who are then uncomfortable for the entire journey unless they are less than 4' tall.

It may well just be poor bus design or poor placement of Bus Eireann additions like AVLS, either way more should be expected of such expensive vehicles.
