Card or cash which one do you perfer ??

Im more of a cash man because its less time consuming and you escape some charges.

I saw a few people with wads of 50s in there wallets (whats stopping me or anyone following them attacking them and taking there money). The most people should have on them is 200 euro

nothing worse than standing behind someone buying a packet of chewing gum for 1 euro paying with card

I live in Australia where paywave is pretty much everywhere so I use card. Gone are the days of loose change. Card is king.

I use card for anything I can above a tenner. I find that as soon as you break a twenty or fifty it disappears and you're left with less cash than you thought. This doesn't happen as readily with card in my experience.

Cash, cards for whatever reason can leave you in a spot of bother.

    Contactless/ Card wherever possible.

KBC don't charge for point-of-sale transaction within the Eurozone. I left Bank of Ireland because they wanted to charge for cashless transactions in addition to the other banking charges (no problem with the latter, but cashless?).

I don't work for them (honest) but KBC are a pleasure to deal with after having migrating from one of the domestic banks. No drama, no problems, no cock-ups or unnecessary delays.

I use a card, but always try and keep 20 quid in change/small notes on me.

    F*ck the cashless society

    Card,
Cash is a dying form of payment.
I hate having to go get out money at 3am to pay for a taxi

Not sure how anyone can be anti cash. I can't count the amount of times that I've had to sort out a card only person when a card reader is malfunctioning.

But rather than display humility they prefer to go on a tirade at the poor person behind the counter who has no control over how a machine behaves.

Card. Can't even recall what bank notes look like. Quaint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 766 ✭✭✭ger vallely

Cash all the way for me. I think it's far easier to keep track and to know exactly what I have to spend. Also, as was previously pointed out, less charges.

Large transactions I'll use my card. Cash for most small buys.

    Card. Cash is dirty.

Card. Easy to keep track of what you spent and where using your statements. Withdrawing cash from an ATM and then spending it you have no way of keeping track of what youre spending (unless you keep track of everytime you use cash, which would be extremely time consuming)

Cash is quicker for small stuff
    Petrol or larger purchases card

If there was a quick payment method for small transactions with card or nfc would go for that

Once someone brings in a payment method that is card based but is as quick as cash, then that's what Ill use!

    Until then, card.

Was using card mostly for a while but now with all the scamming I'm gone back to cash. Take out a big wad of cash from a machine that's in a prominent place every now and then and keeps me going for a while.

Contactless is only on debit cards, no? And also is only for low dollar amounts.

All ATM cards are now Debit cards. Unless your are with a bank that is slow on the updates.

Cash, I am very good with money so when I pay the bills and transfer money to the savings accounts I take out my money for the week so I know how much I have and can spend. I find it helps me not to overspend.

I've a debit card that has contactless up to 20 yoyos, but two credit cards (which I normally use as they don't charge per transaction) that don't have contactless.

Why aim so low? If you're of a criminal mindset there are premises like shops and banks with much larger sums in them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

I rarely have cash - I pretty much live by card. I've been on holidays or working in foreign countries for extended periods where I've never needed to take out cash.

Card for everything generally works well, especially with contactless payments (and a big thanks Hailo!) but it can be a pain when you only have 15c in your wallet in a cash only shop.

Card. Very rarely carry any cash. Not really looking forward to moving back to Ireland where you have to pay fees for simple things like visa debit, contacted etc.

I like to take a certain amount out of the bank and make sure it lasts me the week. Until recently I wouldn't even order anything online.

i find it frustrating when using cash and I cant remember what went where when it comes to transactions. I often tried to do it up from memory on a bit of paper using receipts before I got a card, and even then there was things unaccounted for.

Card is king. Cash is annoying, having to go to ATMs, slows you down at check outs having to count change, security around having it delivered to/from premises, not being able to budget because you don't know what you spent the cash on which also leads to over-spending. The sooner it's done away with the better.

Hookers, pints and cocaine cash, for everything else there's mastercard.

Card for anything over a tenner...

Too easy to spend all the change once you break a note.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

I pay for everything with card but I live in the US so it's a really quick process. I carry maybe $20-30 in cash, just for parking or in case I need to pay a toll and that's about it.

I would never have more than €50 on me and would only take that out if I knew it was needed.

I prefer cash for small transactions. Card for bigger purchases, if a dispute is ever likely, you have documentation to fall back on.

More power to you, you are only one of a few, most women haven't a clue about money other than spend it as fast as they get it

I have seen 1st hand in the last few years in my old job the change from cash to card. It used to be 20% card 80% cash there 8 years ago. Now some nights its 90% card 10% cash. Thanks to that we never have change and i have had to refuse anything bigger then a €50 euro note because there is no change.

But myself i am card everything on anything over 10 euros.

Only things i would pay cash for still is drinking on a night out and going for coffee.
