    true.

it is the most generic model of an iconic name but i think we will look back on them fondly some day all the same. on the face of things they are a bit ugly but when you really study them, the styling is arguably quite nice.

i am going on my holibobs in August and if i can get the car sold for anything in excess of €1k it will cover the cost of my holiday i'l take that. if it's still with me come August i will happily park it beside the Glanza and keep it; as "adverts.ie" cliche as that sounds.

it's like a good girlfriend that you still need to break up with. i'd like to see it go on to be happy again with a new owner :P

i'd like the extra cash but i don't need it, thankfully.

Why in the world are people so anxious to avoid showing their number plates?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

because it probably hasn't been taxed in 8 years

€400 probably gets it (if you're daring to be that cheeky). Cheap peace of mind if you live in a hilly / remote area. From the looks of the weather today - winter is coming! :p

Bought this for family member today. Few dings on it but seems good!
I had one of these from new from 2005 to 2013 and zero issues. Beyond not sexy!!
Still hunting for a second cheap car. The mileage on this can't be right!

It'd never have made it to that mileage if it was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,872 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Even if it burnt a litre of oil every 1000km, just keep topping it up with cheap oil and don't bother with the annual oil service :p

Very cheap car from a dealer and at that kinda money, with an established dealer, the small claims court is a serious backup should things go wrong

Perfect bangernomics if you need a sizeable car but have only the tiniest of budgets for purchase / maintenance...

Anything else in particular to watch out for ?
There is a 1.6 strata avensis for sale locally with only 70k and one owner. It's 2005 and it's going for just under 2k. Would be sensible motoring I'm thinking.

As an M54 owner, I just buy my oil in bulk.

    Or replace the leaky seals.

Hardly worth it in a bangernomics Eventless.

It's generally bore wear that causes those vvti's to burn oil afaik.

some screw holes where taxi radio was possibly mounted? (beside fan controls)

or maybe just old mobile phone holder/charger

Picked up a new banger last night, a 2003 Saab 9-3 1.8T with 130k on the clock for €1300 plus my old 1999 9-3 hatch which was just out of NCT and needed more doing to it than it was worth. She's the Linear trim spec so no leather but she has air-con, nice alloys, trip computer, a nice stereo and I got my Parrot hands free kit stripped from the old car and installed in this one as part of the deal.

    391709.jpg

It's probably a little on the pricey side for what it is, but it came with a fresh NCT and, since I bought it from Dara McCormack, has just had a thorough going over by a specialist who had been maintaining the car for it's previous owner for the past few years. He was also kind enough to throw a few quid worth of fuel into her for me.

She's not as pretty as the older 9-3, but she's a much better car to drive and with the A/C will be far easier to live with. Lesson learned, never again buy a black car without it!

Error (probably) in service specification --> wrong grade of oil used --> insufficient flow of oil --> oil piston rings seizure --> oil burning. :)

On a €400 Toyota there's no way I'd even invest €55 in an NCT :p

After the test is up, I'd dump it for beer money (but significantly more than scrap money). Thousands of people around who would bite my hand off for it :D
