2008 Macbook booting to blackscreen

I switched on my Macbook after it was left unused for a year, and all I got was a black screen. It sounded like the hard disk was spinning, there was something going on anyway.

I removed the battery and tried again and it worked. But it has since stopped working again and removing the battery doesn't help anymore.

Is it a gonner? Or is it possible to fix?

Can you connect an external monitor to it ?
