Momochi lost any right to an opinion when he "caused" a pause though, right? Gamerbee was free to take the round as he wished.

Not quite, he was free to take the round as he did. That's the rule.

    IIRC the choice is:
    Play on
Lower the health with as little meter gain as possible and time out the round.

You may also be able to even the health and play on. Either way it was a crap way to end it, if only because there was only one round left.

Felt bad for Momochi considering the reaction Gamerbee got but it's understandable.

Got interested and went looking- it's not very clear:

Accidentally pausing the game at any time during the fight may force you to forfeit the round (solely at a judge’s discretion).

    That's waaaay open to interpretation!

    EDIT: Actually:

Reporting Equipment Failure: Video game hardware has a tendency to break down during tournaments. Buttons or joysticks will occasionally break down in the middle of a match, leaving the player on the broken side at a significant disadvantage. The following rules will be used in the event of a breakdown.
In the event of an equipment failure, they player has the option to stop the Game in progress to obtain an replacement.
If a Game is stopped in progress, the reporting player must forfeit the current round.
New equipment must be immediately available. If replacement equipment cannot be obtained in a timely manner, the player must continue to play on their current equipment or forfeit the Match.
Once replacement equipment is obtained, the player is given the rest of the round to configure their buttons and test the new equipment. If the player gains an undue advantage by doing so (e.g. charging an abundance of super meter), they must forfeit the Game.
A player may opt to switch out equipment between Games at no penalty. When this occurs, the player will be given ample time to configure his buttons before the next Game begins.

    Still really open to interpretation.

Only open to interpretation regarding how the round is lost (i.e. does the other player get to gain lots of meter or not).

Quite clearly, the player with broken equipment loses a round.

Bruce was free to take the round as he wished once it didn't break the rules i.e, unfair meter advantage rule. "You're not allowed to gain meter but I'm gonna whiff jaggas till I get full super" would have no way been allowed, as it's a breach of rules and is really unfair. Bottom line is he could have killed Momochi (which was bad because giving E Ryu meter, even though Gamerbee himself would gain meter too, would have been bad. E Ryu with full super is a big no) or just let the clock run down to cause no meter gain. As I said whiffing jaguars would no way have been allowed. You either kill and get/give meter or you let the timer count down and leave meters alone. Second option given the character matchup was definitely better. He wasn't doing it out of sportsmanship, he was doing it because it was the best decision meta wise and because it was out of his control, Momochi had to forfeit the round. It ended the best way it possibly could have given the mishap.

People are saying Gamerbee was hurt more by the stick malfunction which is false, Momochi definitely was hurt more. Had the momentum going into his tournament point round and has Gamerbee's back against the wall. I'm not saying the stick breakdown was good but it definitely boded worse for Momochi of course.

But it's not a breach of the rules- the rules only say the person with the stick malfunction is not allowed to build meter- the point of my last post is that I found it surprising this situation is so open to interpretation.

The rules do make sure to mention judge discretion, so I'm sure on a big stage like this they'd step in if the person in the advantage situation was whiffing away. I guess!

Onion would have built his super to take it into the next round.......

    Play to win :pac:

Some might say that's dishonourable or lacks integrity but from my perspective there has to be rules to maintain that, not an assumption of how someone should act in the absence of them.

For me, there are two scenarios at play here.

    1) What happened to Momochi's stick was not his fault. He didn't press start/home button. Therefore he did not deserve to have his opponent build meter AND win the round. The way Gamerbee acted was, imho, correct.

    2) Player 1 presses start/home (intentionally or otherwise). In this case, I would argue that the punishment should allow for your opponent to build meter. It is a real distraction and should have dire consequences.

The rules should reflect both of these states/cases. Determining whether or not they actually pressed the button or not might have to be on the honour system, but give it is already kinda ambiguous, I think it would be an improvement.

If the player gains an undue advantage by doing so (e.g. charging an abundance of super meter), they must forfeit the Game

Although this is referring to the person with the faulty equipment, it clearly states here that building meter is a breach of rules/can cause you to forfeit the game. Bruce being rewarded the round is his reward, getting meter for it would be ridiculous and no way allowed. You either let it rock and carry on or take a round. It's completely unfair and is unsportsmanlike and definitely would not be allowed to build meter. Taking the round is the reward, it ends there.

But yeah I do understand what you mean about it being open to interpretation, it's confusing! Given the integrity of the CPT I'd imagine they wouldn't have allowed it anyway. I still think the mishap was handled the best way possible by the staff and players :)

Considering Momochi was one round up, I would have preferred restarting the game. I think this would have been a much more satisfying ending to the tournament. And equally as fair considering they both had low meter which was about the same.

It was less fair for Momochi than Gamerbee. Gamerbee got a round out of it and cut off any momentum Momochi had. I think the rules say to take a round anyway? Restarting the game would have been great for Bruce

Rules say take a round. Restarting the game would have been more or less the same result in regards to fairness. And it's unfortunate for Momochi but he caused the pause, he suffers the consquences.

But regardless of fairness, ending the tournament with a final round was a mistake.

Am I the only person that thinks the rule is silly? I'd rather see a different rule for a paused game.

How about if there is a pause then the other player gets a full jump in combo? Sure some characters might do more damage than others, some might put you on your back, some might put you in the corner, but you're not waiting for a time out or the mental strain of the timer slowly counter down the seconds to a disaster of a stick malfunction that might cost you the biggest tournament this year. Anything is better than losing the round and losing momentum

that's a great idea. Or, you could say the person who was paused on gets a hard knockdown, how they do it is their choice. So if the person they're playing pauses delibrately to stop pressure, the other guy could replicate the exact situation, or even put him in a worse one!
