    World Archery, the International Archery Federation, officially introduced 3D archery as one of its disciplines at the beginning of 2000 with the intention of attracting a very high number of archers, who in various countries in the world hunted with a bow, to sporting and athletic archery.
    A goal that attained excellent results, considering the ever increasing number of practitioners, who in many cases preferred to put themselves to the test in sports rather than continue hunting.
    The 3D event will take place along courses buried in the greenery, using three dimensional targets (hence the name) and envisages the participation of archers belonging to 4 divisions:

    - Barebow
    - Instinctive Bow
    - Compound
    - Longbow

    The targets, divided into classes on the basis of their size, are laid out on slopes and at various distances from the shooting pegs along the course. The shooting pegs represent the area from which the athletes shoot their arrows and have two colours: red for the compound division, which shoot farther distances and blue for all the other divisions. Targets that are suitably proportioned in relation to the distance and size of the targets are chosen.
    Athletes, which are subdivided into teams, shall take turns in shooting at each individual target one at a time. Each competitor, positioned up to a maximum of one metre from the shooting peg, may shoot from a standing or kneeling position. Archers may shoot in groups of not more than six persons and never less than three.

    SCORING

    Each target has 3 grooves on its surface that outline circles, whose area determines the scores. If an arrow touches a line of the groove, the highest score will be awarded:

    11 POINTS – the smallest circle. It represents the “vital” zone and is marked with an X on the scorecard. It is called the “Super Spot” in jargon;
    10 POINTS – the area of the circle outside the 11 points circle;
    8 POINTS – the vital zone of the target outside the 10 points circle;
    5 POINTS – all over the body of the target outside the 11, 10 and 8 points circles is worth 5 points;
    0 POINTS – if the arrow does not hit the target or hits the hooves or horns, an M (miss) is marked on the scorecard and is worth 0 points.

    QUALIFICATION ROUND

    The competition gets under way dividing all participants in the competition into teams which follow two courses of 24 targets each, in which 2 arrows are shot from each shooting peg for a total of 92 arrows. At the end of the two courses, the ranking of the best 16 scores in each division, male and female, is drawn up.
    The time limit for each athlete to shoot his/her own arrow is 1 (one) minute.
    The time limit of 1 minute for the first athlete of the group begins when the group (team) in front has cleared the target and is verified/assumed to be at a safe distance from same.

    The time limit of 1 minute for the subsequent athlete of the group begins when the athlete who shot first, after having shot his/her arrow, leaves the shooting peg to return to the waiting area.

    3D SPECIALITY

    World Archery, the International Archery Federation, officially introduced 3D archery as one of its disciplines at the beginning of 2000 with the intention of attracting a very high number of archers, who in various countries in the world hunted with a bow, to sporting and athletic archery.

Each competitor, positioned up to a maximum of one metre from the shooting peg, may shoot from a standing or kneeling position. Archers may shoot in groups of not more than six persons and never less than three elements.

    SCORING
    Each target has 3 grooves on its surface that outline circles, whose area determines the scores. If an arrow touches a line of the groove, the highest score will be awarded:

    11 POINTS – the smallest circle. It represents the “vital” zone and is marked with an X on the scorecard. It is called the “Super Spot” in jargon;
    10 POINTS – the area of the circle outside the 11 points circle;
    8 POINTS – the vital zone of the target outside the 10 points circle;
    5 POINTS – all over the body of the target outside the 11, 10 and 8 points circles is worth 5 points;

    ELIMINATION ROUNDS

    After the Qualification round, there are 2 Elimination rounds on two courses: the first has 12 shooting pegs and the second 8.

    The 16 best scores of the qualification round in each division go to the first Elimination round. At this stage, the 16 archers, divided into teams of 4 athletes, each shoot 1 arrow at the 12 targets on the course.

    After the first round, the 8 best scores are admitted to the second Elimination round, where each of the athletes shoot 1 arrow at the 8 targets making up the course.

    At the end of the second Elimination round, the best 4 scores pass on to the semi-finals.

    SEMI-FINALS AND FINALS

    This round involves head-on encounters where athletes shoot 1 arrow per target on a course with 4 shooting pegs, where 1 target for each athlete is laid out (therefore 2 targets for each shooting peg). The 4 athletes in each division challenge each other in the semi-final based on the scores obtained in the second Elimination round: the 1st against the 4th and the 2nd against the 3rd. The winners of the semi-finals shoot for 1st and 2nd place whilst the other two shoot for 3rd and 4th place.

    Both the finals for the gold medal as well as for the bronze medal will take place on a course with 4 shooting pegs (having 8 targets, 2 for each shooting peg) and each athlete shoots 1 arrow. Whoever obtains the highest score at the end of the course wins the challenge. In the event of a tie at the end of the 4 shooting pegs, the athletes shoot one arrow each at a target reserved for the shoot off. The archer who obtains the highest score wins. In the event of a tie, the arrow closest to the centre of the circle worth 11 points (Super Spot) wins.

    TEAM COMPETITION

    The team elimination round (quarter finals) involves head-on encounters on courses with 8 targets for the best 8 teams that qualified on the basis of the results obtained by the athletes at the end of the 2 qualification rounds.

    Teams are made up of one Compound athlete, one Longbow athlete and one athlete using either a Barebow or an Instinctive Bow (the captain of the team decides which of the two components may be part of the team), up to a maximum of 3 archers.

    The team shoots one arrow per athlete at each target in the elimination and final rounds. The time limit for a team to shoot 3 arrows at each target is 2 minutes. The time limit of 2 minutes begins when the first component of the team reaches the shooting peg and the group in front has cleared the target and is verified/assumed to be at a safe distance from same.

    The best 8 teams qualify for the elimination round (on the basis of the score obtained at the end of the 2 courses of the individual qualifications) and challenge each other on a course with 8 shooting pegs according to the following table: the 1st in the qualification round against the 8th, the 2nd against the 7th, the 3rd against the 6th and the 4th against the 5th. After that, the best 4 teams are admitted to the semi-finals and finals.

    What do archers do at night? Sleep?

    Well no, they need to eat and relax so to accommodate a temporary huge influx a special Archery Village is set up.

    At long last, an Irish team to follow through the week. Best of luck to these entrepreneurs. They know they're up against tough odds but they're there to fly the flag, compete and learn. Good shooting Adrian (Instinctive) Sarah (Longbow) and Terry (Barebow).
