Surprised there's been no mention of the news here yet but Dr. Dre is releasing a new album entitled 'Compton' later this week. He referred to it as his final album and also explained why he chose not to release Detox.
The rumors are true: Dr. Dre will release a new album in the near future. The rapper took to his Beats 1 radio show The Pharmacy to confirm reports of a Straight Outta Compton soundtrack produced by Dre as well as additional details regarding Dre's first LP since 1999's 2001. During Saturday's "Countdown to Compton" episode, Dre revealed that Compton: A Soundtrack will arrive on August 7th exclusively on iTunes and Apple Music. Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, the Game and many more will feature on the 16-track LP, which can be preordered here.

"During principal photography, I felt myself going to the studio and being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album," Dre said on The Pharmacy. "I kept it under wraps, and now the album is finished. It's bananas. It's an 'inspired by' album. It's inspired by Straight Outta Compton, we're gonna call the album Compton: The Soundtrack. I'm really proud of this." Dre also called the album his "grand finale."

Dre also revealed why he never released his long-delayed Detox: "It just wasn't good." "This is something you're not gonna hear many artists say. The reason Detox didn't come out was because I didn't like it. It wasn't good," Dre admitted. "I'm gonna keep it all the way one-thousand with you, seriously. I worked my ass off on it, I don't think I did a good enough job, and I couldn't do that to my fans and I couldn't do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you. I just wasn't feeling it."

On The Pharmacy, Dre was joined by Ice Cube and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray to discuss the N.W.A biopic and its much-anticipated soundtrack.

During the episode, Cube and Dre reminisced about first meeting in high school in 1983 or 1984 ("You're showing our age," Dre quipped) and how they bonded over their "mutual love of hip-hop." "It just grew from there into this crazy, life-changing relationship," Dre said of his friendship with Ice Cube. The N.W.A pair also talked about growing up in Compton and the biopic itself.

Ice Cube appeared on Philadelphia's Power 99 Wednesday morning and let slip the news about Dre's Straight Outta Compton soundtrack. While Cube gave an August 1st release date for the album, multiple sources told Rolling Stone that the album will be released at a later date than Saturday, which is ultimately when Dre confirmed the record. "It's mega. It's Dr. Dre, it's what everybody’s been waiting for," Ice Cube told the Rise & Grind Morning Show. "It's definitely a dope record, and he's dropping it all on the same day."

During a March 2015 radio interview, Dre first revealed that he was working on a soundtrack for Straight Outta Compton. "I'm working on something right now. I don't want to put it out there just yet and say that I'm definitely gonna put it out. But I'm really feeling what I'm working on right now," Dre said. "This would be a record that's inspired by the movie."

Looking forward to it! Probably a good few years too late in terms of hype. Which may be why he's releasing something now without the pressure or expectation

Hopefully it lives up to 16 years waiting since 2001!

I look forward to listening to it at some point but I don't think there's going to be as much fanfare and pressure about this one 'cause it's not Detox and it's not what he's spent the last sixteen years working on. From the sounds of it, it's a completely new album.

Tbh, that's going to lower my expectations of it.

On my first listen through, this is pretty much how I felt too. :(

Edit: Those were the two tracks that stood out. But i'm warming to some others, I'll give it a few more listens.

yeah album is a bit Meh ,
was kind getting good towards the end , i do like the track Animal with premo ,
    not much else really ,

It's a great hip hop album, but only an OK Dr Dre album. Love the beat for 'Animals'.

The album is definitely growing on me. Disappointed at first but I'm liking it more now. It's times like this you miss Nate Dogg.

A phenomenonal album, that's all that needs to be said. Not quite as good as 2001 but not far off.

'Talk About It' what a track :)

The production on this album is like nothing I've ever heard before, absolutely class.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

^^agreed, the production is excellent. the guests pretty much all bring their A-game too.
from that point of view, it's great, it's just a pity that there isn't any great songs really.

Very surprised to hear that most people here don't like it or are disappointed. I've listened to it 4 or 5 times so far and it gets better each time. The production is excellent, better than I thought it would be and I had very high expectations. I won't tire of this album anytime soon.

What's the story with a spotify release date? Doubt it'll be anytime soon with Apple looking to muscle in on their patch, physical copy release looks like the 21st in the States from what I can see, so Spotify thereabouts as well? Mad annoying

I gotta agree there, the production is insane! I loved this album, one of a kind!

Not a big fan after one spin. It's decent...but nothing incredible so far.

I've listened to it twice straight through and a few times on shuffle on the bike and I think it's mediocre at best.

You can only buy it in the Apple Store? I diverted off the motorway to Mallow X-tra Vision to try buy it Friday! Heard samples of the tracks on Ivan Yates hopless music review show!

After spending the weekend listening to this, my opinion has definitely changed. It has really grown on me.

    Some of my standout tracks

    For the love of money
    Animals
    Talking to my diary
    Talk about it
    Medicine man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭melted_face

to me anyway , it sounds kinda reminiscent of kendrick's new one . nice production that's constantly switching up being the main similarity .

'Satisfiction' my favourite at the moment, great samples, funky wonky beats and good real talk about fame and celebrity. 'Medicine man' is another great track too

I doubt a Spotify release will ever happen. My guess is that Apple plans to make sure more and more artists release albums exclusively on Apple Music.

I'd say it will be released on Spotify, just later. A newer spin on ITunes exclusive tracks as it were, delayed release.

Got it either way and gave it two solid spins. Not mimd blowing or a game changer but loving it so far. Maybe it'll give him the kick up the arse to release an actual Dre album. In the vein the Aftermath album did. Animals a standout but I'm a massive Primo fan so slightly biased.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,149 ✭✭✭✭J Mysterio

I understand that Dre has an exclusivity deal with Apple, but the delay to other outlets is a farce at this stage.

Its virtually encouraging piracy. I wont the cd loike.

This is an "actual Dre album" - it's the follow-up to 2001. It's not the soundtrack to 'Straight Outta Compton' or a compilation album. It's his third and final solo album.

True - he explained that seeing the movie come together inspired him to go into the studio and record new music (which eventually culminated in this album). The album name does includes "A soundtrack by Dr. Dre" but - strictly speaking - it is in no way a soundtrack to the NWA movie. It's a solo album.

I'm chomping to get a listen to the album, but I've limited internet access at the moment as I'm doing a bit of holidaying.

I've been chatting to my friends about it and it took them a while to get over the lack of g funk sound, but has really grown on them to be an outstanding album.

Fair fooks to Dre for scrapping Detox and getting inspired to release something new

    Loving the album
    Fave tracks so far;

    One Shot One Kill
    Genocide
    Issues
    Just Another Day
    Deep Water
    It's All On Me

I suppose it is I didn't read too much into it, I guess I just linked it with the film. It's all for charity as well which is fantastic.

Really love the album, Talk about it is a great first track, he just goes for it. Loving kendrick on deep water and Darkside/gone, really haunting at the end deep water and Loose canons. Also loving Loose canons with X, his verse is great.

Animals is reminiscent of the Roots song Criminal, loving the production from Primo. Could listen to the song over and over. Eminems verse on Medicine man is relentless. The tracks in between are fantastic like All in a days work and For the love of money are great, so much replay value from this album.

Nice album, no chronic by any means, but a solid album. I like how he touches on some of society's poisins e.g the narcissism era we live in, his verse on Medicine man is a great example of it.

7/10 for me and one of the better albums of 2015.

Listened to it from start to finish three times and it's growing on me but it's nowhere near the level of the chronic or 2001. Still a great album though, For the love of money and talking to my diary are standouts for me. Em killed it on medicine man too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,147 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Been listening for about a week, didn't like it at all at first but definitely growing on me, I just wish some of Dre's lyrics were stronger in songs like All on Me. One Show One Kill is unreal and Talk About it is class as well. Still hearing stuff I like. Pity it's not on Spotify yet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,428 ✭✭✭Talib Fiasco

Usually as I give an album more spins it gets better, but not in this case.

My problem with this is that there is no real "stand out" track and it's all just a blur of over produced noise with too many guest features for the vast majority. There is no structure and no direction. It's clear Dre bottled the whole Detox thing, he was trying to make it perfect for that day and obviously failed as the sound in demand changed and now it seems he's trying to make up for that, he's trying to satisfy everyone yet I feel he has failed in this.

It's one big mess. I have a big issue with some of the features, he's Dre for God's sake he could get the likes of Nas & Jay Z on this album easy. Guys like King Mez, come on. In terms of new guys it's crying out for guys like Ab Soul and Schoolboy Q. Hell I'd even welcome a Bishop Lamont 2015 verse over the crap on this. I liked some of Jon Connor's old tapes (his remake of The Blueprint is great) but he has no place here, he's a very odd guy to see on the tracklist.

It's 2015, Ice Cube, Snoop and Xzibit are passed it. I get he's trying to bring in guys from the past, but why not have some beats and tracks reflecting the past then? Also I wish Eminem would retire...he seems incensed to "rip" verses now but he doesn't realise he is terrible at making music now. He has lost the sense of balance needed in Hip Hop. There's a reason guys like Percee P never made a tonne of money, they were too focused on ripping verses instead of making good ear friendly music. And I wouldn't mind but Eminem hasn't had a good verse in years. It's just this angry and nonsensical rapping that people think is great as he's rhyming big words but there is no substance.

I think Talk About It is one of the worst tracks Dre's ever been associated with. This trap bullsh*t is terrible, I know Dre has gone more "poppy" but I didn't think he'd stoop into the trap hype. This album is crying out for some G-Funk, any sort of west coast sound. This trap autotune edited crap is heart breaking to hear. And this "Anderson Paak" guy needs to p*ss off, he's terrible whoever he is.

Genocide had great potential, but there's too many voices there, Kendrick did good though. As pop as it sounds, I quite like that It's All On Me track, more toned down and catchy. I actually got very excited when I heard the beat for the song The Game is on, the album needed a lot more of this...and The Game actually did well on this, and the hook is very solid too. Simple dope beat, good singer on the hook and solid verses.

For The Love Of Money isn't half bad either, again simplicity. Jill Scott should have got more time on this album. I used always welcome a hook by Marsha Ambrosius whenever I'd see her name on an album, but she is awful here, truly awful.

A word on Preemo, thank bloody God for Preemo. Best beat on the album by a landslide. It's actually a shame he gave it to Dre. It's actually west coast sounding as well which shows how much of a genius he is. But that Anderson guy would have to go and ruin it. Again it's heart breaking. There should be nobody on this hook tbh, the scratches were incredible, probably the first time I actually bopped my head properly to a track on the album. This was crying out for a verse from the likes of Nas, I can actually hear him on it myself.

Maybe I am just gone past the stage where I give a f*ck about the crap the likes of Eminem, Ice Cube, Snoop and Dre are part of. Even Jay Z has slipped in recent years. Maybe I just expected too much, perhaps. But there are some parts of here that are good, it's just Dre tried to hard, and again the bloody features. If you like this, then fair play to you I'm glad. This was one big massive disappointment for me though and I'm glad I didn't have to pay for this.

Top 5 tracks: Just Another Day, Animals, It's All On Me, For The Love Of Money, Genocide

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,970 ✭✭✭mufcboy1999

I agree on some of the features being a bit lack lusture alright. I've no problem with the likes of xzibit etc being on it, but there's a few really suspect one's on it.

But lads as far as soundtracks go, this is decent, very decent. No point in comparing it to his albums, because in truth this really isn't one to begin with.

I've listened a couple of times, I don't know how I feel about it.
I think initially there are too many features, but then I think that Dre cant really carry a full track by himself and needs someone to bounce off, so that justifies it. Then I think are the features good enough? I'm still not sure about that.

I need to keep listening though. At the moment I'm very mixed about it.

What's that supposed to mean? Compton is a solo album - just like The Chronic and 2001 are solo albums.
