Married at first sight - Would you do it?

So, yes I have to admit my guilty pleasure, I love to watch trashy tv and channel4 is brilliant at creating such programmes. Here is a link to this one http://www.channel4.com/programmes/married-at-first-sight

Basically, a panel of five ''experts'', including a reverend, psychologist, evolutionary and social anthropologists come together and assess 1,500 people in order to see who would make an ideal match. There seems to be some sort of profiling done and DNA testing etc, although I very much doubt the ''scientific'' basis. Then the couples agree to marry each other, only meeting as the bride walks down the aisle. They go on honeymoon and spend five weeks together, then deciding if they will stay together or get divorced. So my question is, would you do this? Would you give it a go and see what happens or would this be your worst nightmare?

For me, I can't think of anything worse than marrying a complete stranger on tv and then the pressure of trying to make the relationship work, getting to know each other and your partner's friends and families, all in front of the camera. I also wonder about the people who even agree to go on a show like this, is it a desperate attempt to finally find love? Ok, so maybe I shouldn't judge them so harshly since I enjoy watching such rubbish.

Would you agree to marry someone you've never met? 13 votes

And some people thought that letting the gays marry would devalue marriage.

Reality TV just gets stupider and stupider.

    Well, you only live once.

So don't mess it up by doing something silly like marrying a total stranger on television.

Are they actually legally married or is it just one these gimmick shows?

All the metrics employed to decide if people 'match' or not are probably quite sound. People with shared values and goals stay together and if the two people are willing to give it their best shot, it probably stands a better chance of surviving and thriving than many 'love matches'.

It all depends on whether they wanted a life partner and to give it a good try, or if they wanted to be in TV.

    Blind Date.

    TO THE MAAAAAAAXXXX!!!!

It wouldn't be for me at all. Are these marriages legally binding though? Really hope they're not. What was wrong with going out to a club or whatever and meeting someone face to face? There's loads of places to go if you want to meet new people.

As far as I can tell they are legally married.

I saw an ad for it and am pretty sure they are legally binding.

I found this quite interesting actually, and a perfect example of why this theoretical "by the book" approach you so often find in online dating just can't be banked on as a reliable source for matching with a romantic partner.

Humans are complex. You can't just find a bunch of criteria such as - is he smart, check. Does he have an X kind of lifestyle, check. Does he have Y kind of background, check. Is his family Z, check. Does he want A, B, C in life, check...and expect that to be enough to spark the totally unquantifiable and unpredictable chemistry that's either there or it's not when two people meet.

I found it interesting that the first couple - who seemed to have far more spark and chemistry and physical attraction to one another in the first episode - fell apart so quickly at the seams in the second episode seemingly from the pressure of expectation of the whole thing. I'd say you could marry me off to George Clooney and I'd still want out after a week with the circus of a camera in my face at all times and family and friends and strangers on the street nosing about the relationship like it was some sort of a car crash.

I found that same buzzkill of heaped expectations on a first date (on a smaller scale obviously) with some lad I'd met online a few times when I was single, despite the fact that under different circumstances we'd probably have gotten on like a house on fire and it might have eventually blossomed into something more. No chance of it though when there's a gun to your head and it's "DO YOU LIKE HIM THOUGH. DO YOU LIKE HIM DO YOU LIKE HIM DO YOU LIKE HIM!"

I'd do it, but only of it was the Boards version and it was with beks101. What could possibly go wrong?

I remember beat fm doing something like this before (probably not as scientific)

But married 2 people and let them away on honeymoon and had an update a week later
It went terribly wrong and couldn't have two people who were at each other's even on the interview after.....it was so bad it was funny!

Jenny Thalia is next on the list. She mightn't have me, since I only copped on to her name recently. :o

By Alanis Morisette fan do you mean a lesbian? :P Unfortunately I am female and I swing both ways. Ah sure we can always get drunk on cheap wine and see what happens :D

No, the wine, dine, 69 is one of her song lyrics!

The only problem with the above scenario is that I don't drink :(:)

Ahh, I haven't heard of that song! I wondered if Alanis Morissette had a lesbian following :o

Ah well then, how about a risky cup of tea with several sneaky sugars and see what happens? :p

    Lyons or Barrys?

If I was looking for a life partner and my goal in life was to have a wife and raise a family then yes I probably would tbh, just not on camera. If it wasn't a TV show and was just a general arrangement then I'd happily give it a go. If my wife is willing to work on the relationship I see no reason why we couldn't last. She'd have the same goals as me I assume because of the whole matchmaking process.

I don't want to get married or have kids though so I doubt it's for me.

Give me a few slices of toast and I'll be yours forever. :)

I bet the TV show didn't think of that one!

I'd do it, if I was at a stage where I wanted to get married, it's pretty much flipping a coin anyway so this couldn't be any worse.

    EDIT:
http://www.boards.ie/love.php?match=hot you now have to marry the first person on that list

I'd have to marry Wibbs :pac: That'd end well for sure.

Well, I was going to say who needs a panel of experts to do all the matchmaking, but a disagreement over something so fundamental, I don't care if they're Tiffany Amber Thiessen, Carol Vodeman and Kate Upton all in one...

    It's, tae!

Lyon's, tae, and don't give me none of your fancy Barry's! :p

All that being said, it's probably a good thing I'm married already as I'd be the very sort would be tempted to do something like that just for the hell of it. It worked out well when I went to my debs with a blind date, so I reckon I could do a five week holiday with someone. Not sure about after the five weeks though...

Such a simple formula, toast and some Barrys tea, if only those researchers knew! Well, you really are a cheap date, the toast isn't a problem, but I only have flora light spread and judging by the incredibly heated butter thread, this could be an issue :p

Well, thankfully we didn't get married then, who knows if this issue would have been picked up during the screening process. There could have been a physical altercation at breakfast the morning after the wedding, butter flying everywhere. Fine, fine, well that was a brief romance anyway, I'm off to console myself with a couple of slices of toast with flora light.

    I enjoyed it tbh

It's no different to arranged marriages or that ridiculous culchie match making fiasco that goes on over here.

They had a get out at 5 weeks if they wanted with an anulment(sp)

The fella from the first couple(Jason) has something to admit to himself imo.

That Kate one is beautiful, seems up for a bit of a laugh, was totally up for the marriage and has her own business. If she doesn't do it for you then you've no hope!!

When I was in Vegas in 08 I married an English lass who I met whilst drunk. Kid, divorce. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're drunk which I was so I would recommend it. Go for it OP.

Sounds like you had fun though, the dangers of Vegas. Well I'm already married (civil partnership) so there won't be any blind date wedding for me!
