Beauty bloggers on snapchat

So what was once just an app for me to send ugly pictures of myself to my friends has now been taken over by loads of beauty bloggers. Why do you think this is? Just another platform for them to get exposure from? I've been following a few but to be honest it's just videos of them with one product placement after another; more of the same, just a different format.

I follow a few aswel. I quite like the short little snippets of their lives and whatnot.

Sosueme shows you behind the scenes stuff aswel when shes filming for tv or photoshoots, she seems like a nice girl.

I quite liked watching them too until the real reason they're on there came out and it was just placement after placement for brands. It's the number 1 app for the ages 12-35 so it makes sense for them to try and reach out to that audience. The constant bombardment of product placement gets annoying after a while though and it's like they think we don't know any better.

I noticed recently too that a few of them are starting to give less of their opinion of products on snapchat and just direct you to their new video on Youtube or new blog post.
I suppose they are trying to generate views and website hits but kind of annoying for me, I like them short and to the point!

I follow Retro Flame, Lovely Girlie Bits and Vivianna Does Make-Up on Snapchat and I find them pretty entertaining. Retro Flame's snaps are mostly about her life in New York as well as outfit snaps and blog promo. Lovely Girlie Bits is more warts 'n' all, going about her daily life (but quite funny), and VDM doesn't snap that much, but she comes across as very down to earth and not at all self-promoting.

Sometimes it's nice to see the person behind the glam Instagram shots, but I'd find it a turn-off if the snaps were more about endless self-promotion.

    Ditto!

I follow Fleur de Force, HeyClaire, Amelia Liana & Essie Button. There is a certain amount of self promotion ("go check out my new video!") but I follow them on youtube so I'd watch most of the videos anyway. I like seeing their everyday lives, it's like watching instant vlogs.

Maybe I'm following the wrong people so! I was following Rosie Connolly, Chloe Boucher and Pippa. Every morning I had to fly through 350+ seconds of "look what I got sent today", and gazillions of products. May give lovely girly bits a follow I heard she's funny

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

I follow a few bloggers on snapchat. Pippa O'Connor, Faces by Grace, Love Lauren, Lipstick & Louboutins, Fluff & Fripperies, Retroflame, Rosie Connolly, Styleme curvy, the beautiful truth, the make up fairy, buy now blog later.
I have found over the last few weeks that it has become a bit much. Some bloggers have been posting tons of snaps about stuff that isn't even interesting so I do think I will be unfollowing a few of them. If you watch a video going around of facebook taking the mick on these snaps, it does sum it up!
My fav's though are Pippa, Buy now blog later, the make up fairy and the beautiful truth.

Watched a 200second long snapchat last night of a blogger complaining about people being negative towards her. It had been about 2 weeks since her last rant which I think is the longest she's ever gone without ranting. I honestly believe she puts up these rants to get people to tell her she looks good. It's quite sad. She seems very insecure. I've stopped following her on snapchat now.

I love dramaticmac lately. She's been giving a nice insight into her life and always does Q&A's.

Tbh they should be able to deal with negativity. It's like if they aren't being admired and praised 24/7 they can't cope. The comments they get aren't even that bad, no name calling or anything like that, mainly just disagreeing with something or other. It's just attention seeking at this point.

The blogger I saw put up a picture of herself in her underwear. She's lost weight, looks great and obviously wants to show off her progress. What people seem to have an issue with is her posting in underwear which IMO are NSFW. She knows this and keeps posting pictures. Obviously it's her blog and she can post whatever pictures she likes but it's not like she doesn't know that this backlash is coming whenever she posts a picture like that and then gets all 'ranty' when someone comments on it. It's very tiring.

I just think there is no need to take to snapchat to have a rant when you are in a mood. Maybe some people think that it's ok cos they are being real and all that, but I think bloggers should treat themselves as business people and should maintain a professional image when using social media. Keep the snaps to pics of beauty products, swatches, MOTD, OOTD etc.

100% agree. I unfollowed when she 'outted' the person who gave her a negative comment. Uncalled for.

Bloggers in general don't seem to be able to handle feedback-they always call it criticism and jealousy. One minute they're boasting about how amazing it is that they can blog and have a platform for whatever they're shilling, and the next they are just normal people, trying to have a voice online but all the negativity is NOT FAIR.

I often wonder how they deal with professional feedback in other areas of their work life.

I have just totally fallen out of love with beauty bloggers recently. I feel like the ones I watch are just so repetitive and people put in no effort! And a lot of them are people who blog and youtube for a living but they just don't really seem to care. And the one Irish blog I really liked just seems to have given up! I swear I'm a total jinx on blogs. As soon as I start following them, they just seem to lose interest!

Professional feedback is one thing, but being told to get a life or getting personal attacks about your appearance is out of line.

Most of us have some sort of social media presence, and I'm sure any of us would be appalled if a randomer commented nastily on any of our pictures. I know bloggers are branding and marketing themselves through facebook etc in a way the rest of us are not, but personal attacks are never justified in my opinion.

The excuse of "you're putting yourself out there so you're fair game" is a load of bollix as far as I'm concerned. Bullies are using this as some sort of shield when really, it shouldn't be tolerated. At the end of the day, they are normal people who have built a career online. All people have feelings, even these successful bloggers!

That said, I watched the rant on snapchat that others have mentioned. I thought it was a little much, but I completely understand where she was coming from. Perhaps she should seek out a bit of counselling to help her cope with the anxiety and panic attacks she suffers from rather than ranting so much through social media. She would probably benefit more from ignoring and rising above the vindictive comments.

If my social media presence was causing me such distress that I was having panic attacks I'd probably get off it for a while, blogger or not.

And that would be a good move. Probably not so simple when you're entire career hinges on it though.

Online bullying is a huge problem. Bloggers do suffer from it in a very public way. It must be awful knowing that your reaction or lack of is in full view of everyone.

I'm all for constructive criticism, but comments that amount to nothing more than personal attacks about someone's body/face/job choice are not constructive.

I no longer use Snapchat at all. I was following a few well known beauty bloggers and few not so well known. I don't have time to watch two or three hundred second videos that are essentially just multiple two second flashes of this product, two seconds of that product. Or videos that show something for a split second, then an emoji or word pops up, completely obscuring everything.

Also, I don't really care about the personal lives of bloggers so updates on boyfriends/living arrangements/kids/personal rants/etc don't interest me in the slightest.

If videos were succinct and on topic I would probably still be following.

    Anyone agree?!

totally agree, the only one I like to follow is Pippa she seems so nice and Ollie is a dote, the rest just love themselves and are so insecure, always posing and fixing themselves in the videos. So Sue me is good to follow too at least shes not 100% wrapped up in herself

It is getting a little boring seeing them just constantly opening package after package of goodies. Although I am very jealous of the freebies. Lovelygirlybits is great though, her snaps always me a giggle.

Rosemary Maccabe is also very funny too, although I am not sure if she is a beauty blogger but worth a follow for her rants

Yeah I follow a good few on snapchat as well- I dunno, I don't mind seeing seeing the stuff they were sent but I really don't want to see a load of selfies and mirror photos.

Joanne Larby (The Makeup Fairy) seems like a nice girl but I simply just don't really have an interest in her gym stuff and weight loss, and I wouldn't be into her style of clothes so I'll be unfollowing her. Nothing at all personal, just her fitness stuff has really taken over and it's not my taste- but good luck to her.

A few others I'm kinda "meh" about are Rosie Connolly, Tara O'Farrell and Suzanne Jackson. Again, they seem grand but just not really my style. Although having said that, Grace Mongey (facesbygrace23) isn't really my style either but she just seems nice- although I dunno how she can snap so much, the girl is obsessed! Oh and another girl who seems really nice is dramaticmac- her makeup/hair isn't really my thing either but again, worth checking out.

I like when snapchat is literally just a little snap here and there or a bit of a funny rant, or even a quick tip. But constant selfies and mirror pics, fitness obsession and rants about anti-blogger sentiment aren't for me.

My favourite snapchatters (not all beauty but mostly) are jameskava, jamespatrice, lovelygirlybits, shivletzmakeup, aislingmkeenan, lauracunningham, rosemarymaccabe, hollywooddublin, nikkietutorials, and sharonleavy.

    Edit: It's actually cunninghamlaura, oops.

@Waxpertsellen seems really nice too. It's not that much beauty but she has blogged about going to a well known cosmetic dermatology clinic recently for example and came home and showed all the stuff that was recommended for her and explained everything she said told. I've always wondered what you get at that place so I thought that was interesting. She is also a really nice girl by all account so I've enjoyed hers.

Yeah Ellen seems lovely. And I really admire entrepreneurs, especially female ones, so fair play to her- same for Marissa Carter.

I think three main things I like when following people on social media is that they are humble, don't take themselves too seriously, and I really enjoy when people are funny.

I thought that girl who did the skit doing the rounds on fb about bloggers was really funny, just because in fairness it was so accurate (with obvious exaggerations! :D). Any blogger getting annoyed or offended at that really needs to cop on- ANYONE who puts themselves out there publicly can only assume there will be a little bit of slagging, and as long as it's just gentle mocking, who cares. It wasn't personal. I mean look at the likes of Gift Grub, Scrap Saturday- mimicry has been around long before now and no one should take themselves too seriously. It was only a bit of fun.

Now I will say that just because you're in the public eye, you shouldn't be subjected to ridicule about appearance, accent or personal preferences as to what you like to blog about (so long as it's not offensive stuff in your blog, obviously). But I do think it's fair enough if people dislike when a fashion & beauty blogger they liked to follow starts to put an emphasis on something else, like diet and fitness. It should be ok for followers to say that (politely) and not be made feel like they are being nasty online. It'd be like a pop singer changing to country singing, or vice versa. It's their prerogative to do that if they wish, but they shouldn't be offended if some followers don't like that.

So long as people on both sides stay polite, it's all fair enough, I think.

True but she's like a different person on tv where she seems very bubbly and lively but then in her snaps she's so monotone and talks so slowly and enunciates every syllable, it's very strange

On the subject of blogs, I miss the old days of blogging where it was a sharing of hauls/ purchases- now it feels like a lot of them are very PR led. Have noticed on some blogs posts that are clearly sponsored (and not disclosed as such)

To be honest, I get my inspiration from the latest purchases thread here on Boards quicker than blogs. What does everyone else think?

What's good about following so many bloggers on snapchat, facebook, instagram etc is when they all start posting at the one time (say within a day or two) about the same particular product, it's obvious that they have all been sent it to review. When they do this I find that I loose interest in the product and the posting, and the post about something different stands out more to me.

I'm also finding the most bloggers just snap a pic of what they bought/were sent and a quick first thoughts - they don't really seem to do much of an actual review about the product.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,039 ✭✭✭✭retro:electro

Some of them are just getting annoying now. They're just paid for advertisements and nothing else. So far this morning Rosie Connolly has managed to plug clear braces and renew skincare clinic. They're "looking after her" (doing her treatments for free/paying her for advertising) for her upcoming wedding and her snaps today were all about what they're going to do for her and how great they are. Most of her snaps are just plugs for brands with the odd cute kid snap thrown in for distraction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,963 ✭✭✭Meangadh

Yeah I'm watching Rosie Connolly's snaps now- and in fairness if I was offered free treatments in exchange for a few mentions, I'd be bloody jumping at it!

But for the viewers/followers, it is a bit boring and also very much (for me anyway) a case of "well that's great for you, but I can't afford any of that". Plus I only really want to see makeup, skincare, hair products etc- I don't really have any interest in seeing people's dentistry or gym routines

Haha she's saying she wants to whiten her teeth, her teeth are so white already! She'll be like Ross from Friends if she goes much whiter...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,039 ✭✭✭✭retro:electro

Maybe I'm just overly critical but I'd be suspicious of the Q&A's they do too. It just seems to be a more covert way of sneaking in a few brand names without being too obvious.

For example there's one girl I follow and she has obviously been sponsored by Tower Jewellers because she seems to have something new from them that they've sent her every week. Her instagram is flooded with pictures of their jewellary, like if you were following her you'd know thats where her particular pieces are from. Anyway in one of her Q&A's "somebody asked" where all her gorgeous jewellary is from, thus giving her ample opportunity to talk about Tower Jewellers and how amazing they are and bla bla bla... Bloody annoying.
