Mention Sherpa Leyland Daf or LDV to me and all i can think of is that horrendous yoke I had the misfortune of driving for 12 months while in the ESB back in the 90s. The 200 series van. Would go on 2 wheels going around corners and roundabouts. Woeful steering lock no PSteering pitiful heater and fan. Roof Too high for messing with ladders.

Remember the Leyland Sherpa van with sliding front doors!

I remember all the imported ex-royal mail vans had that!

I would say that as with SsangYong , Harris will struggle to sell these . Think they look well and the maxus was supposed to drive well but would you risk ur money on one ? - resale ??.
as with SsangYong they are not really any cheaper than other brands so why bother ?

speaking of SsangYong , would I be right in saying they aren't selling very well ?

I remember in early 2000s maybe 2004 being in the UK and they were everywhere I remember being in one as an airport shuttle and this one was new and didn't feel to smooth. I mean 17,250 plus vat isn't exactly bargain cheap that what about 5k euro cheaper than a transit or master.

Ford don't even list the full size transit on their website
    What's with that

I wonder is this to do with European shortage of vans maybe they've temporary stopped sending them to Ireland. Although I've seen lwb transit in new model but not the jumbo size below that.

I've seen them about alright too. Awful looking from the back. Cool and American looking from the front.

I don't like the clocks in the centre of the dash in the LDV vans above. The only car I thought that kind of suited was the xtrail. I mean if they proved reliable they would probably take of in Ireland as people are generally not as duly say about vans as cars as it's generally the companies buying them and they want the overall cheapest option. God knows what they will be like under heavy high mileage use time will tell.

Saw one in cork on sat whats that saic motor badge about on them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,316 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

They're the Chinese company that bought mg and ldv.

Ssanyong don't have the Tivoli listed on their website, I think iloviT.

As for the Saic LDV, they were originally a Daewoo design bought by LDV and then shipped to China and now they've turned up here.

They were ****e when they were built in the UK, I hope they learned to screw them together. The engine owes it's origins to the 1990s and I've no doubts about that after hearing it running I thought a 90s Transit was pulling up beside me

That's not a great start so. In 2015 it's kind of expected that a new van would have a reasonably refined engine and not sound like a 90s transit which sounded horrid. All the competition have refined enough engines that are generally quite economical.

On the plus side a 1990 transit engine is very reliable. Not sure it would be fitted with that engine these days though.

It's the same vm 2.5 that jeep had in the recent Grand Cherokee and the London taxi. but not the same as the Kia Sorento.

At least they have cruise control, parking sensors and a/c they are 3 important useful features for any van to have. At 136bhp and 330nm of torque they should be nippy enough to drive well empty anyway.

What's in them in pretty straight forward, nothing overcomplicated. It'll all depend how well they been screwed together and rust proofed

I'd be skeptical about them tbh. Don't think I'd spend 17k on one.

In fairness it's an unknown brand from an untested market. I'd be sceptical too but it could be an interesting alternative. If the mechanics are simple and rugged and the van is cheap to buy I can see it selling here. It needs to price itself for it to gain acceptance

Those LDV vans are everywhere here in New Zealand. Along with Great Walls, Foton and Cherry they are buckets of Chinese ****e and horrible to drive..

I heard from 2 sources in N.Z. that the Chinese stuff is rusting like a 70's Toyota in a salt factory.
