Audi A4 (B9) Being Revealed 29th June 2015

    http://www.gtspirit.com/2015/06/11/next-gen-audi-a4-being-revealed-this-month/

It looks like the long awaited official release of the new Audi A4 is happening next Monday.

The link above includes the first undisguised spy shots. It'll be easier to form an opinion on the car when the official specifications and images are released but does anyone have any thoughts?

With the reduced weight, there should be some significant effiency gains. If the reports of 180hp from a 1.4-litre TFSI engine are true, I'll be quite impressed. The 2.0-litre TFSI is based on Audi's new technology and should be extremely efficient. However, I'm not sure I'd want to be the first to jump on-board with this. I'd give the engine a year in real-world use before considering purchasing this version.

I wonder who supplies the design department at Audi with photocopiers?

If the 1.4 TFSI engine can produce 180 bhp, you'd wonder why there's a new 2.0 TFSI also. Having said that, I'm looking forward to hearing and reading about these engines.

I have an A3 Saloon with the 140PS TFSI engine and it's a nice nippy motor with plenty of poke. If that engine is tuned to put out 180 horses, would it have any obvious downside?

I hope Audi make both those petrol engines available in Ireland, though.

As Marathonic posted, I'm not sure about buying the new 2.0 motor. Are there likely to be 'unknowns' with new engine releases, or are they pretty predictable nowadays?

Dull, just like every other Audi. That is lazy, lazy car design. It should sell by the bucket load.

Cookie cutter exterior with yet another new LED light graphic, lovely interior. Does anyone care?

Agree with others on the design. It's nothing new - just some minor tweaks that will be all but unnoticeable to the general public.

I agree with Tippman1 though, the engines are going to be the interesting part.

Personally, I see a shift from diesel to petrol over the coming years - the UK government have already admitted that they got it wrong by gearing the tax system towards increasing sale of diesels.

The petrol engines in the new A4 could go a long way towards starting this shift given the mpg, motor tax and VRT rate that may apply to them.

BMW had issues with their engines up to 2011, albeit the diesel version - so it's not unknown to have big issues in modern designs.

The engine should be well tested by Audi but nothing comes closer to highlighting the problems in an engine than a years real use by ridiculously poor drivers (not a snipe at Audi drivers there) :D

To be honest, I'm not sure I'd buy ANY model of the new A4 until it's been on the roads for a year. I'd want them to have time to sort out any niggles with, not only the engines, but the new platform as well.

To be fair Audi are considerate towards minimising hitting existing owners residuals :)

Does anyone know whether the S4 details be released at the same time as the A4 or is it generally at a later date? I know the RS4 will be an additional year or so but not sure about the S4.

Mazda had a reliable forced induction "4 1/2 stroke" "5 stroke" "miller cyle" , whatever you want to call it, engine 20 years ago. I'm sure Audi's will be no less reliable. :)

According to this post (scroll down to 2nd last post near bottom of page) on GermanCarForum...

    http://www.germancarforum.com/threads/audi-a4-b9-spy-pics-info.44249/page-31#post-752322

...the S4 won't be unveiled till a later date. I believe this is the norm for Audi new model launches.

I think it's the most ugly audi I've seen. Even worse than the A8 from 2010.

Bland, depressing and will be overrated

You do understand you are looking at a spyshot in black cladding right? I'll post a photo of the undisguised car in blue next monday here and please let me know your opinion then.

Yes I can see rear taillight shape is disguised and the front end obviously has an ill fitted grill etc but from what I can see it's got a bit of a hump on it. I think the front might end up like the current 3 series with a sudden dip toward the front.
And I don't fancy the tone of your post either.
I've seen alot of renders etc of the new A4 and some are quite nice but I'm not sure how accurate they are based on what can be identified from this car

    That's given me a chuckle :D:D

Maybe I'll stick with the reliable Alfa and become a dreaded fanboi.

In all seriousness I thought the new Mazda was pretty good.

    I'd hoped it would be.

    It isn't.

The response times from aftersales just rubs salt in the wounds of the numerous engine and brake failures.

    The new Audi A4.

Coming 6 inches from your rear bumper soon !

Is it the engine oil rising that's causing issues? We have a Mazda3 and CX5 in the family both with the Skyactiv 2.2D.

Usually a year or so after isn't it?

Looking forward to this launch. If they make a 2.0 TFSI DSG quattro I could be very interested.

What you are trying to do is basically like trying to imply a woman is ugly under a burqa - its nonsensical. My post wasnt intended in the tone you picked it up. I merely advised you withhold creating an opinion on a car you havent seen until you see it properly on monday.

I have seen the car and its quite nice in my opinion. It swoops quite low at the front.

Although I dont think I would ever buy one I feel Audi are one of the nicest looking modern cars on the road IMO, not many nice cars being made any more.

Their sportback /liftback models are in a different league to the clumsy efforts of bmw. And they make nice estates. 4 door saloons just not my thing.

C class anyday over Audis and BMWs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭mailforkev

Better than the current one anyway, really does only look like a nip and tuck though. Porsches are less evolutionary than Audis these days.

I do like the interior though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,687 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Weak enough rear end on the saloon and abit of a dip towards the front like 3 series. Not as ugly as I thought it might be but for a new model, it's a joke.
C class is now clearly out in front in terms of appearance in that segment.
Is that a fixed screen plonked on the dash? Dont like that in the Mercs and don't like it here either

Interior is nice. Not sure about the instrument screens. I'm sure it can be tailored, but it looks distracting as fawk as its set up there. Also hate those gear selectors. Were they styling it after an Airbus' throttle. Outside is as boring as expected.

Looks awfully similar to an 08 reg A4.

Totally predictable, should satisfy it's regular customer base.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,226 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

People who buy Audi's generally don't care how the car looks, how could they, they are all much the same. What they do care about are a fantastic interior, feel good factor, attention to detail and build quality. All present here.

I quite fancy an A4 to be honest.

Really? In the past 6 years we've had a 09 A4 from new and 12 A6 from new and neither have given any moments hassle, and have covered near 400,000km between them.

You can argue about how reliability surveys are constructed and the various bias within. But Audi consistently do poorly in them. Skoda being the only bright spot for VAG. The recent warranty direct survey had them in 33rd place as a brand. Fourth last on the board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,906 ✭✭✭Comhrá

Must say the exterior design is a little underwhelming, but totally Audi.

The interior looks good alright, but is that big info screen permanently fixed?

Hopefully not. The A3 screen can be disappeared with the press of a button to give a nice clean unobstructed dash. From the picture above, that screen looks ominously like a fixed object. Please tell me I'm wrong. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭Capra

The kick in the teeth about Audis appalling reliability is that they are very expensive to fix.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭RedorDead

Heres some different shots of the car. Silver shows the lines of the car in its clearest form.

I dont get why people expect it to be wildly different? These designer guys know what they are doing. This car has been in development since 2009 and has gone through numerous customer clinics to reach where it has. Audi has never been one to wildly change designs following a successful model. Evolution not revolution.

From spy-shots I thought the front was going to be more TT-like. In fairness, I was expecting it to be a gentle evolution but it's much more subtle than even I thought.

The silver colour & better spec above show it off a bit better tho. It's lost that line which droops slightly towards the back which I never liked & if it's wider with a longer wheelbase the proportions have to be better.
    (Disclaimer: I have a current, pre-facelift A4)

I don't think anybody really expected anything very radical, but there is a bit of a theme at the moment of supposedly all new cars that look more like mid-life updates of the previous model e.g. Mondeo, Passat etc. It appears that many big manufacturers are going through a very dull and conservative phase in terms of design, and Audi (among others) have always been a bit that way inclined. They are obviously scared of doing anything too adventurous in the fear of putting off buyers, which is understandable in the current climate but still disappointing, and there is no harm in people expressing that.

You have to say fair play to Citroen for coming out with the Cactus when there's so much "Careful now!" design going on. There is a black and grey cactus near me with some red trim. I like that cactus, I can see how Audi buyers wouldn't go for it though
