I expect there wil be more of the same from SKY...setting a blistering pace and trying to wear out Van Garderen & Bardet

Could you make this into a specific thread for the stage? The spoilers kind of spoil it for me otherwise!

Fairly lumpy stage with a category 3 finish. Hopfuly it'll be a good day.

What I've seen of the race has been with ITV. Who's been doing ES commentary - assuming they've been showing it?

Seemingly Phil Deignan is the only other Sky rider along with Chris Froome in the yellow jersey group. No idea where Nico is.
I think Dan Martin is in the yellow jersey group.

Boahanni is still there so I'd hope Dan is too!

Edit: Dan and Talanski both there. Deignan at the front now. Van Garderen the only bmc rider in the group behind.

I wouldn't fancy descending in that rain

This won't do Deignans chances of making the tour team any harm.

Deignans dropped after TVG went off

What the fupp are the Movistar lads and Lotto-Soudal guy doing at the front of the yellow jersey group :confused:

Thies Benoot is a special special talent. He did well in the cobbled classics and now hanging in there in the mountains.

Stupid commentary by Carlton on Eurosport. As soon as Nibali attacked, Carlton was saying that Nibali had the stage win in the bag etc. The thought never occurred to him that Rui Costa, Valverde or Gallopin could catch him.

That was great. Must be mentally totally flummoxing for Froome to see that kind of unscripted racing from GC guys. He's obviously aggressive in his way of charging up final climbs after Sky lead it out but annoys me to see him even on a stage like that so reluctant to do any work before the one big effort at the death - at all costs hoping other riders will do the dirty work for him. For example, TVG was by comparison willing to get stuck in & put his own efforts out there a fair few km's out.

Very encouraging from Dan, whilst depressing I'd have thought for Talansky & his general GC hopes.

Did anyone on planet earth envisage Nibali in yellow after today's stage?

Anybody been watching the ITV4 evening highlights?

It it just me, or is David Miller utterly dung at commentating?

He's so hard to follow, and when you can make out what he's saying, it's crap. His plummy commentary is always delivered right on cue to totally distract from the action.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

He can be informative in general tactics but the thing is it can be like listening to a boring lecture going on & on after a while. One of the great things about Kelly is he obviously doesn't consider the point of the race being to talk endlessly about it - there's space for the viewer to watch 'at his own pace' so to speak. With this iTV commentary there's no such space. Every inch or millisecond of coverage is filled with chatter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,518 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

A massive chapeau to Nacer Bouhanni.

He finished the stage in 43rd place, only 14'04" behind Rui Costa, and a big 22'21" ahead of the grupetto that contained over 90 riders, including Zubledia, Roche, Kennaugh, Scarponi, Rolland, and Mollema.

The racing today was great but I fear Froome & SKY cannot handle this at all
The rain , the descents, the need for leaders to bridge gaps
They go all out chasing and end up with blown riders and then leader cannot control race
Contador & Nibali must feel comforted when they see Froome beaten by John Gadret

Great ride by Dan Martin...he is a tough cookie and is more deserving of GC lead than Talansky in this year's Tour imo with so little TT time

Phil Deignan good also....helps I suppose coming from Donegal

Everytime there is rain or snow Nico Roche like SKY seems to fall off a precipice

The Sky modus of winning on the numbers augmented by comfy pillows and duvets just doesn't seem to cut it anymore.

I think the golden window for grand tour success that existed for Sky in the period between 2011-2013 has firmly shut.

I wouldn't go that far...usually no rain in July

Great stage today. Is Roche in any danger of doing himself out of a Tour spot?

Hard to know .....other SKY doms weren't great either so he wan't the only one....

Although he is their lead climber dom in this race or at least I think he is supposed to be..

Maybe he did the lion's share of the chase in the 1st 2 hours as it was on mountainous terraine ??

I think SKY need to look at their tactics and training...they need provincial plans for when things go awry ...and some better tacticians

Looks like the whole marginal gains thing isn't working out anymore for sky.

No, he's the road captain and will definitely be there. Deignan is doing his chances no harm at all, another solid ride today follow his excellent team TT

The sky tactics seem to be blast up the climb and launch Froome, but it's not working. They can't handle the off the cuff, attacking GC racing we saw today. I'd be bringing Porte to the tour and try keep him there or there abouts on the GC, they desperately need a plan B.

have the other teams coped onto to skys tactics and are now blowing up skys tactics by fast paces and attacks? Dont remember any other team putting pressure on them in this way during the 12 & 13 TDF where they seemed to control the race and pace

Garmin in 2013 Tour stage won by Dan Martin ...after the day SKY dominated in the mountains

Contador (with Kreuziger) was very aggressive and attacking in the 2013 tour - sky raced by numbers / watts and were able to control him.

Though he was pretty easy to control seeing as he was well off-form. He had the aggression but not the legs to go with it.
