This is it: the most important car for Alfa Romeo in years, the Giulia saloon. It’s just been revealed in Milan, and my word, is it pretty.

Unlike the last Alfa saloon, the also rather dapper 159, there’s a hell of a lot more substance going on under the skin. The platform is mostly new and shares elements of its underbody gubbins with the Maserati Ghibli. Oh, and that platform is rear-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive as an option on some models.

    150624_alfa_romeo_giulia_hp3-558ad8eac0435.jpg

The news keeps on getting better, as the range-topping Quadrifoglio Verde model - pictured here - will have a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 “inspired by Ferrari technologies” that packs 503bhp. Yep, Alfa doesn’t just want to gun for BMW’s 3-series, it’s going for the M3’s jugular.

    150624_alfa_romeo_giulia_hp2-558ad9231ea73.jpg

The QV will weigh around 1500kg, thanks in part to its roof, bonnet and prop shaft being made from carbonfibre. It’ll do 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds, have a 50/50 weight distribution, and feature snazzy technical bits to improve the handling like torque vectoring and an ‘Active Aero Splitter’.

There’s currently no official word on what engines will power the less bonkers versions of the Giulia, or when the car will go on sale, but word from the launch event in Milan suggests order books will open Spring 2016.

What do you think of Alfa’s new saloon?

Still an Alfa, sure it will break down or explode within 24 months.

Mine is a 2010 and on 191k km and has so far done neither of those things, unlike say, both of my VWs.

This is the sort of thinking that Alfa has to break the mould in now. Ejets who've never had the pleasure of driving or owning one doing the usal pub talk rounds ' Ah sure it's an Alfa, break down , blah blah'

It was great for us for a while , costs are low to buy a used one and their a great great car for the money, far better than paying 3 x the cost for a boring , bland and yes UNRELIABLE BMW or VW , and I can say that cause I've owned a few of each. Hated the Beamer , never again.

But Alfa need to sell these new and it won't have a reliability issue , neither did the 159 or the Brera or the Guilietta, even the bloody 166 was rock solid and that was back in 1998 it began production.

I've only been left standing once with an Alfa and the clutch had gone at 125k miles , original clutch.

Ah lads can we talk about the car and not the usual to and fro bull**** about alfas ffs!

I think it looks great, more aggressive styling than alfas of the past? Especially the front end. Id like to know what other engines it'll come with because id say almost none of the bonkers version will be sold in Ireland. I assume there'll be a diesel? Id take one over an M4 anyway.

No word on the Diesals as of yet but they have confirmed there will be Diesal models.

For the petrols it's looking like this I believe.

1.4 Turbo (Possibily mutil air similar to the Guilietta engine but it'll be a new engine)
    1.8 Turbo
    2.0 Turbo
    3 Litre V6 Single & Twin turbo??

Mostly Diesal sales over here because of the high tax but the UK will sell a good few GTA models and V6's I'd say. Probably get a few 2 litre petrols over here as well , they estimate these will be fairly fuel efficent and have between 200 - 220 hp which is not too shabby with the power to weight.

I personally love it , but if I ever buy one it would be a second hand V6 and it'd be over in the UK to get her...

In all honesty that was a stupid post!

The car is a fantastic looker, i lived the 159 and this has won me over totally.
    That red is fantastic.
I'd buy one in a second, which once never really said about an alfa before.

Edit: wow that's amazing, they named a trim level after a boardsie :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,670 ✭✭✭quadrifoglio verde

I hate the look of it. Everything else is great but it has none of the Alfa style that the brand is famed for .I'm not seeing anything that would make me turn back and look at it.

As for the poster going on about reliability my daily is a 19 year old gtv with 163k miles and 20k miles done since I got her last May, without any issues.
Surprised it didn't spontaneously kill itself many times over.....Oh wait that's the rx8s job

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

Has the looks of a monster I like and I want.

If you have never driven an Alfa then you wouldn't understand but they are proper drivers cars.

Yes can be a bit unreliable but if you bought this I somehow think you would be well able to afford to look after it correctly.

    What a machine.

    It looks amazing IMO.
    I'd settle for a decent spec 1.8 petrol :D
But even that would be out of my price range!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Irishcrx

The more I look at it lads the better it gets...that's how I know it really is an Alfa..It reminds me of the 156 GTA except more modern..

I'm sure it is going to be a stunning car but the styling has gone a little too german for my taste. The back end could be off a next generation skoda.

I'll hold my judgement until i see it in person and rush off to the bank like i usually do when alfa release a new car though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I love the look. It's very NOW. Which is a great pity as it won't hit the roads until 2017.

I still stand by what I said in another thread, this is a very early car to woo a potential buyer for Alfa. Only very early prototypes based on the Maserati Ghibli have been spotted testing.

I think it looks absolutely smashing. It's the car Alfa needed to build and they have delivered.

I have a vast soft spot for Alfa's, but I think this looks ****e. The fact Sergio Marchionne rejected two or three designs before it makes it even worse......

Same here. Really dislike it. It's like a weird Japanese Audi hybrid.

I really like the back of it but the V grill is very dated IMO, but it is aimed at its niche market, reminds me of an Audi from certain angles and a Lexus from others

What goes around in Italy is that it won't have the same 2.2 diesel the Cherooke has, but it will be a dedicated unit; 2.0 or 2.2 are the most likely capacities, with powers depending on turbocharging from 135 to 220-230 hp.

There is also an insistent rumor that they will have a look at the 3.0 V6 diesel that currently equips the Ghibli, which could be offered in its original 275hp and an uprated 330hp version. They are keeping very tight lipped about this, anyway.

Alfa swears they'll be able to take the first orders, at least in Italy, before the end of the year, which would put deliveries somewhere near March 2016. It looks like a tight schedule, but they did design and build a new car from scratch in little over two years (after the previous plans were scrapped), so never say never.

The V grill is the V grill, all Alfas had one since the '50s. And why is it that nobody stops one moment to think - what if it's the others that, over the years, converged towards more Alfa-like designs? Audi's design director is Walter de Silva, alumni of the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo and "father" of the 156, 147 and derivatives...

Thanks for that, I agree I think we'll be seeing this car on the roads next year and the 166/169 replacement model will follow it the next year, they have a plan in place and I expect production will kick off very quickly.

There was a post put up on Alfa Owner showing the evolution of Merc , BMW and Alfa from the 80's up to now. I agree , I think the other designs actually followed Alfa models rather than the other way around and when you follow that chart you can see how that might be true.

Of course that V is present in the Giuila design, it's an Alfa feature...and a good one at that.

I will be very happy when this starts appearing on our roads

And hopefully somewhere down the line I will get my hands on one

it looks like a nice looking car from all angles, nothing ground breaking but just a good design

I think the current 159 still looks great in a decent spec as well

    That is just pure beauty.

I'd want to drive that, even if it had an engine from a 1985 Honda 50 under the bonnet.

I like the stance but would echo the comments on the other thread about the rear quarter windows. The lines just look like someone changed their mind mid pencil stroke... Always liked the hidden rear door handles on Alfas too...

Small niggles that wouldn't put me off one if I could afford to play in that market though!

I've never driven an alfa and always had my perceptional reservations on them, but blimey when I saw this the other day, It genuinely is one of the nicest cars I've seen in a long time, I can honestly say, coming from someone who would be an avid Audi/BMW lover, on looks along this car has won me over, especially after seeing the "new" bland A4 today. Has anyone seen images of the interior. My only concern is that when the images are shown of the non 500hp model and the bread and butter diesel models may not be as nice. I hope this car takes off as the luxury saloon segment in Ireland is saturated with a4s and beemers and maybe this is a sign of some of the smaller brands getting a chance of survival as the economy picks up and people look for something different!

Wheels and some of the trim such as the lip spoiler on the boot wont be standard I'd say but it'll be mostly as is I'd say.

Interior trim will vary model to model

Looked at their overall line up proposal this morning , engine wise it looks like were getting...

    4 petrols

    * 1.4 Turbo - estimated 170 hp
    * 1.8 Turbo - estimated 200 hp
    * Unknown CC 4 pot Turbo estimated 300 - 350hp
    * V6 twin turbo - estimated 500 hp

2 Diesals , which I don't want to elaborate on because I hate them and they shouldn't be seen dead in an Alfa =)

I think its beautiful. And I think much of the comparisons here are fundamentally flawed.

Great Work Alfa, cant wait to see them on the road.

Any word yet on prices and launch date? Surely they're not going to wait until well into 2016? Seems silly to "launch" a new car and then not release it for sale for ages after? Would think you'd loose all of the buzz around a new launch and even the styling would loose its sharpness as peole get used to it on their heads.

Piece of cake:) €12 for the ticket, Aer Lingus and LH have early flights out from Dublin & lateish flights back so you can do it in a day (though you'll get more out of it if you've two days-the show is massive). Getting to the show from the airport is dead easy on the train too.
