Course it hasn't - there's been no reason for developers to have built for it at all up until very recently....

There still isn't. I don't look up bus times on my desktop or xbox. I don't code on my xbox or phone. Completely different use cases. Theres a tiny number of cases where I might use the same app across all my devices. Netflix is the only one I can think of at the moment.

They may build a UWP app but it will most likely be only used one on device.

That's fine, but we're not talking about your experience specifically, we're talking about getting developers to build these UWP apps. They need two things:

    A decent sized audience
Easy tools to reuse their existing iOS or Android code

On the latter, I noted that here was a really complex DJing app that got released as a UWP app last week, and it had used the iOS bridge to port its code from iOS. I hadn't realised that project had matured enough for that to happen.

You also need an app that the user needs on on all their devices. I don't see how that's unique to me.

That they needed a bridge to port apps from IOS and Android, suggests they are not attracting developers to UWP.

Nah, it just suggests that they understand the realities of how startups have to invest in their software development.

Pity they didn't understand that 5 years about when they started Windows Mobile.

    Ballmer didn't understand much.

Bad news in the last few days,

Seems that the current W10 mobile branch is going into maintenence mode.
And MS started blocking the upgrade from WP8.1 to W10m.

I think the end is near.

Having only recently bought the Lumia 930 second-hand, I was disappointed but not surprised with this announcement, knew it had to happen eventually, but was hedging my bets hoping that Microsoft would release a mobile device of some description this year instead of ponying up for what is still over-priced hardware in the 950XL. The HP Elite X3 is a thing of beauty, but again it's a prohibitive price-point for what it is.

Where did you hear the first one?

The second one isn't true - they've started blocking that upgrade path for *Insiders* only - phones that could get the upgrade via Windows Update still can. Can't imagine anyone who knows about W10m hasn't already upgraded, and the rest probably never would bother anyway.

Hmmm, I was thinking of picking up a second hand 950 XL. Are MS effectively killing off Windows 10 Mobile? I cannot tell from all the mixed information from various sources (Paul Thurrott etc.)

Unless you are a big fan of the OS or is a great deal.
    Otherwise it is too risky.

It will depend what you want it for.

If you use any Apps a lot see if they are supported on WP, or you can use the website.

Some feature may be missing for example last time I checked Netflix can't download on WP to watch off line like it can on Android.

I'll be using it via continuum to get some work done while traveling. I rarely use any apps. K9 Mail is about all and I can a Windows App alternative.

I had one when they first launched but had to send it back. It was a dreadful experience. From reading some reviews, it appears they have made some nice improvements.

It would be a pity to buy one again and development stalls/ends. Ala the Nokia N900... what a phone at the time though :)

I think there are slicker alternatives to continuum for traveling. But I know someone who does use it that seems to like it.

I think it's pretty unclear what's happening with Windows 10 Mobile at this point, but then that's also a potentially different question to what's happening with Windows on mobiles too.

I think we have to wait until the Spring hardware event or Build to get any solid idea of what's going on. At the minute you could reasonably predict that they're putting Windows 10 mobile into a separate 'long term' branch with maintenance but little in the way of new features. But you could equally reasonably predict that they're doing something with Windows 10 on ARM and CShell combined that will make Windows 10 Mobile as a separate thing completely obsolete.

Microsoft has typically left people bleeding by the wayside when it changes tech. So I wouldn't buy any current device with any expectation of longevity.

That said Windows Phone had a longer support than usual for MS.

Someone mentioned in the comments on this that were is a problem with older phones that even though they got the latest updates the updates were applied differently to different phones. My 640 is on the latest updates but I still find it buggy for various things. I no longer use it as phone.

My 930 has taken a spill and was wondering would it finally be worthwhile upgrading to a 950?

They still seem fairly pricey, even second hand, and the spec jump doesn't look significant at all.

Dropped my 950 and cracked its screen a few days ago. Dammit.

So its still usable and i think i can put in a new screen and digitiser assembly for about $100 but is it worth it? Has the time come to call it quits?

I do like the camera a lot.
