Worth upgrade from 1080p to 1440p?

Right now I have a HD 7950 which I plan to upgrade. I could either buy something like a R9 290 and just fit in a 1440p monitor or I could buy a Fury air cooled and get a 1440p next year. Or I could buy a 390 and get a IPS 1080p display. Which one would be the best option?
