If you have a look back through the forum you'll find a thread about this already :)

I can't think what it's called off the top of my head but there's a good deal of answers in it that should help you

Can we suggest that posts like this should be in the travel forum ?

Could we suggest the maybe you either report this post or use the feedback thread that is running at this moment in time to make this suggestion rather than belittle posters who come in asking genuine questions and are then made feel bad/stupid for posting?

I don't see why, I wanted to know what Ethiopian Airlines is like. The logical place to ask it the Aviation & Aircraft forum, no?

Thoughts on flight out - flying economy: perfectly ok. Food not great, but it's airline food Y class. I managed to get comfortable and had my centre pod aisle seat plus the neighbouring middle seat to myself. DId what i wanted to do which was sleep pretty nuch all the way leaving me fresh and ready to make the most of the early-ish landing in LA on the Sat AM. Cabin was a little tired but clean. No comment on inflight entertainment system as I didn;t use it. Charge point for phone handy.

Was dreading arrival and customs/immigration in LAX but it was a breeze. Only hold up was a wait for baggage, but no biggie.

Delighted with the overall value. If the schedule makes sense then nothing beats flying direct IMHO. Less scope for gremlins to get hold of you or your bags.

Happy out. A qualified recommendation given no clue on inflight entertainment and food 'average'. Schedule alone: worth it.

Thanks Redderneck. You going to follow up with a return trip critique for comparison ?

I'm probably going to be over there again within the next six months so would much rather a direct flight. Are lingus are rumoured to be putting the route on again in 2016 so I wonder how they'll compare with pricing given there'll already be a market server.

Incidentally, was the flight full considering Dublin is a stopover ?

    Yeah. Will do.

Re flight load - if I had to guess, I'd say probably somewhere 60-70% - but I was in row 13; got in & got settled and got the head down; never really looked back if you get me. There were spare seats in every row from what I did manage to take in though, near enough. Was chatting with an Irish American lady before boarding in DUB who flies Ireland-LA 4 or 5 times a year and has recently started using Ethiopian and she was saying a much lower load factor on the return leg. She's been able to find a row of three which she can stretch out on all to herself with no bother on her last two trips. She was a little less blasé about the food quality - but something tells me that's down to her time spent in LA!

    Food: average economy
IFE: No worse then average economy on airlines such as Aer Lingus.
Staff: very friendly in my experience.
Aircraft: The 787 is a damn nice plane.
Comfort: my flights have been lightly loaded. Last time from LAX, pretty much everyone who wanted had 3 seats across.

Should have mentioned staff earlier - excellent. Friendly & efficient.

I heard the flight was fine, but the food nothing special. I will be on the LAX - DUB leg in some weeks and I propose to eat in LAX, then just go to sleep on the plane.

I'm taking this route next week but it will be the first time I'm flying with Ethiopian Airlines.

Therefore, I would like to know if :

    - The airline itself is picky regarding handbag luggage
    - The 2*23 Kg is really applied
    - The overnight long-haul flight is not a nightmare and how do they serve food during this flight

Everything will vary on the date and people involved, but they do tag hand baggage in my experience and I'd imagine if they flight is busy they'd be strict.

Most airlines stick to their weight limits pretty rigidly these days, but 2 pretty large bags per person is unusually generous compared to most airlines economy allowances today.

They serve food on trays, distributed from carts at either end of the flight ;)

Likely too late for Maxmelay, but thought I'd point out for anyone else: they are strict on the individual weight of each bag. They made me take out a smaller bag I had wanted to avoid hand-carrying and had stashed inside the bigger case, as it tipped in at just over 25Kg.

In fairness, I half expected it and it's no big deal when you have the 2nd bag handy. 2 x 23kg is almost absurdly generous in any case.

On the food - if you plan to conk out, just have a word with cabin crew ealy on and ask them NOT to disturb you. I did and they left me conked.

Interesting with Aer Lingus now entering the market at €369 each way, will there be any serious competition between Ethiopian & EI

A friend of mine travelled recently. Here is what he said:
Food going to LA was terrible. He bought loads of food in the airport for the return flight but the food was good flying back.
Rest of the flight was like with any other airline, pretty standard stuff. Plane is 787. The only other thing he mentioned was the odour of the africans, maybe someone else could comment on this? I would certainly fly if the price is around 50-100 eur cheaper than anything else.

Your friend, frankly, <mod snip> Is Someone I would disagree with...

And I'm not talking about his high expectations of airline food.
