Damp Squib Possible in Irish Champion Stakes

I really hope they don't get too much rain at Leopardstown today and tomorrow, as soft ground would be a disaster for the Champion Stakes - "The Race Of The Year". All of the top 4 in the betting (Golden Horn, Free Eagle, The Grey Gatsby and Gleneagles) could (probably would) be pulled if the going was soft, which must be a strong possibility at this stage. We could end up with a 3 or 4 runner race!

They're due a deluge this evening. I'm 5 minutes away from the course and the clouds do not look good!

    MET.ie forecast for Dublin
    May not be too bad

    Tonight
The rain will ease and become intermittent at times later in the night. Lowest temperatures 9 to 12 Celsius with moderate to fresh southeast winds veering southwest to west late in the night or during the early morning.

    Tomorrow

Cloudy, misty and wet on Saturday morning with the rain persistent at times. However, drier and brighter weather will develop during the early afternoon with sunny spells at times and a risk of few scattered showers. Top temperatures 14 or 15 Celsius, with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds.

There is no way that Golden Horn will run. Gleneagles will probably run if Golden Horn pulls out early. It's bucketing down out here but has been quite dry of late so maybe the ground has some soakage. I would imagine that with the history of Golden Horn and Gleneagles, the grounds people have been quite relaxed on giving the ground much water this week.

I'd have to say it is the other way round
Gosden says Golden Horn runs if it good to soft or better
    Won't run if it soft
No chance Gleneagles will run given what AOB and Coolmore have stated previously if he does It'll be Tabor,Magnier and Smith forcing AOB to run
Some weekends racing ahead I fancy AOB to win both Legers abit wary of Agent Murphy in Irish Leger

Emotionless is the nearest thing to a certainty in first at Newmarket tomorrow there very short got 11/10 with Paddy lastnight
Tananza D.Weld Aga Khan bred 2 year I think is abit special according to Weld prefers cut yet handled Good to Firm in his 2 wins only does enough
Showed a serious turn of foot the last day to go past a good AOB 2 year old think it was Alice Springs

Unfortunately I'd have to imagine that at least one of the three year olds will pull out. The weather has been fairly atrocious in Dublin all evening

Doubt either of them will run in that case

It's a case of what might have been with both of these horses. Coolmore took Gleneagles out of the Sussex and the ground ended up being no worse than good. Gosden took Golden Horn out of the King George and a donkey of Cumani's ended up winning it. Time is running out for both of them and there's not much left to go for. Serves them right.

Still reckon Golden Horn will take the beating if Gosden lets him run.

Been reliably informed that Roachdale House in the last at Leopardstown has been its target since switching stables to Dermot Weld. Very nice run last time out should mean this is fit as a flea for today. Will relish the trip and cut in the ground. 11/1 best price now - will be nowhere near that at the off.

Seriously fancy windsor park in the premier handicap. 14/1 with 4 places a smashing bet imo

I was wondering do you think Smullen choosing to ride Silwanna has any bearing on this. He rode WP last time out when winning. He also rode Benkie last time out and won and was 2nd on his mount when 10l behind fields of athenry.
I think he feels the best horse of the bunch is Silwanna.
Having said that Im going for AOB horse in this carrying bottom weight and Anistasia claiming another few lbs to get it below 8st. JOB is riding for halford in this and I think Its good tactics by AOB to get her on board Sherlock Holmes and do a job on this field.
    9/1 best price.

Having a small bet on Pleascach in the big one just because i think the 16/1 is great value. I think Bolger has being always aiming for this one and might just have him ready with a great run of form.

Cape wolf in the last Stands out for me in the last at lep too. 10/1 atm but i think will be shorter before the off.

    happy punting people

Ger Lyons could have a very good day here today too with Colin keane on some good horses.

Western Boy in the 4.40 for me, won't mind the cut in the ground at all and is available at 10/1 with Powers

I think my old favourite clockmaker may welll go close in the second at chester. Waa drawn wide last run and used an awful lot of energy getting to the front in the early stages. Drawn 3 today and at 14/1 looks a bit of value to me. Pillar to post victory hopefully. 1 pt win.

Lady lunchalot in the second last at lingfield looks like a bit of value as well at 16/1. Favorite looks strong so a bet in the w/o fav market may be most prudent. 1pt win 1 pt win w/o fav 9/1 betfair sportsbook

In the second at donny tangerine trees looks the standout value with bet365 33/1 5 places. Down to a mark of 90. Won off 93 at the start of the season. 1 pt ew

Legatissimo could be vulnerable in the Matron - soft ground, dropping back to a mile and she's been beaten twice at the track. Amazing Maria could be a bit of value at 11/4.

E/w 20/1 has to be backed

Can't understand how an Ebor fifth is only a point longer than a Derby third and an Irish Derby runner up. Storm The Stars for me.

What! No bet. Lovely assumption though.

If jockeys think they can just make a gap thats not there, then the rules may as well not be in place.

Would be thrown out in France, and rightly so.

Jack Mitchell interfered with 6 horses in a race and got 8 days for it

Bans and no further action id say

I beginning to think you that you are the one talking through your pocket.

What a thing to say to someone!

It was blatant. This isnt a feckin 5 grand apprentices handicap. The rules are the rules. You sit and suffer, you dont make gaps, by bursting through.

Exactly, was never getting by the filly.. absolute joke (no bet btw)

No consistency in the rules either..

So where is the consistency? Usually that's just a ban for the rider.

    Wrong decision

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭CH3OH

No bet-- It was the talking in the stewards room that won that
to me it was six of one and half a dozen of the other

There is no consistency in horse racing Johner, no doubt.

But when you have a stewards enquiry in the world's oldest classic, stewards should most definitely apply the rules. Its £400k to the winner.

How many times have you seen your horse hemmed in and the race lost as a result ?

The English on Ch4 aren't happy as one of "their own" lost the race.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 669 ✭✭✭idnkph

Think that's wrong. COD was not riding in a straight line. His horse was lying into the other very subtly. He knew he wouldn't get passed him buy tried to close him in. Worked for him tho.

Fair play to Atzeni for coming out and winning the next

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭Mostly Harmless

Simple Verse will get the race back on appeal.

The rules are wrong but there's no way she should have lost the race based on the rules.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,702 ✭✭✭tryfix

Had no bet in the race, the stewards finally took a proper decision. A head in it with all that interference and bumping by the winner particularly in the final furlong.

The English stewards enquiry rules have been ridiculous for a long time. Basically the stewards have been encouraging jockeys to cheat by interfering to win with no consequences for the winning horse.

It's high time that something was done about it.

Fair play to Paul Hanagan for having a word with him after the result of the stewards' enquiry as well.

I'd prefer the English rules to the silly rules in France and America where minimal interference often sees the best horses being thrown out.

The rules are wrong but there's no way she should have lost the race based on the rules.

I doubt it. Rule 153 has been revised so many times at this stage. The questions are

    (i) Was the nature of the incident such as to place in serious jeopardy the safety of any horse or rider?
(ii) Was the progress of any horse substantially impeded?
(iii) Was it necessary for any rider to take significant evasive action?
    (iv) Was the interference sustained?
    (v) Did the rider create a gap when one did not previously exist?

If the answer to all of these questions is NO, then the interference is unlikely to have jeopardised the safety of any other horse or any rider and may be considered to be of a minor nature, thereby giving the stewards the power to leave the places unaltered. If the answer to any of the questions is YES, the horse responsible for causing interference will be placed behind those horses which suffered interference.

Windsor park was only out for the run. Good call by the poster who said about smullens horse. I wouldn't ever read too much into that though as windsor park a nh horse I'd always expect smullen to pick the flat bread horse.
    Oh well.
