Should so called "sluts" be pitied instead of condemned

Was inspired to create this thread after a few conversations with my friends:

basically, there's this girl we all know of and she has a reputation as the town bike. When she was in school, she kissed half the lads in our year (which wasn't a biggie, it wasn't sex) but then one night when the year was out, she went off with another girl's boyfriend. Although she claimed he told her they'd broken up, it's widely known that she knew exactly what she was doing. Then a lot of people from her former school got talking to people from my school and it turned out she had quite the reputation and slept around a lot. When school ended she didn't keep in touch with anyone as it turned out she was incredibly bitchy about the friends she did have behind their back and called one of them ugly (which is why pretty much all the girls in the year turned against her fully).

A year on, many people regularly see her in town in the backseat of a car having sex with a different man every couple of weeks. Me and my girl friends were discussing this and came to the conclusion that she was a slut who had no respect for herself. We then told one of our other friends (who happens to be male) and he told us that we should feel sorry for the girl if she has no respect for herself and there's obviously a reason she's sleeping around as she's clearly not happy.

I suppose what I'm trying to ask is do you think girls who sleep around in full public view and has no standards (it's well known unfortunately around the area that if a man wanted an "easy lay" he would go to this girl. She has even earned a nickname because of her behaviour), be pitied? Not criticised?

I'd pity her having to deal with rumours and judgemental people

It's a free country last time I looked so she can do what she likes. She's having fun and she obviously doesn't care what you or anyone else thinks. You are free to pity her or criticize her all you like. Do you want to tap on the window of the car next time she is with a man and tell her how you feel about her?

People use sex for lots of things...pleasure. Procreate. Self validation.

If its for self validation, yes, I would feel sorry for her. And life/man-wise, it will be harder for her.

I would also throw a shoe on the other foot and say the guys getting with her (who know her rep) also have issues going on for them.

    MOD

I don't really think it's up to the posters of tLL to decide what this woman is or isn't.
