In the "Eir" thread someone wondered about who has land lines these days and its a good question. I've not had a line for about 5 years now, I've not once thought I could do with one since then.

I've got one but it's never plugged in, only got it for internet.
Who needs to be talking to telemarketers all day.

We got rid of the land line last year - don't miss it at all. Four mobiles in the house.

    Yes.

Got rid of it last year. Had a hairy moment when the Three network was down for a day and realised we'd no way of contacting anyone in an emergency, but thankfully there wasn't one!
Since then have devised an emergency plan involving calling in to a neighbour to use their phone! Just like people used to do in the olden days :)

Yeah, it comes with the router.

Yep, it's included in our internet and TV plan so even tho we hardly EVER use it there was basically no saving to be made in getting rid of it :(

Havent had or needed one for over 5 years now,3 mobiles and standalone broadband in the house

Yeah, mobile coverage is rubbish so the landline is kept.

No mobile reception here so certainly have a landline.

Yes. I use it to ring my mobile when I can't find it.

I have the UPC landline package thing. It is only used for 'Windows' to call me about pc problems. I would not want to miss their call.

Saves on having to call the Samaritans when the loneliness gets to you. Nothing like a chat with Rajiv about the old viruses this weather.

If we didn't we'd be completely cut off.

We have shoite mobile reception and shoite broadband - 2Mb if the wind is in the right direction.

    Welcome to Ireland's Outback.

Got one as part of a package UPC deal. Day one it rang three times from marketeers, disconnected immediately.

I remember when we first got a landline as a kid. Came home from gaelic practice and the house was packed with neighbours checking out our sweet hook-up. Good times.

I have one because 'eir' bundled it with the broadband. However, I haven't plugged a phone into it and I don't use it for anything.

I might look into ditching it.

I'm happy enough with efibre / eirFibre.

Do they sell it without the phone?

Yup, it's part of the bb package. We pay £5pm for unlimited landlines calls to Ireland (Skype is a bit beyond the mothers capabilities)

I asked the auld pair would they not pack theirs in, pointed out the cost savings. Mam agreed but said she'll wait til Granny dies. "She's been ringing this number for 25 years, I'm not going to confuse the poor woman at this stage in life." Fair enough

Get the granny hotline ported over to VoIP.

We live in a mobile black spot so having a landline is essential.
It's on a deal with unlimited BB for €45 a month.

pfff Landlines, I'm a hipster so I use morse code.

A house isn't a home without a phone. Ours seldom rings, but it's good to have.

Are there any internet-only deals out there so we could drop the phone, keep internet, and save money?

    Yes.

Because my mam thinks ringing a southern mobile means she may have to re-mortgage her house.

Took one off UPC that comes with the BB .....just to save 7.50 off the bill, go figure

never had a phone connected to it

I used to have fibreoptic internet that didn't require a landline, but since I moved here I've had to pay for one from BT, as there isn't anything else available here.

I have one because UPC made me take it. They will be a long time waiting before I make any calls from it.

I was cleaning out a horders house for a bit of extra beer money yesterday and among all the crap was a stack of old phone books. The current phone book compared to those from years ago is about one third of the size. Even the yellow pages is slimmer, I guess these days you reach for google before the yellow pages and businesses can't be bothered paying for a listing like they used to.

same here, poll should have that in it.

I have no doorbell the last 10 years either, never missed it and would remove it if I moved house to one with it.

needs a new poll as most people that i know with a landline have it as its part of their internet package, but never used or plugged in, so poll is a bit miss leading.

It used to cost 10k to take out a full page ad in the golden pages:rolleyes:

Yeah, it came with the internet and tv (the tv comes through the same box). I use it a lot, 35 euro a month for internet, tv and telephone, and that includes free landline calls to all national and European numbers. Very handy for calling home to Ireland. Well worth it.
Oh and on the same deal, I have a mobile phone with 3 hours a month of calls and unlimited texts so it's very good value all round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,965 ✭✭✭CelticRambler

Yep. Part of the broadband bundle, including free VOIP calls to everywhere in the world. Well, anywhere I'm likely to call. Gets used sporadically but intensely - mainly for three-hour phone calls to the absent relatives (I suppose technically, I'm the absent relative) - but also by visitors who don't want to burn through a few hundred pounds/euros/dollars when mobile roaming.

It also means I can get away with a dirt-cheap mobile tarif - 0€/mo!

Can't get a landline, have asked repeatedly - we are 400 yards from neighbours either side who are connected to different exchanges, both about 6km distant. It seems they don't have any spare pairs on the cable bundles coming out from these exchanges. In any case, neither of them can get a decent DSL service.

I was offered a wireless connection by Eir(com)- yippee I thought, then I was told it would only support 28k dial up. This was 3 YEARS AGO! Currently have a patchy 2MB fixed wireless service from a local provider.

Only hope for decent broadband is fibre to a local cabinet or FTTH with the National Broadband Plan.

    :D

50MB of data goes an incredibly long way with WhatsApp.

(admittedly I also have a pre-pay O2/Three sim for when I'm not in France ... must have put at least a tenner on it last year ... :pac: )

I have one, I'm very anal about completing forms and always want to have an answer for:

    Phone Number:
    Mobile Number:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

Got one with UPC and it's bloody handy. Installed the app on my phone that allows me to make the free calls to landlines and mobiles whenever I'm on a WiFi network. Also if anyone was to ring my house it'll divert to my mobile but the only people who ring are the Microsoft scammers.

I used it when I was in America, free calls and the quality was perfect. Was funny to confuse people because I was ringing from America but my Irish house number was showing up on their caller ID :pac:
