Porterfield with serious questions to answer imo.

Well he scored 17 today - that's an improvement on the 42 total scored in 4 ODIs against Afg recently, average 10.5 - with tailenders outscoring him easily out there :)

I know nothing of the internal politics of Cricket Ireland but I guess there's some reason why he's still opening bat and captain.

    Windies 31/0 after 8

Very expensive first over from Barry McCarthy! Some good tight bowling before that had them tied down a bit.

We'd want a wicket soon enough, otherwise the Windies heading for a big score followed by big pressure. Maybe winning the toss and putting them in wasn't the best idea, justified if you can get early inroads and/or keep the scoring down.

    Getting hammered here

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,499 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

142/0 after 25. Have to fancy 350+ possibly even 400 from here

Ah lads, this is a real hammering, an embarrassment. Had to go out for a while to return and see two centuries for their openers. Can Porters not come up with a single strategy to get a wicket after putting them in? Could be looking at a huge loss here.

Indeed we could. Although the Clontarf track is almost always a batsman friendly one, so maybe we'll be able to get a decent score.

That said, the last 10 overs of the WIndies innings may well be carnage. :(

EDIT: I'm a bit surprised that the two openers haven't been asked to retire to give some of the others a chance to bat.

In that case, if we can't keep the score down, why not bat first. As it is, we're going to be under scoring pressure from the first ball and we all know where that leads..

Possibly on the basis that if there was any moisture in the wicket it would have been at 10.45 this morning, allied to the fact that the WIndies batsmen mightn't have been used to Irish conditions.

That said, while putting them in in Malahide would have been a reasonable option, in Clontarf it was a big gamble.

EDIT 73 runs scored in the last 5 overs!

Remarkable consistent scoring between Windies openers. Four overs left, would they dream of double centuries each and set the record to end all records!

World record ODI opening partnership of 365, but the collapse has now started!

    365/0

    365/1

    369/1

    369/2

13 balls left - can we bowl them out?

West Indies have crumbled. Seriously though, 170 & 179 for Hope and Campbell, can you declare in an ODI?

Can we keep them under 400 might be a better question ;)

So our lads after chasing their tails for the last four hours, now have to face four nicely rested quickies, whilst chasing 8 runs an over. Hmm.

    An embarrassment.
Overweight, over the hill pub team against a mediocre cricket side.
Irish cricket needs a serious cull, with the likes of O'Brien, porterfield and others ditched for the young up and coming talent. There has to be an alternative to this out of date bunch.

This has been a proper hammering.....

It's not so easy when the young guys fails too though, Tucker now with an duck to go with his 7 from the last game

Might be better to go backwards for a while in order to go forwards? You get the sense there's too much loyalty at play. Should be no room for sentimentality in international sport.

Yeah, I guess you could even make the argument we wont be going much further backwards than we are at the moment.. might as well be some new young guy averaging 10 as Porterfield anyway

Balbirnie hit on the helmet by a Gabriel thunderbolt, so sensibly retires hurt on 28*.

Middle order is showing a bit of application and saving our blushes, well done to K'OB.

So 130 from 180 comes from one partnership, 15 overs unused and a few if those dismissals sound pretty shocking

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,732 ✭✭✭BarryD2

Porters reported on ESPN as saying after the game "Credit to the two lads. Once they got the partnership going, this can become a very quick-scoring ground. It's going to be a learning curve for the bowlers. You're playing against really good players. As long as you learn from that, that's all you can ask for."

So basically blaming our bowlers... sounds like a cheap shot to me and deflecting from his own responsibility. Maybe he said more?

Good win for Bangladesh today after losing the warm up to our b-team. 8 wicket win and restricted Windies to around 60 runs off the last 10 overs.

I wonder can Simi be brought back already since he made 91 and took a few wickets in the warm-up game?
