CO2 cartridges

I have used the search function of this forum and the latest threads on this topic are from 2013.
    My questions are:-
    1. are the 12g or the 16g cartridges the more appropriate for a 700 tube?
    2. what price are these things (around €1) is what I can find.
    3. if you were to buy bulk, would there be a good price offered, I have found 16g threaded X 300(inc postage) for about €255 = 85c each. any better around?
    4. If I were to be the organiser (and funder) would anyone (probably need about 20/30) be interested in splitting a shipment?? ie. I bulk buy and sell on for the exchange rate on the day in smaller numbers to many members.

I am Dublin based Drimnagh/Phibsboro/City Centre are my main haunts.

There were a few groups previously doing this, just trying to guage interest.

I use 16g cartridges. They will
    Inflate a 700/23c tyre to
Roughly 110psi using the full cartridge. 12g will Obviously get you less pressure but probably enough to get you home.

    I'd be in for 20 or 30.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭Skrynesaver

Stick me down for 20 as well.

I got some cartridges from the last bulk order, I have a feeling it was around €20 for a box of 30, but I could be wrong. I think they may have been 12g cartridges, I still have the box at home I can check at wknd.

These would have been 16g cartridges. I'm down to my last 10 of 30 from a few years ago...

    I'd be lost without these

Guy in Shankill does a box of 30 for a €1 each

Last time he was waiting for a shipment... then went on holidays... do you know if he has them now?

I have never used them but have heard good reports before especially for a bulk purchase.

I got them from that guy.
It appears now, that he none available

If they are threaded 16g cartridges that you are going for and you can get them at a good price then I'd take 30.

    Thanks.

I'd be in for 20 of the threaded 16g cartidges if you do order them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,561 ✭✭✭Eamonnator

I think, they come in boxes of 30. Might be handier to do in multiples of 30

At least one site sells them in 10x boxes of 30, or 30x boxes of 10, and the same price per unit

Slightly off topic but just seen a warning on FB about these. Picture is what looks like a canister, with warning to parents that empty canisters are being found, amd that kids are inhaling the air as a drug, warning that it can cause airpockets in the blood stream and death.

TBH, if they were doing such a thing, I would be more worried about the pressure causing facial injuries, or freeze burns from handling them, as the air exits.

Get them quick before there is a campaign to ban them!

    Are the cartridges recyclable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,520 ✭✭✭Alek

I think the warning is against Nitrous Oxide canisters, used in food industry, that can actually give you a high.

Inhaling pure CO2 can kill you quickly :P http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16499405

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,561 ✭✭✭Eamonnator

Plus the empty canisters are just that, empty. Nothing left in them, but air.

No, you can't return them for reuse, but I'm sure you can recycle them locally.

I just got a shipment of 20 a few weeks ago and an extra cartridge for a bit of hassle as he was away when I placed the order.

afaik he has them back in stock

Thats laughing gas I think, they're calling it hippy crack. Comes in the same canisters I think but they're all painted luminous colours

There is interest in approximately 90, plus thirty for me equals 120. any more interest, the way I am looking at it, unless there is a lot more interest is that the guy from Shankhill is selling them for €1, I reckon that they will cost me 85c each, so it is probably a lot less hassle to let someone else(the Shankhill guy) do the work for the sake of 15c per unit?

Unless anyone else knows of somewhere else that does them cheaper in bulk to make it worthwhile.

I might be able to bring in a bulk "sub-order" of minimum 60-70 (was discussing doing the same with a group from the club lately and had 6-7 people interested in a minimum of 10 each) and could probably get more if that helped enough? Just didn't want to wade in with it if it deprived anyone from boards!

If anyone is stuck for CO2 cannisters, you can easily pick up 12g CO2 cannisters in any Airsoft Retailer for under a euro each.

    two examples..
    Hobby Airsoft 12g CO2
    S.G. Airsoft 12g CO2

Hobby were recently doing a special of 20 cans for 17 euro.

Just thought it might be useful to some.

Good spot, but not much use if you have one of the smaller inflators requiring threaded cartridges, and also 12g would probably leave a 25c tyre pretty soft still.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 681 ✭✭✭wheelo01

@k.flyer - Both of your suggested ones are 12g and unthreaded, You can get 500 of these for 283 euro (depending on exchange rate on the day) which works out at 57 cent each.

@cython - forgive me if I am reading you wrong, you are saying you would take 60 or 70 of my order, or you are willing to do the ordering? Also, I will not be making a penny out of this, so there would be no toes stood on either way.
Your 60/70 brings the running total to about 200, so I would need interest of another 100 before I would commit to buying them(in order to get the est bulk price)

Sorry, not being a cyclist I didn't realise that they came threaded as well, I just presumed they were they were all the same and were loaded into some gadget to re-inflate the tyre.

Either way really, but to avoid muddying the waters I'd suggest maybe that I would take 60/70+ (would confirm numbers ASAP if you were agreeable, but would be in blocks of 10) of your order?

To be honest, I still have a good supply from the previous order, so actually might not have been ordering any for my own use, but was looking into facilitating a group buy for some of the club, also at no profit to myself. If it was a case of making up a number though, I was willing to possibly grab a few, but to be honest I'm hesitant to organise, and more importantly distribute (these were all people I would see anyway over the course of probably a given month), a full boards order if I might not actually be ordering anything from it personally (though as said, as far as you're concerned if you were happy with the above, I'd be ordering a big chunk, and I deal with my side, I just want to explain my own decision making in hesitating to actually do the buying!).

I will say that if you've any concerns about being left hanging for one person taking that much of an order (completely understandable!), I'd be willing to send you something towards it before you place it. Anyway, don't want to overly hijack your thread with this, but just maybe something to bear in mind if you're looking to make up numbers, and I can ask around for a few more here if you're short.

That sounds fair to me Cython, I'm gonna keep an eye on this, and if I get another 50 or so, I'll probably just go ahead, worst case scenario, I could get rid of them on adverts.ie

Hi would you consider including me for 10/15 cartridges? I work in the city centre (st stephens green) and also pass phisboro every day on my daily commute so can collect from you.
    Cheers

Cool, I'll firm up numbers on my side ASAP from those interested so far, and I can see if I can drum up any more interest (wider section of the same group/club) if that's ok? Might help you hit that 50, or the total of 300 sooner :)

Hello all that took an interest, I ordered these and they should be with me by Friday, I will then be getting in contact with everyone who expressed interest in the order that they expressed it, when they are gone, they are gone.

The 300 (30 X boxes of 10) cost €262.32 at the exchange rate on Saturday - Divided by 300 = .8677 (87 cent) so a box of ten will cost everyone €8.70. I don't think I can say fairer than that.

Easiest way is obviously to meet up in the Dublin area, but if needs be, I'll post at whatever the rate is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,833 ✭✭✭ballyharpat

If you are shipping, I'll take 20 or if you are gonna be in Killarney-or 30 if it suits you better-thanks!

I'll take a box of 10 if you still have any left.

Cartridges delivered despite my confused attempts to explain over the phone where I live, where to turn and who what where, while trying to change a baby's nappy.

Is it correct that the CO2 refills are only temporary and you should release and repump tubes when you get home? (this would explain why I thought I had slow punctures on a recent tour)

Yep - don't know whether the CO2 escapes or whether it compresses but the tyre definitely goes a little soft within a day or two!
