Sail locker hatch

So, the hatch over the sail locker managed to get itself lost.

What was there was very basic, there want any seals in place; just a fibreglass (or plastic, not sure given all the paint) hatch that was hinged onto the deck. It wasn't flush with the deck, but raised above it.

To replace this, I'm thinking of rebuilding the hatch in marine ply, then coating in with fibreglass?

For the new hatch, I'm assuming I just cut the wood, tack into shape with stainless tacks and then glass? I'm assuming I don't have to sikaflex the joints given they'll be glassed over?

    Cheers,

    E

What make of boat is it? Sometimes the owners associations retain moulds (or have made them) and it's easier to buy it directly from them as its inch perfect.

    Just another option.

I agree with Tabnabs. there is an owners Assoc and a forum - a post there might save you a lot of hassle .

    Posted.

If they say no dice, would a marine ply that has been sikafixed and varnished up do?
Kind of want to get the boat watertight again quickly, but don't want to do a total bodge.

Give accessplastics a call you might be able to get a white sheet of plastic cut to size and glue on the sides or a thermoplastic and get them to bend the sids into it.
If your going with plywood I would coat it in 2-3 coats of epoxy maybe more on cut edges then wash sand and varnish or paint, I don't think paint or varnish will cure over the sikaflex so test it first.

    .

I was thinking about the description. I'm not familiar with the Snap., but are you describing the hatch correctly? Is it a cover for the anchor locker (would not require seals as it would have a drainhole), or a hatch on the cabin top (needs seals) or a locker cover in the cockpit (would have a rubber trim on edges)?

none of the above. Anchor locker is accessed through a little funnel.

There is a moulded ridge (rises about 1.5inches above the deck) that is around the 'hole' that lets you in / out of the sail locker. The hatch sits over this ridge, so no seal needed as the ridge keeps the water out.

Advice from the snappie forum is to make one up out of ply. Thinking of having a window in it, made out of perspex.
