Ordinarily I would recommend the pre ground (single origin) rich java in a brown packet. I've been drinking it both at home and work for the last year or two but the last 3 bags I've gotten have had a bad taste to them. I'm presuming that the last batch has been over-roasted. I'll probably give it another month or so before I try it again but it is good value at 2.49e per 200g.

Can anyone recommend me a good quality brand of coffee?

For the past while my husband has been bringing home beans from work. He's recently switched jobs and we are on our last 1/4 bag  so I'm very interested in this too.

Aldi don't do beans in their regular stock but do them occasionally as a special. I also like the Java ground coffee.

I picked up a bottle of "Ghost Vines' Lodi Zinfandel from California for €7.99.

At this price, great value. Big deep red wine

Just saw in the weekly brochure that they've added two new Indian curry sauces to their Specially Selected range.
    Indian Makhani and Vindaloo.

Nice one. Now I just wish they would bring the chilli con carne one back, that was divine.

Anyone tried either of these yet? Bought two jars of each on Sunday, along with some lamb leg steaks.

Never had Makhani before, so am unsure of what to be expecting.

I bought them today as well. I was looking for them along with the others, but in my Aldi at least, they were hidden away amongst the specials, so I'm not sure they're going to be a regular thing. I must admit I found the reference to Ghost Chilis on the Makhani jar a bit daunting :)

Was that Aldi in Bray? I was up there this morning looking for them and never found them :( You'd think they'd put them in the vicinity of the existing range, wouldn't you...

Yes, in Bray. They were where they put all the food specials, second aisle from the left as you look towards the tills on the right if that makes sense.

Mines bubbling away, should be ready to start eating in next ten minutes or so. Went with chicken in the end up.

I thought the Makhani was "butter chicken" but the mention of Ghost peppers has thrown me now.

According to the label Makhani is a Hindustani word meaning "with butter".

    Ok, so here's my opinion.

I'm someone who likes their curry, and this one (Makhani) is very nice.

Sauce is a velvety, smooth texture, not unlike what you might get from your local takeaway. It's got a fairly decent kick to it, (I'd give it about 6/10 for heat) and can be best described as being kind of sweet but sour.

I added very little to mine, just cooked it as per directions, used chicken fillets diced up, and threw in some frozen garden peas, and a diced spud (I feel the sauce was a little too thin just to suit chicken with no veg)

I had mine with the pilau rice they sell, and good spoonful of lime pickle on the side.

Overall thoughts, not bad at all. Very very tasty, in fact you could possibly have convinced me this was takeaway bought. I'd go so far as to say it maybe one of the nicest shop bought curry sauces I've ever had.

I'd definitely make this a regular purchase if they decide to continue stocking it.

    Solid 8/10 from me

Sticking it on the list for next week. Thanks!

Brilliant, thanks very much for the write-up, I was just about to ask what you thought of it. I really liked their madras but thought the rest of the standard range was a bit meh, so this sounds very promising indeed!

The Orange sports drinks pack of 4 for €1.49 are really nice and taste exactly like lucozade sport.

Can anyone recommend beer/lager available in Aldi. I usually use Cooper's Pale Ale in a chili recipe I make but as I'll be in Aldi for the rest of the ingredients I figured I'd just get something there.

Aldi do a few different pale ales, O'Sheas being the first that springs to mind. It's manufactured by Carlow brewing Company, the same people who do O'Haras, and it tastes pretty similar to O'Haras pale ale (but half of the price)

Coopers is one of my favourite beers, I usually go for the sparkling ale over the pale ale, but could never imagine throwing it into a chilli. Seems much too premium a beer for cooking.

Spaten if they have it, nice light German-style pilsner lager.

The Sainte Etienne might do the job also and is only about a euro a can ... it's a belgian style lager:

It's usually just because it's what I'll have in the house when I'm making the chili.

    Stop :o

I'd like to find an Irish one that I like as much, buy local and all that. I'll try a couple of these Aldi ones and see.

The rye bread is back at last in my local aldi after an absence of maybe 5 years. There are 2 types: wholemeal rye and wholemeal rye with 5% sunflower seeds. €1.29 for 500g, 7 slices. I like both.

Hope it's not just a special buy but I don't see it listed as one.

Spotted that today as well. Got the sunflower seed one, very nice and moist.

Aldi giveth and taketh away, unfortunately. I used to like the tinned herring fillets in various sauces, in particular mustard and tomato. These disappeared from my local Aldi about 6 months ago. Some of the sauces were sweet, can't recall what, and those were all that were available for months before they went. They came in those mixed boxes so I suppose the less popular flavours went unsold and they decided to ditch the line altogether.

With the once off specials I can kinda understand why they find it hard to predict which of the varieties will be the most popular... but - and not just with ALDI - with regular products after the first shipment it should be pretty obvious that instead of an equal split across all varieties it should be more like 50-25-25.
