Agree, the last 2 were terrible looking, after such nice 147s, 156, 166, Brera etc.

The motoring world needs nice Alfas.

The sporty sedan rests on Alfa’s new all-wheel-drive Giorgio platform and will come with a 510-horsepower, twin turbocharged V-6 gasoline engine retooled from an engine built by Ferrari for the Maserati Ghibli and Quarttroporte sedan.

To be fair they made nice saloons anyways so i wouldnt be to overly worried, but the the engine mentioned above is actually true we wont be seeing too many of them which is a shame

Will the more normal variants be AWD too or is that yet to be revealed?

It will be RWD as standard and I'd put money on it being delayed by at least another year

After the dross coming out of Germany these days this could be good.

Its going to be RWD..I actually like the MiTo.

This one has been delayed long enough...

Engines here will probably be a 2.0 Diesel and possibly a 1.4 petrol turbo or 1.6/1.7 petrol turbo

The Irish people will only be interested in the CO2 figure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I've read it will also have the 1.6 diesel available also. I'm very much looking forward to this. I expect and Irish launch in late 2016 tbh which means I'd happily make it my first new car.

Rumor is that it might actually be called Milano, rather than Giulia

Don't think you will see too many of these sold over here and the majority of those that will be bought will have the weedy small diesel engined version.

If they expanded their dealer network they might sell some. Although this place is fixated on VAG SH!TE for some reason

Someone has welded a Lexus on to the back as well.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's far from finished but has been created to attract investors or even a buyer for Alfa. I'll eat my hat if it hits the market on time. Another Saab 9-5?

    Alfa-1.jpg

Rear lights not very Alfa, but could look ok.

Big question is if the front is good like the 159 or woeful like the MiTo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I suspect it's curvy like the Gulietta from looking at the pics, especially the curved wing and bonnet line

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭Capra

I cant help but be massively underwhelmed by it. As a 159 and 156 owner it is incredibly dull from the two leaked photos. Like a Mazda 3 crossed with a BMW 3 series. The side view in the other photo is so similar to a current 3 series it is actually hard to distinguish them on a quick glance.

That quarter window in the back alone annoys me. Alfas haven't had those for as long as i can remember and it was always a destinctive feature, incorporating the revolutionary hidden door handles on the 156. That very strong looking hip line that was on the 155 and 156, and to a lesser extent the 159 is also gone, another distinctive Alfa feature. I still think the view from the rear quarter panel forward of the 156 is the most beautifully designed part of any saloon car. A genuine high point in automotive design. The front of the 159 was also stunning, particularly in TI trim. It looked like nothing else.

This...this is just bland. It could be anything from those photos. There isnt a distinctive line on it. Look at those door handles, exactly the same as every other car. The 156 had buttons and the 159 had very nice raised lift handles.

I might sound raving but they are the little touches that made Alfas distinctive in a sea of clones. Even when the cars had their flaws they still had nice touches that you knew were not in any other car. I bet the driver oriented dash is gone too. Bah, I didnt expect much when the Guilietta arrived though. There will be no high revving T. Spark engine, there will be no 5 cylinder diesel. It will have a small high output turbo petrol 4 cylinder, a turbo charged performance V6 which is impressive but characterless, a "range" of 4 cylinder diesels which are all basically the same but with different levels of turbo boost. Cars are so incredibly dull these days, this Alfa just confirms it to me.

Or i could be completely wrong and it is a beguiling mixture of old and new distinct from every other car on the road.

EDIT: It will be rear wheel drive, it will come with a Ferrari derived V6 option and it may very well be a very good car. So there are actually some tremendous reasons to be happy but I dont see why they cant do that without making it look exactly the same as every other car on the market...

Door handles? Colour coded? Are they mad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,028 ✭✭✭H3llR4iser

I do see quite a few Alfa styling cues in there. The dome/cockpit shape is very reminescent of the ones from the 156 and 159; The whole "low nose, high arse" stance of the car, the short downward tail, the black spoiler on the lid and the composition of the rear window send me back directly to the 75.

But the proof is in the pudding, let's be honest...the nose will be what will make the car.

What I don't like in these pictures are the black rims, they look absolutely awful on any car; And the door handles...they'd be better chromed!

Will they target the rep market like they did with the 156?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭Capra

I'd imagine they will have to go for reps as I really think they have to get them on the road and be seen. Particularly since the dealership network is sparse in Ireland and the UK.

It appears to be quite dull but I guess sales are the most important thing as this HAS to sell. Otherwise they will go the way of Saab. I dunno though, its certainly no GTV or 156 in terms of style.

We’re still waiting on today’s full reveal of the Alfa Romeo Giulia sport sedan, but we now know that right away, it won’t be screwing around. Apparently the car will launch with a 510 horsepower, twin-turbo performance version designed to fight the BMW M3. Che bella!

Automotive News Europe reports the car will be called the Giulia Quadrifoglio, and it will get all that power from twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 “derived from the unit that Ferrari builds for the Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans.”

Other versions of the Giulia will get 2.0-liter four-cylinder and V6 power. It’s based on an all-new platform that will come in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

More on this as it comes in. Get excited, and learn to pronounce things in Italian.

I don't expect to see (m)any on these isles anyway, but it'll be nice to have another RWD in the mix - even if it is an alfa. Now if only they could make good looking cars.

I assume that when you say 'local time' you mean Milan in which case it will be 18:00 Irish time.

That website doesn't give a time zone which is very peculiar for a supposedly 'global' event.

Clearly they sell sufficient numbers to justify manufacturing right-hand drive models for the UK and Ireland. Then there's Australia, NZ, Egypt and Japan......

Official photos have posted on worldcarfans website. Front is nice enough I guess. Looks kind of like a Jaguar XF with an Alfa grille.

Not a bad looking car by any means but I dont know if its an Alfa.

    I'd post a link but I cant.

People would have said similar things about Lancia 20 years ago, now look at them. Every brand can disappear if it becomes loss making. Rover owned 25% of the UK market in 1988.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭Capra

Okay, I think its actually a very good looking car. I really like the grille. The rear quarter could be any car and I dont particularly think the back is anything to write home about. It is much, much nicer than an A4 , even the "new" one we have seen or a 3 series which is a good start. I think the new C-class is the best looking of the Germans and its at least as good looking as that.

I just wish it was as stunning and unique as the 156/159 were when they were launched. Still the Ferrari engine should make up for that considering the 159 had GM derived ones.

    I'd have one of those.

QV one does 0-100 in 3.9. Yes please.

They're trying to push it globally and break the US so I can see why they played it a bit safe. Like Jag with the XE, saw one in the flesh the other day and from the front doors back it's really not great looking at all. XE dual exhausts are much too close together also.

A4 is a snoozefest, new one unlikely to look too different I reckon; BMW 3 is alright looking if not exciting. The new Merc C and Volvo S60 would probably now be my favourite looking of the class.

That is a massive exaggeration. Look at the photo directly beneath your comment, how can you say that is a terrible looking car? That interior render is so low quality you cannot tell anything from it. I think it's very BMW like too and I dont like that but you really cannot tell from that photo.

If that was any car other than an Alfa Romeo I think I would be making a mess on the keyboard. As it is an Alfa I think it is slightly disappointing but it will still be one of the nicest cars on the road in that segment.

Those performance figures are outrageous. 50/50 weight distribution. Alfa have had the styling 100% perfect for years but the driving experience slightly lacking while still being very good, I am willing to try it the other way around for a change and hopefully the next one will have everything. A GTV/Brera replacement is what we are all waiting for really anyway, isn't it? This has to be the money maker.

As long as it looks nothing like an A5, 4 series or C-class coupe. If it does then Alfa as we know it will be dead.

I never said it's terrible looking - Compared to most of the other crap eye-sores alfa have produced it looks half decent, but the only good looking car they ever made was the 4C. There's very little originality in the styling IMO.

This is getting funny. People should check the videos - pictures, like with many Alfas, do not tell the full story. The only thing it has in common with a 3 series is the aerial (which I don't like, I much prefer old style ones like the 159 has) and the distribution of mass in the profile/side view, which is due to technical reasons. Quite simply, from any distance it can't be confused with anything else on the road but another Alfa, whatever people want to say.

It was never gonna be "stunning" or "unexpected", like the 159 was - Alfa paid their adventurous styling at a dear price. While most people like to hammer on the "weight" and stuff, the real problem with the 159 is...aerodynamics. Poor CX due to the extremely elaborate nose give it lower performance and higher fuel consumption than the rivals. I drive one daily and, I can guarantee, at a certain speed it literally hits a brick wall.

Anyway, the whole discussion here and anywhere else reminds me of what happens when long-awaited videogames are relased: no matter how good the game is, most people will complain that it is cr@p, because they spent so much time designing, developing and playing it in their heads that they can't accept the final, real product is different from what they were dreaming about. Everyone had designed his or her own Giulia in their heads, and now they are pissed off it looks different. As simple as that.
