Jesus on the side of the road

A woman from the parish erected a sign on the roadside opposite her house. It's your traditional image of a light emitting arms outstretched Jesus with the slogan "Jesus, we have our Faith in you". It looks to be of a permanent and expensive design.

I'll be passing it everyday for the foreseeable future and I'm not too sure how I feel about it. Its ostentatiousness is a bit off putting and has me in mind of children's "Santa Stop Here" signs. Maybe she's dying and wants to make sure that her soul will be saved.

I've no problem with religion myself and think that it can lend a certain old world beauty to life when it's not used to put down people or further an agenda.

I'm wondering what yer views on her decision to put up the sign are? A legitimate and innocuous manifestation of the woman's ardent belief or a kind of proselytism?

Maybe it's not religious? Jesus is a common enough name. Man city fan maybe? Jesus Navas...

First I gong to pretend I know what this is proselytism.
The I am going to say definitely a kind of proselytism.

I hate signs in general. They're everywhere. Mostly it's health and safety gone mad. Drive through the beautiful countryside and it's ruined with an ugly council sign every 10 metres. Ban signs. We all have sat navs anyway. No need for them.

That would be the easiest act of proselytism of all time, if anyone changed their religion, or "converted" from aetheism just on the strength of a roadside image.

Complain to the local council. I don't think people can just put stuff wherever they fancy without permission.

I'd hate it near me, that kind of thing looks awful.

Well if signs and adverts didn't work, we wouldn't have signs and adverts I suppose ;)

There's a few signs like that around Donegal, particularly on the approaches to letterkenny, stating 'Jesus I trust in you'. No idea who maintains them, as a number were vandalised with the addition of an well-placed h, but they were replaced sharpish

I have an idea, Erect another sign next to it using the same Religious freedom. Church of Satan is looking for you. I would say the same person would be on the blower fairly fast to get it removed.

I wouldn't let you loose on the advertising industry. No advertising campaign ever relied on just one static roadside advert.

Yes, because the only place you see religion is that one sign...

Such is the intrinsic nature of a sign, to communicate a message

The message is a demonstration of the the woman's faith. If there were no message to be communicated, she would not have put it on the side of the road she would have put it on a poster and put it in her bedroom

Given my memories of what elderly peoples houses were often like in Donegal, its entirely possible she ran out of room.

I used to be a coach driver in the UK. The only time I had an accident in my whole coach driving career was when a group of Christians from Ireland hired the coach and made a prayer for the driver before we set off.

I'm glad that you are able to discern her intentions. The OP was not sure what she had in mind.

It's a mere coincidence, I happened to hit upon a word spelt backwards.
