It will take a while to hear from them waiting myself as soon as you get registration details from your college show these to the social welfare your application should be processed straight away then!

Nope the only letter you get will say you've been approved for it or refused if you've been approved they will ask ya to let them know the start and finish starts of your course, so when you register for college get the register office of the college to fill out a letter for ya saying your now a registered student at there college to give to your welfare office

I was in last week about it. Was just told to hand in the form a wk or 2 before the course starts and then just bring in the form with the start and finish date of the course and it will all be sorted then..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 jaydow15

I was told to hand the form in asap which I did a month ago. Il go in next week and ask them whats the story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭Mrs cockett

Doesn't look like any one has got approval yet so. It would be nice to know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 372 ✭✭youandme13

What form do the college sign and stamp?? Before it used to be on the btea application but they don't have that section anymore..

eta: Mrs Cockett you can't get accepted until after they have official confirmation from college that you are registered student with them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 jaydow15

I thought you get accepted pending a registration letter from the college you are attending?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 marble2015

Yeah I'm pretty sure you get a letter saying you've been provisionally awarded BTEA first, and then you get them a letter of confirmation of the start and finish dates from the college

    This is correct

I got a letter saying I have been provisionally awarded it last week, so I just need to send in letter from my college. I applied for it in May though so I was waiting a good while.
Last year though I didn't hear from them till the end of August and I had to meet with my case officer in the social to go over what I would be studying.

I inquired from SW yesterday and was told it would be another 2 weeks approx before decision would be notified to me

I am waiting on approval myself. I was told there is a huge list of applications so it could be a few weeks before it is sorted. I presume you can still collect payments from the post office if the application is not processed by the time college starts???? Anyone know the story there?

They just got back to me today saying that I don't qualify because I don't satisfy the 9 months period on a qualifying payment.
But this is totally crap because I am getting a qualified adult payment for the last 11 months and now I have to apply for JSB because my contract ended on 14th of this month, I just hope this payment would qualify me because from what I was told when I went to Intreo today the problem is that I need to get a qualifying payment IN MY OWN NAME immediately before starting course.
I just hope everything gets sorted ... otherwise I'm screwed.

Ah that's **** :-( , hope you get it sorted, if you don't get it you could always do a fetac course for the year because you only need to be on it for 3 months to get btea for that and then you'll qualify for your uni course next September.

How long were you waiting to hear back from when you applied?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭rosmoke

I know, it would be such a pitty because I got all my hopes up and I got accepted to a really good college, I got all my fees awarded by susi, everything is settled, my wife also starts a postgrad course so both of us are going to be without any funds, I was hoping to get at least btea.
I am already 25 and I would finish college when I will be 29 years old, I don't want to wait one more year.
So I satisfy the qualifying period, the only problem is that I have to get a payment in my own name in order to be eligible for BTEA, but guess what ! This rule changed in 2nd of June, before that I could've got BTEA with only the qualified adult payment.
I hope to get the JSB sorted really fast. Do you know if I can discuss with a social officer the BTEA decision after the start date of the course? What do you understand from this paragraph ?
You must apply for BTEA before your course starts (or within 30 days of the course starting).

This is where is mentioned on welfaire.ie website :

From 2 June 2015 qualified adults must be entitled to a qualifying payment in their own right before they can be approved for BTEA. The rate payable is based on their entitlement.
Before 2 June 2015 people who were the qualified adult of a person who can claim BTEA, could qualify for BTEA in their own right.

I applied a month ago, they got back to me quick enough..

    Thank you !

I was just told by social welfare to fill out the form and get a letter from the college saying I was accepted into the course. Anything else I need to submit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 jaydow15

Definitely appeal. There is some discretion I think for people that dont satisfy the criteria. Also get onto your TD there is an election comming so you might be surprised what they will do for you. Im due to start the 7th but supposed to sign the 8th. Anyone know should I sign til I get the lettrr from college for the BTEA to go through and does anybody know how long it takes for the payment to transfer over from jobseekers to BTEA?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,928 ✭✭✭✭Panthro

What did you have to submit jaydow? The form and an acceptance letter from the college is it?

Hey, I applied ages ago and got my letter of pending approval or whatever awhile back. This is my 2nd year on BTEA and last year I got a letter saying when my payments would start a week after the first letter, but I haven't gotten that letter yet. Also, yesterday I got a letter saying that my next sign on day is May next year - did anyone else get this? They know I'm going back to college, it's really annoying me that they keep sending me out letters like this.

No joined up thinking. I am sure you will get your btea payment as soon as you notify them you have registered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭afriendlyshark

Mrs cockett, I have notified them, I've given my letter from the college which is why I find it weird I'm getting all these letters. My college letter says I'm not finished until June, so I don't know why they're saying I'm signing on in May.

Is it possible / a good idea to apply for both vtos and btea? and just accept one or the other then? I have a college interview friday but the closing date for vtos is friday so have to have the form filled out straight away and handed in after the interview if they offer me a place that is but there limited places on the vtos scheme so If i dont get that can I still apply for btea?

I still haven't gotten a letter  What date is your payment being made into your account? I get JSA on a monday, so if mine was to be paid in on a date after that does that mean I've to go a few extra days without money?
