Smart TV is meh to be honest

Planned obsolescence ensures that many LCD screens won't last that long anyway as the power components which can get quite hot are placed next to heat sensitive components.

I paid €1200 for a 32" wide screen ,the big back type, during the boom.
Thought I might get a lifetimes viewing out of it.

Had a job to give it away for free last year.

Cant see myself ever paying anything like that again for a tv.

32 seemed huge then too. Now with the narrow borders big Tvs look small, I bought a 40 inch recently and I thought it would be huge in the room but it just isn't. And yes smart features are a bit bleh

    Glazers Out!

Back in 2006 I was downloading TV shows off the net and putting them on video cds then discovered avi/MP4 files and DVD rewritables then years later I ditched the DVDs and bought a blu ray player with a USB connection and started putting files on usbs (much faster and efficient).

Gone are the days of DVD recorders and videos.

Tvs used to be curved, then they went flat and then they went curved again. Weird. I'd say it's all a cod.

It is all a cod or to be more specific, it's just marketing. To create a need that doesn't really exist and then fool the masses into thinking they really need it. Seeing past the bullshít makes life so much more uncomplicated.

its not massive, but our smart TV changed the way we watch t.v
We've told Sky to feck off, but now they're giving it to us contract free for 9/month.
its nearly paid for itself already.
everything is netflix, or streamed from niter or other such sites.
have yet to use the 3d featre though, thats a load of meh.

Have my Sony Trinitron since 2003...

Won't get another one until it breaks and I won't pay a premium for a Smart TV either.

How many internet connected devices do we need?

What next.... HDMI port to the back of the head ?

I think we paid about €350 for a 40 inch flat screen. It does the job!

2 years ago I decided to get rid of sky because only kids watched it and wife watches soaps . Sure you can still get that on the free view on sky cause loads of channels still work, ie children's channels and itv for soaps.

Anyway back on topic any TV can be a smart TV these days . It's all the same . Apple TV makes every TV smart and you can get hard drives that you can stream film off .

DVD's are superior to blu ray in my humble opinion.

They were convex out of necessity, these are concave for viewing experience reasons. There's clear benefits to a concave screen in some environments (e.g. a cinema) where it significantly bolsters your field of vision and can make the experience tons more immersive.
There's also quite a lot of drawbacks but it does at least feel like there's more reason to it than owning a 4K television in the near future (or ever if it isn't absolutely gigantic).

Ah yes, Smart TV. The latest cashectomy procedure for the hard-of-understanding. I have a cheap Samsung 1080p LED jobbie to which I add my own smarts - streaming stick, BluRay player, etc. - as be playsin' me.

Father in law upgraded his 3 year Samsung & gave it to us.

    It lasted a year & couldn't be repaired. I was shocked!

Apparently this quite normal for flatscreens.

We dug out the ol' Panasonic Quintrix CRT jobbie & it's enjoying a new lease of life now.

    Can't beat old tech.

Was in Harvey Norman a while ago and they had something like a 70" TV for about €12k. I honestly stood in front of it with my mouth open for a few minutes before remembering that I don't have €12k, but if the money had been in my pocket, I'd probably have left the shop with it strapped up to my back like the world's most robbery-tempting turtle. It was a thing of awe and beauty.

4K is a non-event at most regular sizes of TV, though, and while 3d is a nice gimmick, IMO it's rarely used unless you're watching Blu-Rays and parked directly in front of the screen (which, for most of the time, I'm not). I like the idea of Smart TV, but considering the limited selection for streaming services in this country, it's not really much of a benefit. Most of the time, I just watch whatever's on UPC, BRs, and stream stuff from my computer.

Technological items will forever be reformulated with new bits and pieces tacked on to carry the manufacturers through periods where there isn't any impressive innovation. There will always be big and real changes, but they can't come frequently enough to carry the industry. In terms of size/format, we went from stamp-sized B&W boxes, to small color TVs, to big CRT monsters, to plasma, to LCD, to LED, to OLED. Definition went from "I think that's The Beatles, but I can't be sure until someone says it" to "Good Christ, I can see every single facial hair those Direction kids have". We went from two or three channels on air for a few hours a day to (potentially) billions of hours of video available any time at the click of a button.

It'll be a while before the next really big innovation rolls around (wallpaper TVs, maybe?), but until then, they have to flog the minor improvements to stay afloat and also so there are things available for people to buy when their previous TV breaks down that is at least incrementally superior.

Two friends of mine bought 40something" Sony Bravia LCD's back in 08/09 for more than double the price of my current car. Both still working fine and in daily use. One gives out because some furniture shop was giving away the same TV free with 3pc recliner suites which cost the same as the TV a few years later. The other is delighted that the heat off the thing heats the box room in his house. They did well there IMO.

How good can a picture be? Until it's virtually indistinguishably from real life is the answer and until that point is reached - yes 'these technology companies' will endeavor to keep improving - with gimmicks along the way passing off as 'necessities'. How could that possibly be a bad think re the picture quality ?

I don't think you fully understand the concept of 'smart tv'. It gives you the ability to watch what you want when you want to watch it. How could that possibly be a bad thing either ? Would you rather live your life round a TV schedule with irritating adds thrown in. Yes, you can get a better smart tv though by connecting a computer to it with xmbc installed ;)

I'm just waiting for them to come back around to proper 3d so I can finally get use out of my original 3d glasses.

I think they gave up on red/blue too soon.

I would rather live around a schedule.Fcuked if I'm paying for a kick ass TV or a subscription to watch more crap.
If it's not on Freesat it ain't being watched,if there is something (there's not) I don't want to miss I can record it.

I've never seen Breaking Bad,Game of Thrones or any of the other series people rave about,do I miss them?...do I fuk.
Who has time to watch all that shoite anyway?

1800 euro for a 50 inch smart panasonic plasma 4 years ago. I rarely (close to never) use any of the smart features but I bought it for the picture quality which is superb, the (not so) smart features were just part of the package. IMHO 'smart' '3D' 'Curved' are all unnecessary. A good screen is key. Once you have that, add a mini pc, laptop, streaming device and you are laughing.

I also have a 29 inch Trinitron from way back which I simply cannot replace. The picture is still fabulous and knocks the sh1t out of all similarly sized LCD TVs until very recently.

I bought a Samsung 720p TV before HD had been finalised a long time back. 95% of broadcast content is still 720p/1080i. I am usually one of the early adopters when it comes to tech but I still haven't seen the need to upgrade the TV yet, satellite, Netflix & Amazon Prime look great on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭Icaras

I love my smart tv. Plug a mouse and keyboard in and watch TV over the net rather than have to put up with the voice, bgt etc. That the missus would watch.
To also answer the OPs question no they will never stop changing and getting "better" the TV companies want you to spend your money on their super tv rather than a competitors.

The rule for me is never spend over €600 for a TV and picture quality is the most important thing.

3D screens are awesome for the simple fact that they've made normal LCDs fall in price. I've not the slightest interest in 3D. I have noticed the trend in cutting the number of hdmi ports on newer telly's, seems strange as in this day and age people will have more hdmi devices.

Anyway, all a bit moot for me at the moment as my trusty 8 year old Samsung is still going strong - granted it did cost ~€800 back in the day which would be a very expensive 32" these days

Yup my one mentioned above could be the very very same model family. It does have a 1080i setting but I've always had it on 720p; it was bought for my shiny new xbox.

We only got sky the other month and her ladyship couldn't fathom why I was setting the box to 720p when 1080i was available, I didn't have the heart to tell her that it's because going to be displaying 90% fast moving sport so I changed the subject....

I don't really care about the change to curved, 3D, Smart or 4k (although I don't really know about this one).

When flat/HD tv's became all the rage I wanted one, and I got one with my PS3 in 2007 both of which are still going strong. Playsonic FTW!

Couldn't be bothered with the more recent upgrades.

Hah, it's the same one. Also got it around the time the 360 came out. Still more than holds it own today in terms of picture quality.
