Hello I recently purchased a go pro hero action camera and I am wondering if it is legal to attach the camera to my helmet by means of the provided curved adhesive mount which came whith the camera and to have the camera on the road. Also will it have any adverse affects on the helmet such as drastic wind resistance.
    Thanks Aran

And I apologise for misspelled tytle

I have one. I've used it on my lid.

Yes they catch the breeze and you'll feel its effects.

I doubt its illegal.. But if I was to advise you I'd say attach it with some Gorilla Tape (available from Halfords).

Ok well I'm new to riding and this is just mostly for me and my friends going around in the back fields and maybe when I'm in the city just in case God forbid anything happens but should I keep the adhesive mount off the helmet when doing my ibt or tests

I would attach it to the bike if at all possible rather then the helmet....I do have a helmet mount but prefer to stick it to screen of bike. Picture is better and safer just in case you crash and land on the side with cam.

Ok I'll look into that it's just for now the camera would probably be on top because of the shape of my helmet and it is full face just to be clear ps thanks guys for quick replys

It's perfectly legal to film in any public place.

It does add a tiny bit of drag if you're sensisitve to that, I'd consider a chin mount for a gopro, or on the bike as wonda says, although you end up missing stuff if documenting what the rider sees is your thing.

I've used a contour roam and a drift HD ghost, neither make much difference even at motorway speeds.

Its just something to think about, never been proven but word is that Schumacher brain injury was a direct result of the impact where the camera was placed. But only heresay at the minute....

But few stories of lads in US with bad injuries wearing cams on chest harness etc.

This is my post on My Camera location,

No Wind Drag, works flawlessly. May not suit all helmets, been using it for a year with zero issues.

Im starting to look to getting one, searching for the thread I followed/replied to where a make/website was mentioned. One site had a lot of reviews and I think they were for sale, techzone?

Anyway, Id more or less planned to have it on the helmet, wanted something that might be more flush like a mobius, did wonder if its a suitable place, but it shows more of what you are doing and can record what you are looking at, where a fixed cam is more limited in seeing plates or someone doing something out of the line of sight of the cam when its fixed, although the cam itself is probably more protected too.
Wont be getting an expensive cam though.

I recommend the Contour Roam2 Helmet Camera...

I do think the that the Go Pros while excellent are over priced compared to other rivals emerging TBH. Then again they are starting to do basic editions without all the fan fare.

I have only ever used Drift HD and Go Pros both are excellent TBH.

    Where did you get it?

I run an SJCAM SJ4000, same type camera as the GoPro, I mount mine on the side of my helmet. Have had it for a year now and no problems at all, there is minor wind resistance but its negligible really and doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me to be honest. I was in an accident in May just gone, where a lady pulled out in front of me, I was travelling at 60km/h and hit the ground, luckily without hitting the helmet at all. I've heard of injuries sustained from mounting the cameras on helmets etc but in my own experience I'd say the camera is more likely to snap right off than to cause damage to your noggin, that's just my 2 cents! As regards the legality of them, I've had Garda stop me in the last year and ask about the camera but that's as far as it has went, I've never been told to take it off the helmet or anything if that's what you're wondering. The insurance companies, solicitors and the Gardaí were extremely pleased that I was wearing the cam during the crash, it really saved a lot of hassle in determining liability and the rest. Hope that helped answer your questions a bit pal.

    Safe riding.

Contour roam 2 is nice, it has a slider for on/off so you can tell if it is even with gloves, which is nice. External mic is worthless though, all you get is wind noise. There's a lad on youtube that did an external mic mod but it's a lot of hassle and not waterproof after modding. No removable battery so not good for long trips.

Gopro and clones, good but I can never get over the size and form factor, just not aerodynamic at all. Maybe with chin mount. Loads of accessories cheap and chinese though. batteries don't last pissing time, but you can get external power: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJUBKCEDczI

Drift ghost is good, I have an external mic that I bury inside the helmet lining so you get acceptable external noise, engine noise, any stuff I say, that kinda thing. Another nice thing is it takes regular 1/4 inch camera threaded mounts, so the sky's the limit with fitting to anything, tripods, gorilla pods, selfie sticks, whatever floats your boat. Firmware is a bit cack though, I've had a few freezes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ae-g8oGSYI

I normally chime into these camera threads dur to the fact I use a sony action cam. Cant fault it so far. There is some wind resistance when doing lifesavers on the motorway but not too bad. I have the HDR-As30v camera
Dont forget to factor in a class 10 micro sd card

My Go Pro lasts 4 hours + easy with the Wasabi aftermarket battery (from Amazon) its an amazing piece of kit.

Never used other models. so cant compare but agree that its expensive. however i can use it for other purpose (due to the mounts) than just a helmet cam. So it pays for that (diving / canoing and fixed on my bicycle for road trips)

But yes its expensive. newer cheaper models alter that though.

This is a bit old now but I eventually went for a Go Pro Hero 4 Session for 220 euro. THe price has almost been halfed since it's release.

    https://shop.gopro.com/EMEA/cameras/hero4-session/CHDHS-101-EU.html

Very small, perfect for a helmet camera. Here's a sample video of a part of my commute.

Yeah they are getting cheaper i think they may even go towards 100 Euro this year, go pro are having a rough time in terms of share price their cameras are a once off buy and are not breaking so people keep them. But due to high price they would not by another.

They are having to reduce the prices of their smaller stuff. I think youll see it go lower again

Integrated camera would be sweet, nothing sticking out to get snagged on stuff or in the bag.
You could just connect it to PC overnight and it'd upload vids and charge itself.

Just remember to upload the footage to your pc or delete it regularly or you could end up like this guy http://cars.aol.co.uk/2016/01/25/motorcyclist-who-filmed-himself-speeding-at-153mph-jailed/

In fairness, that guy ended up like that because he was riding his bike like a retard. Very little to do with having a camera - lots of people have them without it being full of evidence of "things".

Has anyone looked into this camera yet?
I know its not on the market yet, but it should be out later this year.

Im looking into cameras, I think it looks good.

I dont know if Ill go for a drift, or the Hero 4 session (But I need to look if it has external mic support).
Im in no rush, so I might just wait and see. The prices on the gopro's are dropping, and the competitors are stepping up big time.

Looks really good, only problem I have is that I don't think it'll work with helmets with a flip front helmets

Dont know if its been mentioned or not, but there is a new action camera, Gitup Git2 that has gotten rave reviews.

Either that or the SJCAM M10+.

    Both have Digital Image Stabilisation.

    Git2 is about 120e

    M10+ is about 100e

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. That hotshot feature would be worth it alone. Pressing the button records the previous 15 seconds, if you weren't already recording.

Anyone know of any other camera with a similar feature?

Mine is a Contour ROAM 2:
    on amazon .com/ContourROAM2-Handsfree-HD-Action-Camera/dp/B009CN8X3C/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1441116206&sr=1-2&keywords=contour+roam+2
    (can't post link apparently)

Cheaper now than when I bought it! I've had it about 6 months now. The footage on it is crisp and clear in daylight. The lowest resolution is 720. Not much use in low light conditions unfortunately, but with city lights it's OK, and I have settings up to max lighting; luckily we only have 3/4 months of darkness after 6pm...

My only gripe is the sd card, I've a 4gb in there, and I'll get about 90 minutes recorded, but I bought a 64gb sd card, and the bloody thing doesn't recognise it, max size it'll take is 32gb, and can't get a firmware update to adjust that. So basically I either have to format it every other day or plug it in to a pc and wipe it.

I've it mounted to the right side of the helmet, pretty simple slide on/off. Good for what it is, wasn't expecting great footage in the dark it being an action cam and all that, but annoyed about the sd card size restriction.

Good side note, I haven't been riding like a gobsheen as much since I got it

The drift ghost does that with an external remote that can go round your wrist, can set it to do 1m up to 5m.

Which would people go with? Camera on the kid or 2 fitted to the front & rear. I still haven’t made up my mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 156 ✭✭Melted

Personally If I had to pick between the both I would go Helmet cam. My reasons behind this are because mostly because you can capture anything by looking at it because the camera is not bolted to the bike, only real downside is to make sure the thing is charged and obviously no rear camera. I would have both though If there was a choice ( I did at one stage).

Bike and helmet? I know one guy who has a helmet cam and a rear cam attached to his top box, nothing to the front. The system I’m looking at also has gps built into it, no idea yet on the name of it though, the company I work for have dci cards and that fuel card company also do these, they asked if we’d be interested in talking to them which I did, just waiting to hear back on it. They do helmet cams as well. If you have a fuel card with them you’ll get a reduction on that stuff so I said gwan sign me up for the card.

I've mounts on both and only mount on my bike unless i'm out for a spin and want to get some decent fottage

2 reasons i go for the bike over the lid, 1. at motorway speeds there is drag from the camera, it's not terrible but it's noticeable, 2. I don't like having my clocks in the video. I also generally find it less fiddly on my bike than on my lid.

If you're out for a hot spin helmet cams are better but for the daily commute the front of the bike is perfect.

Go for the 2 setups cork.
I've got a helmet cam and when I get time and money I'm going to install and front and rear cam on the bike aswell.
You never know if your helmet cam or one of the on board cameras stop working.
At least you'll have some sort of a back up via the other cameras.

Very fair point. Just waiting on cost figures to see what it’ll be all in. Not worth taking the chance without it any longer.

The vendors would provide some sort of mounting kits/ attachments, I had my front one bolted underneath my front fairing (below the headlights) it was discrete and could not bee seen. The rear one was a bit tricky, I used expoxy putty and molded a flat surface to mount the camera.

I have a GoPro on my helmet and its mounted on the side at the front.

Drag is massive at speed and you find yourself looking in the opposite direction to keep your head square to the road.

I stopped using mine on long journeys, riding from London to Fishguard my neck used to ache at Bristol due to this but around town and for rides uptown 1 hr its not an issue.

I used mine a lot on the continent on unlimited speed roads and with the go pro mounts you will have no issues, just make sure you have the mount set so the camera pushes into the mount in the direction the wind blows and install the white spacer to stop it coming out easily.

Wind noise on playback is not the best, I have a hero 8black now, its about 9 months old.
