Wow Please please please let this happen.

HBO Confirms “Very Preliminary” ‘Deadwood’ Movie Talks
Yesterday, actor Garret Dillahunt tweeted “So uh…I’m hearing credible rumors about a #Deadwood movie.” I had the same reaction to that tweet that a lot of other people seemed to have: don’t even play around with this. Deadwood is serious business. Canceled in 2006 after three great seasons and a less than satisfying conclusion, there was talk at the time of two Deadwood movies to finish out David Milch‘s obsessive and idiosyncratic western vision. Those movies never happened.

But now HBO confirms that, yes, there has been some talk about a Deadwood movie. Really early talk, but that’s better than nothing.

Not long afterward, HBO went on the record to confirm that, yes, there have been some talks. But don’t saddle up just yet. The network’s official statement is:

In reference to Garret Dillahunt’s tweet regarding the rumored Deadwood movie, there have only been very preliminary conversations.

That can mean a lot of things. Creator David Milch said in 2011 that “I still nourish the hope that we’re going to get to do a little more work in that area.”

Years earlier, when the plug was abruptly pulled on the show, HBO had offered to give Milch a short 6-episode fourth season to close out the series. He was unwilling to go that route. That’s when the plan for a pair of two-hour movies landed on the table. But at that point resurrecting all the elements for the series — which had been a particularly expensive show to make — was evidently too difficult.

The TV landscape has changed so much now that Deadwood‘s fate might be very different today, and it isn’t without a little bitterness that we can imagine Deadwood being more successful now than it was a decade ago. Maybe this will be a chance to see if that is actually how it would work out.

One Deadwood star, Timothy Olyphant, has been busy with another TV series for several years, but now that Justified is finished, his schedule may be more open. And Ian McShane, whose magnificently foul-mouthed character Al Swearengen was Deadwood’s most attention-getting aspect, is working for HBO once again with a small but important role on the sixth season of Game of Thrones. So it isn’t difficult to guess what led to some conversations. Whether they’ll become more than conversations is something else altogether.

Here's hoping that they keep it exactly the same way as the TV show. If so, and it gets a theatrical release, then it'd get a guaranteed 18s.

I doubt it will get a theatrical release to be honest.

HBO are probably looking at the likes of The X Files & Twin Peaks I guess you can add Prison Break & 24 to the list of shows that have come back or are coming back in limited form and will make money for those Networks.

Of all the shows HBO made that could be made into a once off movie or limited series Deadwood fits the bill perfectly to draw back fans now they have HBO Now in the States as a selling point without the need for a cable sub.

Hadn't realized that. Seems a little baffling to me - what's the difference between six 50 minute episodes and two 120 minute movies, can someone shed some light?

Other than that by refusing the short order it was a risk that Deadwood would never receive any sort of closure whatsoever...

    Seems odd.

It might get a theatrical release internationally - Behind the Candelabra was screened as a HBO release domestically, but was given a theatrical release overseas.

Deadwood Reunion Movie 'Is Going to Happen,' Promises HBO President
Reports of a Deadwood comeback have not been greatly exaggerated. Quite the opposite, in fact.
HBO programming president Michael Lombardo confirmed to TVLine that he personally gave series creator David Milch the green light to resurrect the acclaimed yet painfully short-lived Western.
“David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” says Lombardo. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen.”

The exec says that the revival — which would take the form of a movie versus a limited series — was born out of a “palpable” sense he had that Milch “has something left unsaid” with regard to Deadwood, adding “I’ve known him for a while and it feels like it’s something he’s not done talking about.”
Timing wise, Lombardo says Milch has another project he’s currently working on, “But the understanding is that when he is done with that he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the Deadwood film.”

And what about the potential scheduling nightmare that awaits trying to corral the show’s busy, in-demand cast? “I’m going to leave that in David’s hands,” Lombardo says with a smile. “He’s confident he will be able to.
“The cast is unbelievably [tight],” he adds. “Some casts and creators form a bond that becomes relevant for the rest of their lives. This was a defining moment for a lot of them

    Great news.
The DVD box set holds pride of place on my shelf.

Hopefully its filmed in the same vein with no watering down of theme or content.

I really thought that Garret Dillahunt's tweets from last year were as close as we were going to get to a movie, but obviously not, this is the closest we're going to get to a movie! :pac:

The teasing ****s, they better do it! HBO head Michael Lombardo saying there's a "green light" almost 10 years after production isn't enough to take me out of the "I'll believe it when I see it" frame of mind, but this is the best sign we've had that it will happen yet.

10 years later, where do they go? With the aging of the actors, it's not as if they can immediately continue with the story lines that were left hanging at the end of season 3. I think we'll be going for a 'Deadwood Revisited' sort of vibe, perhaps with the town already having undergone changes because of annexation and the changes that were happening to America at the time. Hopefully we'll know soon enough.

Ian McShane, John Hawkes, Timothy Olyphant, Brad Dourif, W. Earl Brown, Powers Boothe, William Sanderson, Robin Weigert, Paula Malcolmson, Kim Dickinson, Garret Dillahunt, hopefully this stellar cast can be reunited for any revival.

Not to forget Keone Young's Mr. Wu -

Some of my favourite interactions while rewatching the show are those between E.B. and Richardson. Unfortunately the actor who played Richardson passed away a few months ago.

Hmm, just reading the obituary, he was only 63 when he died in October, therefore putting him in his early 50s during filming of the show. I would not have guessed that.

News from HBO today not much but it's something.

HBO programming chief Casey Bloys confirmed that
"Deadwood" creator Davild Milch is writing the script for a much-anticipated movie based on the series.

"We haven't read it yet," Bloys said. "I imagine it will be very good. I feel good about it."

HBO’s Deadwood revival remains in development — that’s the good news. The less good news is that the project has not progressed beyond the script stage — mostly because, well, there is no script.
“I haven’t read [series creator David Milch]’s script yet,” HBO’s top programming exec Casey Bloys told TVLine Saturday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “I know he’s working on it. But I have not seen anything yet.”

Asked to put odds on whether the long-gestating project will ever become a reality, Bloys replied, “I couldn’t even put odds on it,” before adding, “I don’t want to get your hopes up or disappoint you in any way, so I’ll just say I don’t have any news. Which I truly don’t.”

Last January, Bloys’ predecessor Michael Lombardo first confirmed to TVLine that Milch was given the green light to resurrect the acclaimed yet painfully short-lived Western via a standalone movie. “David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” he said at the time. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen.”
Lombardo went on to say that the project was born out of a “palpable” sense he had that Milch “has something left unsaid” with regard to Deadwood, adding “I’ve known him for a while and it feels like it’s something he’s not done talking about.”

Sounds like Milch is taking the procrastination approach of George R. R. Martin in his writing speed.

‘Deadwood’ Revival Movie Script Given to HBO, Ian McShane Says ‘We’d All Love To Do It’
A “Deadwood” revival movie might finally happen. For a couple of years now, fans of David Milch’s Western show have kept their hopes up that HBO would turn the series into a full blown film, the same way the network with the 2015 “Entourage” movie. Now, actor Ian McShane, who played Al Swearengen in the show, has revealed that a script for the reunion film has already been handed to HBO.

“[A] two-hour movie script has been delivered to HBO,” the English actor told TVLine. “If they don’t deliver [a finished product], blame them.”

The actor said he spoke to Milch “about some of” the script and will meet with the writer-producer soon. “I’ll be seeing [Milch] for lunch [soon]. We’d all love to do it… It would be nice to see all of the old gang again,” McShane said.

In January, HBO’s president of programming Casey Bloys confirmed to TVLine that Milch was working on a script. “I haven’t read [Milch]’s script yet,” the executive said. “I know he’s working on it. But I have not seen anything yet.”

A year earlier, Bloys’ predecessor Michael Lombardo had confirmed that a “Deadwood” reunion was actually happening. “David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” the executive told TV Line. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David that could change. But it’s going to happen.”

HBO’s top programming exec, Casey Bloys, told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Wednesday that the long-gestating project is indeed moving forward.
“The one thing that I was concerned about was I wanted a script that would stand on its own [for Deadwood fans and non-fans],” said Bloys. “[Series creator] David [Milch] totally delivered on that. I think it’s a terrific script. If we can do it on a budget that makes sense for us, and if we can get the cast together, we’re inclined to do it.”

Deadwood Movie Could Start Filming in Fall 2018
Deadline reports that production is eyeing a fall 2018 start date. Previous cast members, which included not only McShane but also Timothy Olyphant, John Hawkes, Molly Parker, and Brad Dourif, have been contacted and it’s a matter of getting everyone scheduled, which should hopefully be less of a hurdle with the filming date a year away and contracting everyone for a film rather than a TV series.

After so many times of announcing it I'd started to despair (announcing your plans is a good way to hear god laugh), I'm genuinely over the moon with the news. Happened to be watching the series again lately anyway (my wife thinks I have a problem) so it feels like ten years ago again when I first watched it, but this time I might see an ending.

Powers Boothe was great in Deadwood, even managed to be as intimidating as Ian McShane in certain scenes which was an achievement in itself .

    It really really is happening.

‘Deadwood’ Movie Starts Shooting With 12 Returning Cast Members & One New

HBO Films’ long-in-the-works Deadwood movie has begun production 12 years after the end of the premium network’s Emmy-winning Western series from David Milch. Most of that original cast is returning for the film, which takes place 10 years after the events of the series that ran three seasons from 2004-2006.

Ian McShane (Al Swearengen), Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock), Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), John Hawkes (Sol Star), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran), Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary), William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum), Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs) and Gerald McRaney (George Hearst) return from the original 36-episode run of the series from 2004-2006.

The film includes a new cast member, Jade Pettyjohn, who will play the character of Caroline. Her character info is under wraps, but the actor is next onscreen with Nicole Kidman in Karyn Kusama’s gritty cop drama Destroyer.

The plot, per HBO: The indelible characters of the series are reunited after 10 years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.

Milch, the series creator, wrote the pic, which is being directed by Game of Thrones helmer Daniel Minahan. Milch, Carolyn Strauss, Minahan, Gregg Fienberg, Scott Stephens, McShane and Olyphant are executive producers.

The Deadwood series was nominated for 28 Emmys during its run, winning eight.

In July, HBO president Casey Bloys tipped an October production start for the film, and hinted at a possible spring 2019 debut. He called rustling up the original auspices for the movie “a logistical nightmare.” The network received a near-$4.2 million California Film & TV state tax credit for the production. The hardest part of getting the film up and running had been synching up the schedules of its large ensemble cast.

Unless they've already made all the necessary plans due a second, I hope it's a one off. It's annoying when they plan on making a movie but then it doesn't go ahead. Just look at Stargate Atlantis.
Though one of the delays for this was the sets had to be rebuilt, so they may make more Deadwood to get the use out of them

I'm pretty sure the Deadwood town is a permanent location called Melody Ranch in California. Westworld also shoots some of its scenes there, and it was used in Django Unchained and other Hollywood productions.

Of course there is still lots of work for the Deadwood crew to carry out in order to make it look like Deadwood, plus there are the interiors like the Gem which have to be built. However, the town of Deadwood and the exteriors don't need to be built from scratch for the show.

I wouldn't take the sets as a sign that there would be more Deadwood to come or not. Over the years, it was reported that the main problem would be getting such a large ensemble cast of actors together once again and their schedules to line-up to film one movie, never mind another series. The cost of maintaining the sets during a lengthy contract dispute certainly played a part in the decision to cancel the original run, but I don't think it was the stumbling block for any reunion or movie.

For now, I'm just delighted to get this movie and I'm taking it as a one-off. If it does well and generates a new audience and revenue for the original seasons, well then who knows that could happen. Actors schedules and sets could be problematic, but if there is money to be made they will find a way.

This is the approach I'm taking to it, given we've waited 13 years since the 3rd season ended, i'll take the film as the definitive finale, anything that may hypothetically come after the film will be an added bonus.

Thanks to the mods for permission to post this here...

For anyone who might like to partake in some Deadwood-related fun (read: mystery, drama and paranoia!) we're running a game of Werewolf starting on April 14th over in the Forum Games section. In anticipation of the movie, the theme will of course be Deadwood. We have a few slots left if any new players would like to give it a go.

What is Werewolf? All of us who now enjoy playing once asked that, but it's relatively easy to pick up. Broadly speaking - it's a big game of 'Whodunnit?' with roles and teams randomly assigned to all players before the game starts.

If you have any interest, please come on over to the sign-up thread and put your name down to get started. The game is open for sign-ups until Thursday April 11th.
