Modern sleeper cars

Said I'd start a thread about modern sleeper cars which are deceptively quick yet look pretty average rather than in your face styling.

First one up for me is this, 313bhp and looks like any other mid size middle management type car found in a company car park:

    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/Audi/A6/3.0TDI-313HP/201914387708049400/

Don't have a link but remember seeing an ex consulate BMW E60 550i SE for sale some time back, standard SE trim in boring silver too. Total sleeper.

    Anyone think of others?

    Gs 450h.
Pre 2011 model looks abit fat and not very sporty but with 3.5L petrol engine plus electric input, it's an animal in a straight line.
    5.5s to 60 mph.
As fast an anything this side of an m5 in a straight line.

VW Golf R - in a sober colour. 300 bhp, 4WD and you'll have lads asking you what it's like on diesel.

I dunno about the likes of an A6 or 760 being sleepers as those big cars pretty much always have big engines or maybe that just me! They aren't that unassuming to me either...

The later (2008+ AFAIK) Mercedes E500 and CLK500 had the 382bhp lump and outwardly looked the same as any 200 Kompressor - the monster brakes behind the front wheels being the only giveaway.

But those Audi 3.0 BiTDIs in the OP really are very quick as diesels go, 313ps & 650Nm. Even the more reputable tuners can remap them to near 400bhp and 800Nm. And they sound savage.

4 cylinders don't sound great. Heard a twin turbo massarati the other week. Lovely burble off it. There is also a V8 scania up the road that sounds savage!

There's a sound actuator in the exhaust system, sounds like any V6 diesel up front but from behind it's like a loud petrol V8.

It's trickery but it works. Maserati V6D is the same.

    How about this one?
Pretty good sleeper and even better if you debadged it.

I might have a bold one, but what about the punto gt?
Remove the gt badge and you've a standard looking 1.2 60bhp punto except its 1.2 tonnes of turbo power madness :)

    Or.. The lancia 8.32.
Effectively a thema with a Ferrari engine.
    Would love one.

While I'd also love one, modern? That Zafira is the sleeperest so far.

    A Nissan Stagea.

I'd say most electric cars going forward can be classed as sleepers until people get used to them. A Tesla or an i3 will leave most things for dust at the lights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭Steve320

It hasn't been released on our shores but the Ford Flex Ecoboost is the weirdest sleeper car out in my opinion , it sounds and looks slow but has a bad ass v6 in it with over 350hp , don't like fords but I appreciate this

    A Nissan Stagea.
The guy I bought the ISF off has a Stagea as a shopping car. I didn't know that the things existed until he picked me up at the station when I went to collect my car. Bloody fantastic for a discrete looking station wagon that you would expect a spinster of the parish to drive.:)
He sold the ISF as he has a GTR on order. Reckoned that as he is 70 now he botter buy one before he gets too old.

Apparently ALL ISF owners regret upgrading from the IS250 as it's not as big a jump as they'd expected.

    True story.

Stagea is just a wagon version of the GTR, awesome car and looks quite different as well.

I think you might be missing the point. It's about being a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Everyone would expect an E63 to have a decent lump under the bonnet and be a quick enough car because it's a coupe that moves as good as it looks. But not many would expect a humble looking medium size premium saloon to be packing a 476bhp V8 under the bonnet.

Once drove a BMW (E60) 550i. It was silver with beige interior, 17-inch wheels and was de-badged. Very cool car.

I drive a Tesla Model S P85D. Nothing spectacular to look at over here. But I'm leaving for dirt if I want to. I'm beyond the lead foot though. But great when you got kiddies in daddy's Mercedes that think they'll smoke you.

Volvo V70 R, Swede speed and engineering. A family estate car outclassing, outpacing and sending VW, BMW and Audi 2litre diesel fanboys back to the fancy forecourts scratching their heads.

(except there's about four in Ireland)

When my S60 was causing me major hassle was looking at bringing one from UK as all the S60r's were auto and they are basically built on same platform. 300bhp, 370bhp easy with a grand or so of exhaust mods and a remap.

Insane with 4wd and it's looks

As mad as hey may look, people just don't expect a Volvo (particularly an estate) to peg along like a mad car. The odd time I throw coins in a toll and put the boot down and then settle down to a normal motorway speed I get the 2ltr diesel cars overtake me AS A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE  because they were left for dust! :) And mines a normal 2.5ltr petrol turbo Swede. (Ford Focus ST engine)

And the Insignia OPC, just looked it up to see if they were still using the 2.8 turbo v6 from other GM products, according to Parkers they can reach 170 mph.
