Hi all. Tis me again :D

Was drawing in bales with a borrowed 22ft bale trailer the other day which impressed me and I'm thinking of upgrading from my 16ft.

What trailers do ye fine people have or have used. Probably go new because of the new trailer regs coming do that I'm covered.

What eould/wouldn't you do again if buying one new?

What extras would you have looked for.....sprung drawbar/extra tiehooks/ another rope box?

used a low loader the other day to draw in bales. 22ft long, twin axle and even empty you would know it behind the tractor.

Talking to a lad off here and he says to cut down an artic trailer

I have been looking at bale trailers myself lately and im going to go for 21ft ( 5 bales on the bottom) with room to operate soft hands . Take 14/15 bales of silage and 20 straw and 10 bags of turf in 1.5t bags

Brakes, lights and strong are my criteria , and well priced .

This trailer was a cut down lorry chassis and was too heavy. With 21ft you will only manage 4 bales with soft hands unless you can remove the rear hay rack. The hay and straw won't matter as you can beat them into the trailer.

Same criteria as myself but looking at further options like running lights etc. Want to future proof it and only have to buy once.

All new weights for axles and the likes and breakaway cables

Would a steering axle be handy?

Be a fair extra cost for that system

Most of Bale trailers in my area would be your bog standard single axel effort with one tyre each side....these are fine if ground conditions are dry but are ground tearers if land soft.
Luckily I get lend of a neighbours (we help each other out)...he bought it in Co Clare a few years ago, great solid one, single arctic axle with twin tyres each side...does no harm in wet ground if driven sensibly and is very steady for roadwork.

What length is it western. Only thing that is putting me off a single axle is the future max weights per axle which will be around the 10 to 12 ton mark

I heard from a neighbour that the sprung drawbar makes a big difference when carting bales if you're doing decent distance on the roads. I can't comment though as we've only ever had standard ones.

    10/12 ton is 13-16 x 750kg bales

I know my tractor is 4 pot and its enough behind it.

That's not including the weight of the trailer itself I bet

Contractor draws all bales here with a10 bale keltec. Works out at around a euro per bale. Wouldn't dream of buying a bale trailer. You're hard pressed to keep the bales stacked when he's in full flow. Baler (fusion) hardly out the gate before the keltec is finished. Most of his customers now using it.

I'd be looking to see if they're are two brake rams per axle. One on its own may give you great stopping power and you do see some trailers with only one.

I'd also be looking for one with the LED marker lights down the sides and maybe even work lights mounted down low (near the tail lights at the back) would come in handy as reverse lights if you're going to be delivering bales during the winter.

We cut down a 45 ft triaxel curtain sider into a 30 ft twin axel bale trailer a few years back.
She is on springs and has supersingles.
We never had any bother with traveling ground with it. Its easily pulled .
You wouldnt feel it behind a 130hp tractor but it would make a 4 cylinder bounce around a bit when fully loaded with silage.
No need for a steering axel as it doesnt get massive use. 30ft can be a big trailer to get in and out of places

My thoughts at the moment are 24ft, not sure of single or double axle, removable hay racks, brakes, LED lights and side lights and maybe a sprung drawbar.

personally id go with double axel especially if you are buying new. She will float way better in wet ground when overloaded and wont tear apart gaps/ gateways, less compaction as well.
Super singles wont drag as much muck out on the road as double wheels would

A box for straps is another must.

I have 27' twin axle twin 19.5 wheels on rigid axles sprung drawbar.Great trailer

    Dream trailer
27' twin axle on springs axles well spread 2' between wheels sprung drawbar
Agree on the super Singles but the twins are great to carry weight and 8 wheels instead of 4 so you are never stuck.
Timber floor keeps it nice and quiet.

    long, low, light Good brakes

Most yards I work from would be tight so I'd be wary of one that's too long. That's why I'm thinking of 22 or 24 max. I know that 27 is only 3 ft longer but it can make the difference sometimes

Lads up the road from us have a forge and they make a few trailers. There solid and built to last. The floor is curved in the way slightly so the bales fall in towards each other. Easy trailer to pull with good breaks and lights

If going new you wouldn't look into flotation tyres as apposed to super singles? We notice some difference in them on the silage trailers, the super singles would have a shore dug where the flotation wouldn't leave a mark.

Yeah I would like floatation wheels but they usually need special axles. Local trailer builders here use RoR axles so don't think they will work

We had a redrock trailer with super singles and threw floatation wheels on her, just sit out a bit wider. Have a woods trailer and did the same with her this year, that crowd in Cavan agri Gear? Supplied ten stud floatation wheels for us. Same fit as the super singles because as soon as any wheel goes soft that's what goes on her.

Those 300 series wouldn't pull the socks off a dead man let alone a trailer load of silage bales ! :D

Same here as well. 2 wagons with 560s under them. People wont believe you when you tell them they are some yoke in wet ground.
When we get a puncture on goes a supersingle.
The super single will cut open the ground compared to the floatation tyres.. My problem with putting on floatation tyres on a bale trailer is the cost of them for something that will be doing nothing and left out in the weather for most of the year. 100 euro will get you a supersingle with a rim.
The other thing is a clever operator will stay out of the wet spots in a field. load the trailer where it is dry. on a wagon/silage trailer you have to travel the wet ground

Cheers for that. Nice to know they will go straight onto RoR axles

Any idea on the specs of the tyres and rims so I could price them off agri gear

No idea! Sorry I can find out next time I'm at work if you want. I'll be able to tell you how much they are for rims to anyway but they aren't the cheapest but there a mighty job.

Is it a trick of the camera or does it look like the axles are right in the middle of the trailer? Trailer looks fairly short?

You can't see the front of it which makes me think that it's already cut or was a drag trailer. It wouldn't transfer too much weight to the tractor tho.

Considered doing one up alright but it's hard to get a good start frame

Looks to be a cut down triaxle, going by that there'd be 8ft from centre of rear axle to the back of the trailer, and the axles would be at the standard 1.3m spacings, so roughly 4ft which would put the front axle slap bang in the centre alright...

Will you have much work for this trailer? You'll kill that little massey the first hill you hit with 14bales up behind

Bringing 8 at a time is good going

You've a terrible opinion of the 398 Muckit.
She's alot more powerful than I think you realise ;)
She's tied to a 12 tonne dump trailer at times which she can handle.
She's pulled these size of trailers before and not a bother to her. Most work is drawing in from fields so if you can bring 3 or 5 extra at a time it's money well spent.

Just a lot of money to be paying out when you already have a good trailer that probably plenty big enough for the amount of contracting you do.

Why are ya interested in buying?

It wouldn't be only a bale trailer. Be using it as a lowloader for carrying the vintage machines about also and a 20ft+ trailer would be handy here for collecting heavy steel.

I have a trailer the same size as yours on twin 20x9.00s.
