Storing / hanging up bib shorts

Just wondering how does everyone else store or put away bib shorts. Are they just thrown in a pile in a press, do you put the straps on a hanger or do you fold them with the chamois not creased and place them in a drawer.

Like so. Just wrap the straps around a hanger, you can get 3/4 pairs on one hanger

All goes into a crate at the bottom of my wardrobe. Wouldn't be 100% about hanging up bibshorts in case the straps would get stretched.

Folded without creasing the pad and stored in a drawer. Tops on hangers. Also learnt recently folded socks take up much less space and bunched up socks. Erm, I've said too much.

Folded flat in a drawer is the ideal, but usually it's whatever is too heavy/light to be worn in current weather that's stored in there, and everything in use in wash/wear rotation.

Life is far too short for individually folding socks :)

So you wear them on your body where they are under SEVERE strain but you worry about them stretching under their own weight on a hanger!!!

Always on a hanger with matching jersey where applicable.

Must ask Mrs. outfox. I've often wondered myself.

I use the kids hangers and just clip the bib shorts by the pad to each end.

Rolled in a ball and in a storage box at the top of the wardrobe along with S/S jerseys and socks. LS jerseys and jackets are hung in the wardrobe.

Winter gear is in a different storage box in the other wardrobe.

Ah here, you fold them in pairs, only half the work...

For a couple of hours a week compared to 24/7 ? Why yes. Yes I do.

Do you hang jackets/coats up on coat hooks?

Lycra stretches very easily. I would not recommend hanging them by the bibs at all. It is as Darkglasses says the length of time they're stretched for - they won't snap back. Unless you can put them on the pants hangars and even then I wouldn't. Folded flat or rolled, I'd never hang bibs anytime! Even drink them! I lie them bib side up on the clothes horse. I also wash jersey's and bibs on a net, as stretching tim out in the wash is equally bad (unless you have a full wash and even then I net them. And tights and bra's. Anything stretchy!)

Different type of fabric, reacts to stresses of being hung completely differently. Not even remotely comparable unless you have jackets with really thin lycra on top and a heavier pad on the bottom...

Say a typical bib shorts weigh, 200g, then the force on bibs is circa 2N when supporting their own weight.

When stretched on a rider(as they should with correct fit) I'd expect a force many multiples of that say 20N, and that's before you start cycling and moving.

Is their any science/manufacturer guidance on not hanging them? While my knowledge on materials is limited to metals and the like I'd be surprised if lyrca is damaged as suggested.

Although it would mean Lusk Doyle is right, so maybe you are right..:)

FWIW mine are in a heap in a drawer

Elastane is not that fragile and the weight of the shorts and pad is not enough to cause any kind of long term damage. It's the elastic properties that make spandex so durable:

"Can be stretched repeatedly and still recover to very near its original length and shape. Generally, can be stretched more than 500% without breaking"

Unless your suspending a full bidon in the shorts and extending past this limit, the straps will return to their original shape.

I think you will more than likely wear out the pad through use before the straps by hanging.

Because it only makes up a small portion of the garment, care instructions are normally given for the remaining fabric. My shorts here are 80% polyester and 20% lycra. I believe a lot of instructions on caring for shorts are related to the polyester component (shrinkage) and not the lycra/elastic component.

But of course, there may be cases where straps have stretched. I'd be inclined to say they might be cheaper shorts or have the wrong elastane content.

I can't believe I've read all the posts in this thread :)
I also can't believe I'm about to post add my 2 cents worth but here goes anyway............

FWIW I could have shorts bundled in the hotpress, bundled into a tote under the bed, bundled in the wardrobe. I just leave them bundled anywhere really!
The problem with this is that it's sometimes hard to find a pair when I'm in a hurry. I'll just have to learn to leave them bundled in the tote under the bed along with the bundled jerseys.

You're both probably right, but I will not be hanging mine up ever :P And I have extensive experience of elastane, polymide and polyester stretching irrevocably, and not under extreme strain! I can't afford to replace my kit soI look after it extremely well. Also the trouser hanging hangar leaves a mark which I don't like. I have skirts and shorts that are permanently pulled from those kinds of hangars, although the stuffed wardrobe is just as much to blame for that.

    It's riveting stuff!

Are you paid per use of "bundled"?

Plastic box along with jerseys socks gloves and shoved in the bottom of wardrobe in that useless space. base layers separate.

Three in built drawers underneath wardrobe, one takes pairs of shoes, another takes two helmets and third is where tools,c02 , third helmet (wtf) and a few emergency gels reside.

Fec wifey is right , the bike owns that room.
