Gyms in Blackrock - any experiences?

I'm just getting back into the gym after many many years of doing nothing - and hoping to find a good gym in Blackrock. I'm kinda skinny and looking to bulk up - need some proper help and instruction.

Does anyone have any opinions on the gyms in Blackrock? There seem to be loads but I'm not sure what the differences are or which might be better for me. Before I go looking can anyone give me their opinions on any of them?

Are they opening an additional place in Sandycove or moving? Saw the message on FB but was hoping it might be a second/additional gym :)

To the best of my knowledge, one half of urban fitness, Jason Kane, will remain in that building in blackrock, so still the best option in blackrock.

    Another +1 for Urban Fitness

Depends what you want I guess. Are you looking for a block of sessions with a personal trainer to get you through the basics and then go off and do your own thing or a coached class environment?

I emailed them and I got a message back saying they are moving to Sandycove - which is too far for me I want somewhere nearer. They also said it's almost €250 a month which is way more than I want to spend.

Good question, I'm not really sure. I suppose for now yes just getting a good program and do it myself but I'm told it's way better to have someone pushing you regularly so I need to see what my options are.

Now that urban fitness is gone, who's next best?

If you are ok with going 5-10mins up the road Synergy Strength & Conditioning up the road in Dun Laoighre is well worth checking out.

I'll check that out but really would prefer something nearer, blackrock would be perfect.

Does anyone know anything about the other gyms? Be-Fit? TNT, and dare I ask about Educogym?

TNT is a well equipped gym, with decent membership rates, personally found them a bit tardy when opening up at 7 a.m in the mornings (late, no shows etc) which was eating into my workout time! then they messed up my payment details and were pretty unprofessional about the way they handled it so I left. Can give you the name of a very good PT in there who runs bootcamp style classes if you want it.

Crossfit 536 around the corner is a more expensive option, but it's coached sessions and the head coach is a physiotherapist and their emphasis is in making people move better and as a result they have removed the olympic lifting from the main S&C classes and put it in a separate class too.

Don't know anything about Educogym tbh

Be Fit appear to be operating out of TNT now (they used to be around the corner but aren't there anymore)

    Educogym is not a gym.

The CrossFit is a good option.

There is a gym operating out of the Elite Fitness and Performance Academy as well, it's still the best place to train in blackrock imo.

For someone starting out, Newpark Sorts Centre has everything you need and I'd be pretty sure nowhere else will be able to compete on price. Always have offers on - includes a more than decent gym, classes and a pool.

It's not the Ritz but should more than suffice.

I'm interested as well as the OP in gyms around Blackrock.

Has anyone got feedback on crossfit365? There is a huge price difference between say TNT gym and say crossfit even if you hire a PT on top of basic membership for TNT - I accept crossfit in general is more expensive though.

    Any feedback appreciated.

I'll take a look at TNT - their membership rates look good.

So why is EducoGym 'not a gym'? What's the deal with it?

I've heard good things about CrossFit from people who do it - however a good friend of mine who works in the industry says he thinks CrossFit is like the 'Scientology of the fitness world'. lol.

I used TNT for a few months over the summer last year when Newpark was being renovated. It's a brilliant weights gym. 4/5 good power racks, bumper plates for deadlifts, full set of regular plates for each rack, prowler sled etc.

Never used any of their classes or the SBG stuff but what I did use was solid.

Depends what your goals are and what you want really. TNT and Crossfit are two completely different things hence the wicked price difference per month.

True, but regardless, the price of CrossFit is obscene. There are "boxes" (*shudders*) elsewhere in the country where you pay nothing like some of the sums you hear quoted for Dublin.

That's nothing to do with Crossfit.

Yah and there's houses elsewhere in the country that cost nothing.

And I can go to Bali and buy a drink for €2.

    Know what that proves?

Cost is location specific based off a myriad of factors like rent, operational costs, and salary / cost of living.

Which crossfit? There must be almost 30 affiliates in Dublin now? All varying in price.

What's obscene to you for a membership?

I paid €165 for a 16 month Ben Dunne membership a couple of years ago.
It was grand for going to on a Sunday or during the holidays when I wasn't using the gym at work (I'm a teacher).

I now pay very close to that per month in crossfit 536 in Blackrock and I get in average 13 x 1 hour 15 min coached sessions for that working out at €11 per session.
I don't have to think about what I'm going to be doing, I turn up, do what I'm told and go home.

Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder I guess

€250 a month??? Are you having a laugh?! And I thought Crossfit was a joke.

All the people who gave them the thumbs up on this thread - is that true?

    Hi,

Can I ask what TNT charge (as you know, no self respecting gym will put their prices on their website!)
It's like car insurance quoyes - call up with a different voice, get a different price :)

Did even better - checked their Facebook and they're doing €45 a month for January!
