The first visit of the Tour de France to Bourg-de-Péage was back in 2010 for a stage that was heading to Mende. The former capital of the felt hat had however already welcomed the elite of road cycling on the occasion of the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2006, for a time-trial claimed by David Zabriskie. Before that, in 1994, in the twin city of Romans, the man of the day was Chris Boardman. Several weeks later, the Brit established a record that still stands (55,152 km/h) on the prologue of the Tour de France in Lille.

You would have to fancy a number of attacks today given the profile of the climbs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭Kavrocks

I'd like to see Bardet in a breakaway, an attack on the final climb and then a drive down the descent to victory. A 5 minute lead on the Peloton too to get him into the top 10. I'd also like to Nibali break into the top 6 with a similar form, attack on the last climb and drive down the descent.

I know it wont happen but that's what I'd enjoy.

With the 2 x Cat 2 climbs, I can see the other GC guys maybe having a go at Froome. It really depends on two things though. How their legs are after another tough week in the heat and how much protection they are going to get from their teams. Lets face it though, Bertie and Nairo have got little to no protection so far so it is hard to know how things will go.

I would like to see Gallopin do something today.

I think the support for all the other GC guys looks bad because Sky is so strong. On a typical big climb you'd see the 'selection' happen and then it would be mano a mano with the GC lads. So far we've seen the Sky backup guys dominate the GC competition all the way to the finish line which makes the other teams look worse than would otherwise be the case.

Darkglasses knows the tdf is effectively over 'thanks to Froome' so can't be bother anymore. :winking:

So is this stage just for a breakaway or will the GC contenders be active today?

I'd would guesstimate that the breakaway will fight for stage honours.

But I expect at least one of the GC boys to give it a lash on the descent into Gap.

    Two races today

One for the stage which will be exciting

But also a race between GC. I expect Nibali & Contador to try and put SKY under pressure if for no other reason than pride alone . They will attack on last climb and try and get a gap on the downhill
SAMU also great descender so could try to do something with TJ who can't match Contador & Quintana on the climbs

Sagan's DS thrown off todays stage because of yesterday's bottle throwing incident.

The motorbike seemingly got in the way when they were trying to change Sagan's wheel. So the mechanic chucked a bottle at the motorbike.

As Dastardly said, Sagan pulled over for a bike change and the motorbike stopped between him and the team car. Worse than coming between a lioness and her cub it seems.

The two breakaway groups have merged, creating a 23-man group:
Grivko (Astana), Riblon (AG2R), Sagan (Tinkoff Saxo), De Gendt (Lotto Soudal), Geschke (Giant Alplecin), Haller (Katusha), Irizar and Jungels (Trek), Oliveira and Plaza Molina (Lampre), Navarro (Cofidis), Erviti (Movistar), Hansen (Lotto Soudal), Golas and Trentin (Etixx), Voeckler (Europcar), Mate (Cofidis), Pantano (IAM), Fedrigo and Perichon (Bretagne Séché), Boasson Hagen, Pauwels and Teklehaimanot (MTN).

The peloton are over 10 minutes behind.

The teams who don't have riders in the breakaway are Sky (as expected), FDJ (Pinot is probably knackered), Bora-Argon 18 (Jan Barta was in the initial breakaway), BMC (looking after TeeJay), Orica GreenEdge (just hoping to survive), Cannondale-Garmin (as per usual have missed the break), and Lotto-Jumbo NL.

Sagan must be pretty fatigued after the last few days. I can't see him being able to stick with any attacks on the Cat. 2 climbs.

Looks to me he did that thing alot of riders do and peaked for Dauphine/Nats
I remember arguing this when people on here said SKY would be mad to select Roche

The Tour is about recovery and stamina not just speed on a stage race ..Roche afterall was 22nd in his 1st Tour and has not been lower than 25th (and he was injured that year) when not riding for Contador/Froome (and then he knocked it off so difficult to judge)

Hansen makes a break off the break at a speed of 41kmph. Sagan increases his speed to just under 45kmph. He REALLY wants todays stage.
