Surely it is Kanye? He has told us that It Is He.

I'm not a rock superfan or anything, but Kanye? I think my understanding of music might be a bit off (I am old, after all).

Who do you think The Greatest Living Rock Star On The Planet is?

A rock star needs to play an instrument!

    On a serious note... Moby.

Now I know that'll get a laugh but the guy has made a huge range of different type of music and plays nearly every instrument known to man.

Prince too for that matter. Even though he is bat**** crazy

    Living?

The man was a corpulant mess when he was alive, several decades six foot under are unlikely to have improved him

Bruce Springsteen. Still does a good three and a half hour set, on a good night.

Dave Grohl, some people still living have been better than him in their primes, but many of those are quite washed up now. I believe Dave Grohl entirely embodies the rock star lifestyle.

The Boss. Who else but Springsteen could give such energetic 3-hour shows well into his sixties?

    Kanye West. Obviously.

Bruce gave fantastic shows recently in Ireland and has huge love for his fans, whereas Garth Brooks.. well lets not go there

The only one who is still making great and rockstar-esque music and has the not media controlled attitude of Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed etc it has to be unquestionably Kanye

    David Bowie, obviously.

Brett Anderson also gets the nod.

Paul McCartney is still alive, and if we're gonna talk about cultural influence was there ever a bigger influence than The Beatles?

Is he headlining Glastonbury or making great albums in the last decade? No. We're talking right now.

The greatest living rock star (in the true sense of the word 'rock' at least) has to be Ozzy.

Will be 67 later this year and is still giving it his all..

    Billy Idol.

    Billy Idol.

Yeah, good shout actually. Seen him at Vicar St just before Christmas and he was amazing, no sign of him going through the motions as many performers of his age are prone to do. If anything he is just as energetic on stage these days as he was back in the 80s.

Has to be axl....having naps before gigs and not going on stage until he wakes up and running up curfew fines every night....pure rock star

Already been said, but Lemmy. No one living comes close, the man personifies rock.

Also if you ask most of the people mentioned above, they will tell you it's Lemmy. Except Kanye, obviously.

Best frontman is obviously Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode, he also did the heroin od/heart stopping thing to confirm his rock star like credentials...but whether electronic rock qualifies is another thing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,066 ✭✭✭Washington Irving

David Bowie. Honorable mention to Jagger, Richards, Page, May, Townshend, Strummer and Iggy Pop.

In terms of contribution to music Paul McCartney has no equal, but I don't think he encapsulates 'rockstar' in the meaning the question implies.

For those taking the question as currently performing rockstars then Springsteen. Grohl isn't a bad shout either though I'm not a huge fan of his music wise.
