I'll admit it occasionally brings a tear to the eye. Especially around Italia 90. No idea why.

imagine a drink session watching episodes 1985 to 2009. many memories such as Euro 88, World cup 1990,1994, rugby world cup 1991,grand slam 2009, triple crowns etc.

It's great you love it so because RTE will repeat it forever and ever and ever.

I actually like it too though. Best thing about it's all clips, no presenters/talking head types

I like how the soundtrack from the year is usually made up from songs from that very year, freaky.

The booing when Haughey shows up and talks abouts belts.

Am I imagining it or do they always pay Bright Eyes when something sad happens though?

Maybe I just seen the same episode a few times or something.

Great series. There's always a point in each episode when the pop music stops ominously and then you know it's about to show the aftermath of an IRA shooting or another catastrophic loss of human life.

Done it. I was in the Czech Republic with a friend and he had been given a USB stick with pretty much all those years. Add in a few pints of draught guinness and a half a bottle of whiskey each and we were both in bits. Never cried as much in my life.

World Cup 2002 was a special time. As a young fella, it was unreal. I was in the departure lounge for the Ireland Germany game - you can't have a beer. A half pint. Feck it, have whatever you want and Robbie equalised in stoppage time. W were dancing towards the departure. Aer Lingus staff were well oiled too.

    Mattie Holland screamed one in.

Duff announced himself on the world stage. Chelsea signed him up for big money soon after.

We lashed the Spanish out of it. Harte missed the first peno and Robbie took the next. I was in Spain and watched it on Bbc - The Irish refuse to go home!

We went to the Amsterdam arena and went two up.

Our international teams were doing well.

It's a great programme, well edited and presented, the sport the politics it brings it all back and can give you nostalgia emotions, for me anyway.

The best thing about Reeling in the Years is the soundtrack.
It comes from a time when music was good.

They should go back and edit each episode to extend them to an hour. Surely there would be enough material to fill it. Love the show but have seen each episode a bit much in recent years

or just go back and do each year again with other news

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 785 ✭✭✭Stinjy

Used to always watch this after dinner on a Sunday. . Loved the old news, but yeah - music stopping means something bad is happening....

Would love to see ones from the last few years though!

No, you've definitely got it wrong. The music from each episode is always from the relevant year.

In the 2015 one once they get to the marriage referendum I'll probably tear up. I can look at the others knowing their history but in an almost detached way. The referendum was something I was really involved in.

Definitely one of RTE's better programmes. Learned more from that show than I did from history in school tbh!

You do know that it's a complete rip off of a BBC program called The Rock 'n Roll Years?

That started in 1955, the birth of Rock 'n Roll, and went up to 1980. For some reason they never, so far as I know, extended it beyond that. I think I still have a few episodes on VHS.

(Ask your dad if you don't know what VHS is. Actually. Born in 1989? Ask your grand dad)

    ...

The BBC will never be able to match the Reeling episode which finished with Bertie as minister for finance stating that he took great delight in seeing tax cheats being prosecuted by our courts.

I think Reeling in the Years is one of RTE's best, even if that is a very short list.

Rock and Roll Years went to 1989. 1956 is the first one.

I'll never forget that screamer against Cameroon, up at 7 in the morning with tonsilitis and roared when it went in. Killed me.

The best bit was a scence in the 80's where Charlie and Bertie are interviewed about what they would do if they won the lotto.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,436 ✭✭✭c_man

It's pretty good but let's just forget about the 2000s Reeling... Pure guff. They knew it was big then and let it slide. Not to mention attempting to position RTE presenters as having known the crash was coming all along and we the general eejits were just too stupid to listen to our betters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,383 ✭✭✭✭Birneybau

I love the way they'd use a clip, with a little knowing wink as to what will happen in the future.

not hard considering that the syllabus only goes as far as 1966. Reeling in the years is just the catch up :D

It is a pile of dung but seeing the oak men lift Samuel in 1993 makes the hairs on my neck stand up, Enda Gormley throwing that ball up at the end is sacred footage.

They always include Ulster as a foreign country in it yet include a segment if an Ulster team wins the all ireland I have noticed. Surely that should just be more foreign news.

Reeling in the Years and Scannal are two of the best shows RTE have ever done. Worth the license fee alone.
