How often do you shower, and do you have an evening or morning shower?

After reading through the "How clean is your house thread" I thought I'd ask the good people of AH about showering.

I wish I could shower everyday but I work long enough hours and generally I'm too knackered, so it ends up being every other day. And I usually shower at night because I don't give myself enough time in the morning.

It's called a knacker shower if you use Lynx.

I shower nearly every day. Too hungover today to bother with one.

You wash you hair every day?
    Are you up at 5am?

Minimum twice a day (odd time more)

I refuse to believe that there are people who shower less than once a day....or that it is anyway near as prevalent as people on boards suggest

Even before we had an electric shower at home and relied on immersion I'd have to have twice a day

Funny enough me, and most people I know, call it a ballymun shower...that is harsh I know but it's just something we all said growing up.

    A whore's bath

Every second day, and more often if needed. Masses of hair that takes hours to dry, can't be having that every day. It's not very good for your skin or hair to shower every day either.

I use deodorant and am often complimented on how nice I smell

Unless you're working in a nuclear test facility I can't see any reason for two showers a day.

That's madness to me. I shower every day in summer and when pregnant, otherwise every second day.

Twice a day just seems ridiculous if you're not exercising or doing something that causes you to sweat a lot.

I shower in the morning mostly or at night if I have fresh bedsheets!

Edit- I should add, sometimes I get very depressed and would go well over a week without showering or leaving the house. So I know if I haven't showered in 2 days and I'm not really feeling like it or I'm putting it off, I'm probably slipping into a bit of a funk.

I used to shower every second day but I didn't feel fresh enough so now I shower every day unless I'm having a lazy day at home. I wash my hair every second day though. I think it really depends on how much you sweat and how much physical activity you do.

Shower every morning - wakes me up! But don't wash my hair everyday - and love a bath more than a shower but that's more of a luxuriating thing than a clean thing.

I would shower twice a day too if the weather is warmer and/or I'm tired after a long day - it's invigorating.

I shower every day that I leave the house. I don't bother if I'm sitting in. I only wash my hair twice a week though. I have in the past tried to shower less often as it's so aggravating for my eczema but I just don't feel right. When it's very bad I have made do with a wash with a facecloth on alternate days though. It's so bad for sensitive skin to wash ever day. :(

I usually shower in the morning but wash my hair over the bath in the evening as it takes hours to wash and dry.

Why don't people shower with baking soda? Used as deodorant it neutralises the body's natural odours!

Especially useful if you are a stinky person, wish more people knew about it. If you don't want to shower every day throw some baking powder under your arm pits or stay the fcuk away from me!

I shower every other day, sometimes at weekends it might stretch into day 3 but only if I'm not going anywhere. Sometimes morning, sometimes evening, sometimes middle of the day.

My hair is at its best on day 2.

Indeedio. My hair would suffer if I showered daily, and my skin would dry out.

Definitely a good indicator of depression alright. I was the same.

Every second day, unless I've done something particularly strenuous in which case I'll just shower afterwords.

As regards morning vs evening: busy days evening, days off morning (or whenever I get up). Not a morning person. Getting up and feeding myself is enough work without having to shower too.

Some very unclean (depressed?) people around here!

I wouldn't leave the house without being showered and I'd shower again after most strenuous activities. Heavy garden work, a run, a hike, a cycle, you'll get my drift.

I've used a bucket of warm water a few times when the shower was out of order.
If it wasn't so inconvenient I'd do it every day. Extremely refreshing pouring warm water over yourself.

I couldn't imagine going to work without having had a shower. I'd feel manky and uncomfortable for the day.

On lazy weekends I can go 2 days without one but that's about my limit.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,188 ✭✭✭DoYouEvenLift

You should all be showering at least twice a day really. These showers don't need to be long, scrubbing yourself top to bottom ones.

Going to bed clean after a quick shower and also sleeping in clean, regularly changed bed clothes feels so much better than just stripping off and going to bed.

Wake up and have another shower, but a proper one where you wash your hair as well, before the day.

This is especially important for anyone that does anything strenuous during the day like sports, jogging, lifting etc.

There was a thread on this not too long ago and the general consensus was that most people on Boards don't believe in good personal hygiene.

I shower every morning and every night. Why anyone thinks it's normal to go days without cleaning themselves is beyond me.

At least once a day, it just starts the day off right for me.

Actually come to think of it I've been running weekdays for at least an hour for a few weeks now so I'd shower after that too so I guess twice a day.

The very thought of not shower for days repulses me.

I shower once every other day in the evenings. It's best for the health of my hair and skin to not over wash.

I can tell you with 100% confidence, it's not normal to shower twice a day. In fact it's bad for your hair and skin and a huge waste of water and power.

When I was a kid, in the 80s, most people didn't even have showers. It was a couple of baths a week at most. Now that wasn't ideal either, but this notion that not showering every is unhygienic is a very new idea.

I shower after the gym or a cycle. I shower some evenings if I've done neither. I regularly pole my colleagues and family as to my smellyness, I'm happy to report I rarely smell.

    I don't own deodorant, it's a nonsense.

Well it is prevalent definitely, showering daily is a very middle class western custom.

I shower daily because I exercise a lot and even on days when I don't my hair gets greasy so I need to shower anyway. Also I feel refreshed after a shower so sometimes I have two per day if Im feeling tired and need a pick me up.

Not showering every day = depressed? You probably happen upon non-daily showerers much more often than you think. I have to say, I very rarely encounter smelly people, and I'd say a lot of people don't shower daily.

What do people here imagine populations in drought-stricken areas do, where daily showering might even be prohibited or discouraged?

    At least once a day..

    Mornings during the week.

At the weekend it could be any hour of the day depending on how lazy I am.

I shower in the morning to wake myself up - it's refreshing and prepares me for the day. Also, I wouldn't show up to work looking like I just rolled out of bed. I have a quick shower at night (without washing my hair) because I go to the gym in the evenings and I don't like going to bed covered in sweat. Sometimes I mightn't bother if I haven't been to the gym but I feel a lot better when I do.

Yes, I can understand people using shower to feel refreshed and awake, my boyfriend is like that. Though I don't get how you'd look like you've rolled out of bed if you don't shower. Surely brushing your hair and wearing clean clothes would take care of that?

In Ireland indeed. Pretty much the same as most countries in continental Europe were in the 30s and 40s. Thankfully most first world countries have moved on since then and personal hygiene has much improved. For most of us, not all of us, it seems.

Strange, I don't recall people being any smellier in the 80s than the present day. People do appear to be much more precious now though!

Again, how would you cope in a drought-affected region?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 516 ✭✭✭Jogathon

Everyday and mostly twice as I like to keep fit and can't go to bed sweaty!

I have a dry hair type and its long so have stopped washing it as frequently as I used to. I haven't washed it since Thursday evening, and will wash it tomorrow night after a run. It's so much healthier, sleeker and with less breakages since I've started doing this that my hairdresser has commented on it. It doesn't smell as I use nice scented hair oils and luckily I don't sweat in my scalp. I have had about ten body showers in between though!

Christmas Easter and August for the bank holiday is enough for anyone.

And this sweat excuse is rubbish. He should be rubbing dry clay dust on yourself if sweaty and let the rain wash it away.

about once every 4 days. everybody says it's disgusting when i tell them, but they never notice! obviously wash armpits and use roll-on in the morning or i'd stink. apart from that, i don't see what else smells before 3 or 4 days. if longer than 4 days, i just feel grubbyy and hair gets a bit greasy.

I've already said I shower once every other day, but I also live in an area going through a severe drought, and this is what they say about showering:
    • Maximum 1 short shower a day - get in, get out, no dillydallying
    • No Baths
    • Trade in your shower head for a water-saving one

And the one I'm not sure some of the folks more concerned with hygiene might be comfortable with:
    • If it's yellow, let it's mellow - i.e. don't flush your toilet if you just took a piss. Let it sit until you've taken a few or christen the bowl with a poo.

It's not ideal, but when you're in a drought you have to make sacrifices. Anyone living here who insists on taking two showers a day is being quite selfish. It's unnecessary.
