Do you leave candles unattended?

My housemates do it all the time and it makes me nervous. Sometimes they'll light a candle in the sitting room or hall and leave it lighting then go to their room. My mam drummed it into me growing up to never leave candles unattended so sometimes I just blow them out..

What are your thoughts AH? Would you leave a candle unattended?

So you sometimes leave a candle unattended? What would your mam think?

I only do it when I subconsciously intend to burn the house and everyone in it down to the ground.

Successful employee relations at the ESB has led to the increase in unattended and unwanted candles.

I sleep every night with a tea light in a proper glass bowl. Obviously it would be the only thing on top of the locker at the far side of the room. Love falling asleep with the flicker in the room.

I only do it when they aren't lit.

To be honest, being smart about where the candle is placed, in what and on what surface is more important than not leaving them unattended.

Also how long does she go to her room for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,258 ✭✭✭deandean

Yea I sometimes leave them in the car while I am shopping. But I leave a window cracked open a bit.

I leave my candles unattended all the time. Only use tea lights in proper holders and just let them burn out, as you can never relight them if you blow them out.

When a fire starts to burn, theres a lesson you must learn. Something something, then you'll see, you'll avoid catastrophe!

FYI if you are in private rented accommodation. Im 100% certain if you have a contract, one of the conditions is no open flames eg fires, candles. If your landlord sees them, expect a warning from them

I know its your home etc. But cheap candles destroy paint work eg I had to paint a room from a tenant using cheap candles. They leave a black soot. I also dont know how many people who had house fires from candles.

I would tell your roommates to bin. If they want a scent in their room. Buy a plug in

How do you mean you can't relight them if you blow out a tea light? You can of course?

Yeah, as long as it's in a suitable container that won't melt or go on fire, and can't topple, it's fine.

I'm constantly at that. I've often left the house completely forgetting I've a candle burning and had to turn back around.

I'd be more worried about a plug in starting a fire, to be honest.

Nah, put up a fireguard properly and it's fine to leave them unattended.

If they are in a big jar on a flat surface then yes.

my neighbour rang me in a panic a couple of years ago, when her Tea light candle holder ornamental thing went on fire.

It looked a bit like this

The candles are supposed to be placed in at different levels, and of course what happened was the lower candles heated the bases of the ones above it, turning the wax to liquid, which then dripped down onto the lower candles causing the thing to go on fire.

Very poorly designed and could have set her house on fire had she left it unattended for any length of time.

Unless it's left close to curtains or some other flammable material, its safe enough to leave a candle burning I'm sure? I do like a nice scented candle, I've never heard of them covering a room in soot. Sounds like an exaggeration tbh!

Having said that, I got some battery powered flame less candles for some lanterns in the garden. They're great, remote control to turn them on and off and everything and they look realistic.

I used to date a girl who was in ''That train of thought'' Club. She bought me 2 ties once and I came downstairs wearing one. Do you not like the other one ? She hurtfully asked ? ? ?

I'll sometimes light a candle if I'm trying an eyes-open mindfulness meditation. If I catch my mind starting to wander, then I'll use a combination of focusing on the flame and my breath to gently return to the practice.

I'd always blow it out when I'm finished though. I'd never leave it unattended either. That would be a strong case of mindlessness.

Yeah, I sometimes have tealights in the bathroom and I wouldn't be in there. They're in a glass holder and away from anything flammable so I'm not too worried.

We might have the same mother OP. I had health and safety things drilled into me as a child that I will never be able to forget.

Buy sure if it stops the house burning down how bad.

I always leave unattended candles lighting, 'cause if they aren't lit my stupid fcuker of a dog eats them.

Why are tea lights called tea lights?

Because they leave black rings on your expensive coffee table when an idiot leaves them on the wood without putting something underneath them

    that's why

A housemates girlfriend caused a fire by leaving scented candles lite and unattended on top of the TV in his room. They were watching TV downstairs.

When the fire was discovered he threw clothes in the sink, doused them in water and was going to throw them over the fire. I had to stop him as it being electrical he could have killed himself.

They dont taste like tea and singe my beard when I try to drink them.

I no longer have a nasal hair problem though.

I do, once they are in a proper container then its not a problem.

My mother lights scented candles in the bathrooms and sitting room in my home place nearly everyday and they burn away for hours on their own, only seen when people go to the bathroom never had an issue, just use proper holders.

Why are tea lights called tea lights?

If you ever go for afternoon tea they'll put the teapots on a stand above tea lights that keep it warm. I always assumed that was why.
