Had Yoshida in a nicely balanced team but don't have the funds to upgrade to another Southampton defender now he's going to be dropped.

Already have NOR, LEI, SUN and BOU as 4 of my 6 remaining Goalkeepers and Defenders so I might have to have a rethink.

Also = at least 50 points less that you'll have to make up with those $$$

Fabregas is a huge waste of money unless he gets the number 10 role long term, he had some very lucky assists last year and was a disaster for the second half of the season, I know we'll have apologists who say that he always kicks ass in the first half of every season but I'm never paying 9m for a defensive midfielder.

A huge waste of money? Sorry but how can you possibly say he is a defensive midfielder? Because he's in a "defensive" position on the sky sports graphic before a match. He got 19 assists last year. Not bad for a defensive midfielder I would have thought. Genuinely puzzled by this post

I'm only half serious really, I've been at this for a while now. It is my contention that a large number of those assists were quite lucky and that figure is unsustainable season on season. Even then he finished how many points below Hazard last year??
Have a look at his average position and his touches in the box in comparison to other premium midfielders (shots as well I'd say)

I do agree with this opinion. But still it was crazy.

for 2.5 less than Hazard, i can see the appeal in Fab. much depends on how you use the extra cash elsewhere! Haz did finish comfortably ahead of Fab points-wise last season, though Haz did play almost 500 mins more..

Haz more explosive, but Fab a steady Eddie, especially with the assists. There's a good argument for both, Haz has the advantage of being genuine captain material, but again much depends on what other options you have in your squad, for example the 2.5 saved by having Fab might upgrade you JRod to another genuine captain option in Kane

I think anybody who'd choose to spend 9m on Fabregas this year will be disappointed and will move him on quickly enough (unless Chelsea go into a more free scoring mode), it's just my opinion obviously but it's deeply held and absolutely nothing anyone will say can change my mind:o:pac:

Haha. Honestly i'd fancy both to score well, it'd be a brave man betting against Hazard being the top points-scoring mid again. Though on the topic of Fab's playing position, he's often found further up the field than your average centre mid - Matic being the one more often to mop up defensively. How's your squad looking currently Swiper?

Autopick and if I'm being honest I haven't even thought about it, just flicking through the threads here keeping abreast of things, haven't opened the Rate My Team thread yet, that's when I'll get serious.
I won't have Fabregas anyway, you can be sure of that, for much of last season I felt as if my reputation was on the line every time he played.:P

    *sigh*

costa with a dodgy hammy already. so hard not to have him though, you just know he'll be cleared 1 minute after the deadline and go on and score a hat trick.

    Swiper don't ever change! :D

I know you were really only throwing out bait with the defensive midfielder line (and caught a fish at that) and i know you may even be right about 30 points more for Haz over a season. You may even have a point about sone of Fabs assists being 'soft'. But i don't see anyone saying Fab is preferable to Haz over the full season. In the opening gameweeks, with budgets very tight, i think its a very valid calculated risk to hope Fab won't lose to Haz by a huge amount of points over the first 4 or 5 weeks, while freeing up 2.5m to allow tried and tested fpl players in other positions ratherthan taking risky punts, as well as accomodating Aguero v Watford. Unless Hazard goes really on the rampage while Fab blanks theres a good chance of at least breaking even.

I'm a Hazard fan and will be switching as soon as i see where the value 4th mid and third strikers are.

But don't let me spoil your fun! :) It'll make for good slagging round here over the first few weeks.

I feel stupid now because I thought all along that you were one of the more on the ball posters around here, obviously I was wrong.:o

I hadn't even looked at the fixtures, Chelsea have a tough first six, I could well go without a Chelsea midfielder until we know who is on pens, has there been any indication pre season whether or not Hazard will still be on them?

Good old reliable Andre Wisdom off to Norwich for the season at £4.5.

There's no reason to think Haz is off them. Presumably Costa on the final day was just to get to 20 league goals

Sure Chelsea don't get many penalty so wouldn't worry too much. I think cesc is a mush for the first few weeks. He always starts off great till Christmas then fades.

I hear what you are saying, his record in the first half of last season is a bit of an oddity but he doesn't have to repeat the same feat this season to justify inclusion.

If he repeats something similar to what he did at the start of the previous couple of seasons before that then it will be worth it.

Any love for Pelle out there?
I know he got a bad reputation here after his awful run of form last year, but I'm now considering him.
Nice fixtures, good pre-season form, and with Costa doubtful, there is a short supply of strikers available.

    Kane/Benteke/Giroud all better options imo

He's likely to be rotated with JRod and the new signing due to Europa

inter Milan being linked with Gael Clichy. . .now that would make kolorov mighty tempting !

Kane scored a cracker last night against the MLS all stars who had Dempsey, Kaka and David Villa up front. Not to shabby eh.

Kyle Walker was up to his old tricks last night (gave away needless handball for a penalty ) ... hopefully Trippier starts ahead of him cone Aug 8th

I had a terrible (and frankly slightly exciting) thought last night in bed after yesterdays exchange about Fabregas. As a haven't looked at anybody's draft teams yet in the RMT thread it occurred to me that many of the top brains in this parish must have him in their teams, I honestly assumed that he wouldn't feature much but people must be making very strong claims for his inclusion, this could be big but I won't have my head turned.

Would have been a great lineup in 2007
