I am really interested in toning up and gaining muscle. I used to run a lot and look very delicate at the minute and really want to build muscle on my arms and tone my stomach but don't know where to start. I was looking into kettlebells classes twice a week would they be good? Or should I just get weights and train myself at home? How did everyone else start?

couple boardsies ran an intro to lifting day thingy a couple years ago

they both coach me now :D

we had someone in oly class today who is a beginner with a pilates background so stuff like that is ok for total beginners too

A good few years ago a couple of boardsies (g'em and jayroc) wanted to get more ladies involved in lifting. They wanted to break down stereotypes surrounding lifting / resistance training, misconceptions associated with same, and how not to be afraid of lifting heavy weights.

They offered to run a few free ladies only lifting workshops which generated a huge amount of interest, so they went ahead and ran them in Raw, (facilitated by COH) I went along, and have been hooked since!

I would try out the kettlebells classes and take it from there.

Got a trainer at the gym (qualified in Strength & Conditioning) to show me the barbell basics, read loads, watched loads of YouTube videos then started New Rules of Lifting for Women. Never looked back :)

Well I started last week so...I asked one of the guys working in the gym to show me correct form and went at it. Starting off I'm doing lots of little isolation lifts then moving onto compounds in a few weeks. I suggest jsut asking in there!

One random question for those in the know, I forgot to ask. The lat pull down machine goes from 1-12, what are the weights likely to be?

Usually lat pull down machines use 5kg plates but it's very hard to quantify what weight you are actually lifting, also a lot of gyms don't lube up the poles that the weights slide up on which can make a massive difference.

The main thing is to try and progress
