Think I’m going to rewatch season 3 before Sunday.

The actor who plays Finan, does a very good Irish accent. The actor is from Scotland.

Already on Episode 6, another great season so far. Obviously the show is popular enough that it got 4 seasons, but I can't understand how everyone was all over Vikings and this hardly gets a mention....I think it's much better than Vikings, and I do like that show as well.

I've only watched the first season of this iirc, and at the time was also watching Vikings and felt this was the poorer version. A few have said that this has since gotten better than Vikings, but I stopped watching that too after [that] death.

Brilliant season loved it. Gorgeous men too. What's not to like.

The first season wasn't a fully Netflix produced show though. It was a BBC/ BBC america joint production. It's been fully Netflix for the last two seasons and it's noticeable. The actors also know their characters more now and there were some brilliant new actors added including the girl who plays Uhtred daughter who I felt was excellent. Millie brady as lady Ethelflaed has come into her own more this season. The characters are based on real life people and a person called Uhtred of bebbenburg did exist just a century after this event did take place.

I've run out of anime to (re)watch, so I'm sure I'll get back to this soon. Will get up to date with Vikings first so I don't confuse myself.

The budgets got larger with every season but especially after the first, I wouldn't have said that S1 was better than Vikings, but how it's developed since - absolutely.

Same could be said of many first seasons that were feeling out the waters until they got established and had access to more funding to realise their original vision.

S2 onwards is where it's really on with The Last Kingdom really. Stuff happens in single episodes that would take an entire season with the likes of Vikings.

Just finished season 4 and thought it was fantastic. I would prefer The Last Kingdom to both Viking’s & GoT.

I’ve seen a few people mention that Uhtred’s appearance is inaccurate compared to the books, what difference are they?

Second all comments about the cast being gorgeous, Alexander Dreymon in particular is so handsome.

The actress who plays Aelswith is only 26.....I thought she was around 40 or older. That means she was almost a teenager in the first season

Guy who plays Uthred is 11 years old than her.

Guys is anyone watching season 4 on Netflix.

Picture quality is awful, I know Netflix are limiting bandwidth but my god the dark scenes are ****ing awful and it's like watching a ****ty stream

So ah, yeah, ye were right. Brilliant show. Season 3 is the strongest imo. Some amazing characters in it, and I think that's what makes it good, a very strong supporting cast.

Didn't notice any dark issues, watching via Netflix on PS4 Pro. I was getting excellent quality all the time. Could be because I'm FTTH? I do only watch when it's dark though.

How does it compare to the likes of vikings @ game of thrones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

It compares favourably to GoT imo as it's also based on books and actual historical events. I haven't watched vikings but I might start now that I've finished S4.

I didn't like the way they shoehorned Uhtred into the Mercia succession story, in real historical events Aethelflaed became ruler of Mercia off her own steam after her husband died and didn't need some lowly Lord (which is what Uhtred is compared to Aflred's family line) to finagle her into position.

They also took some liberties with the siege in that there is no historical record of a siege at Winchester but there was one further north at Chester I think.

Other than that I think S4 was strong enough and labelling Aethelstan as King of All England or something when he was introduced shows that they are planning to go until at least he unifies Northumbria with Mercia, East Anglia and Wessex.

    I haven't read the books.

I think it's better than Vikings from Season 2 onward and is very comparable to that show, but less so Game of Thrones.

It has the violence of GoT, but not the in-depth political maneuvering or incredibly detailed and rich exposition of the first 5 seasons.

That's neither a good or bad thing - it just is what it is and serves a purpose, Last Kingdom is extremely fast paced and every episode progresses the plot significantly.

watching season 4 and of course they have a plague story line

Yeah Eliza butterworth and if you watch the interviews the cast have given and on set stuff it just shows how good an actor she is because the real person seems such a lovely person and yet she's plays a character who would sour milk.

Having read up on the real life story of the people that was the one thing I was curious to see how they would addresses this is this season and it was a bit clumsy and inaccurate as I think the king of Mercia was in declining health long before he actually died but obviously it needed to be condensed.

Again, winschester to fans is established as the base of the kingdom so it wasn't surprising they based the siege there. It happens.

I know I'm going back a few seasons but when Alfred and his family fled to athelney they had the king and his family living in marshes there. The isle of athenley was/is a bit of high ground on which king Alfred built a monastery. My point is surely the production crew could have found a bit of high ground similiar to the real thing.

Ah, there are some really good looking women in it to be fair.

Skade and Gisela from a season or two ago stand out, Athelflead isn't too hard on the eyes at all, and even though Brida is a bit more 'plain jane' she has something about her that doesn't really translate as well into photos.

I also thought the warrior-nun was fairly handsome, turns out she is actually Irish.

It's amazing though how you can often find characters so attractive, but not their actual real-life counterpart. I don't mean specifically to The Last Kingdom, just in general.

I thought this was pretty crap..

If I never hear the phrase 'destiny is all' again I'll be happy.. although I can't imagine a situation in which it should arise..

Very disappointed in this season compared to previous 2. Expected better. The acting took a plunge for the worse. Chap who plays Edward was dreadful. Plot holes everywhere and it just dragged out in many episodes.

Having just finished Season 5 of Vikings, after binging through the first 4 again, I can say that for me, TLK is better overall. Time moves much quicker in Vikings, but the show is slower overall, whereas time isn't passing as quick in TLK but the show feels a lot quicker, less fluff maybe. As I expected with Vikings, it didn't really do well in S5 for the obvious reason, and was worse overall for it. The lads are doing a good job, and I like that each one displays a different aspect or belief of daddy, with some even using visual ticks and motions to show their connection (Bjorn especially).

It's hard to call, while they both are showing basically similar time frames and settings, they're very different shows. Vikings is darker, more lore-based, whereas TLK seems like a more modern version of it, if that makes sense. Hard to call, but after watching 9 seasons of Vikings and the English fighting, I think i'm done with it until Assassins Creed Valhalla comes out!

TL;DR - TLK is just that bit better than Vikings. And agree above, S3 of TLK is brilliant.

Man, I'd been intending to watch Vikings at some stage..if this is better than it might give it a miss..

It's not massively better, just overall I think it's better. Some think Vikings is better. It's close for me. I was glued to the first 4 seasons of Vikings when it was coming out, but never watched after that. Watched the first season of TLK and never went back. Binged all 9 seasons between the 2 shows and that's my thoughts for now. Could change again, and could be that I had seen the first 4 seasons of Vikings already so the binge wasn't as good as the binge for TLK.

Give it a go, it's good and it's crazy to see some characters played by different actors and with different personalities, etc. First 4 seasons of Vikings are definitely worth a watch at least, and if not to at least see the amazing story of Ragnar Lothbrok.

im watching season 6 of Vikings and that seems to be going down hill, flipping around different locations with a bunch of not to interesting main characters.
