Morrissey - "Obama doesn't appear to support black people"

Morrissey has given an interview in which he criticised Barack Obama's behaviour over recent conflicts between the police and black Americans.
Obama has mystified me because he doesn’t appear to support black people when they need it most… Ferguson being an obvious example. If Michael Brown had instead been one of Obama’s daughters, I don’t think Obama would be insisting that the nation support the so-called security forces! How can they be called security forces if they make the people feel insecure? Obama seems to be white inside. There is an obvious racial division in America and it’s exploding and Obama doesn’t ever support the innocent black people who are murdered by white police officers who are never held accountable. You would expect him to be more understanding of what it means to be black. But so far, he hasn’t been. There’s no point in continually saying that we must support the police when it is obvious to the entire world that the police in America are out of control.
Already he seems to have pissed a few people off.

If Barrack Obama was a champion of the rights of minorities he would never have been allowed to become President.

He does kinda have a point though. Racism in America is so historical and so systemic. It might no be so blatantly in your face as signs saying 'No Blacks, No Dogs (No Irish)' but it is still intrinsically built into the very fabric of American society.

    Now?

Morrissey has faced accusations of racism for years, from waving Union Jacks with skinheads on stage to calling the Chinese a "subspecies".

The fruit cake American religious right already believe: he is about to invade Texas, is Muslim, was born in Africa, is a Communist and is the anti-Christ. He is a fairly conservative President by global standards (people also seem to forget that he is half white) but if he actually showed any solidarity with black Americans on the police shooting issue they would have a field day with their half baked, right wing conspiracy theories.

What a stupid statement. As if a president who happens to be black must always look out for his "own kind". Obama's job is to address the issues of all Americans, regardless of their race.

What does it matter what an British pop artist thinks of a foreign leader and his policies, does it really warrant a thread ?

I wonder what Paul McCartney thinks of Angela Merkel, or One Direction thinks of Enda ?

Actually, I don't really care, and I'm sure noone else does either, and the same with Morrisey's opinion on foreign politics.

Was it really worth starting a thread for ?

yea but that's not the ticket he rode in on. he played the black card big time when he campaigned for election the first time.

He's a public figure vocalising about a relevant issue in one of the largest countries in the world.also I think he's absolutely right.i think Obama is a worthless president with no nerve. He's populist like any other politician which is particularly galling in his case since his campaign focused on change and hope. Black Americans are in dire straights from what I can see with little or no support and very little real role models. The odds are very much stacked against them.

Can't see much racist about what he said myself.

He comes out with some mad stuff from time to time - always has - but at least at least he can articulate an opinion, unlike most of the dreary fcukwits that pass for pop stars these days.

What you see is an underclass. Most of the rest of black America, like most Americans , belong to the dominant world economy and culture.

No. And certain black Americans in the army, not just him, contribute to that.

"Obama seems to be white inside"

People need to realise that not all black people are from the ghetto. And this does not equate to being 'white inside'.

this is the typical SJW territory

rich man morrissey pontificating about another demographic that he is not part of and never will be. perceiving problems and dishing out accusations on behalf of others.

Actually morrissey could well be king of the SJWs given his pontificating in the past.

poor bono isn't extreme enough to be a SJW so he is just a bore.

No, I think a good "SJW" would hold that white people like Morrissey shouldn't speak on behalf of minorities and dictate what's good for them.

I loathed the notion of Obama as president he had all the hallmarks of left wing idiocy, Chicago Democrat (byword for corrupt) who perfered student politics and never had a real job (A darker shade of Gilmore) but if he's just come out at the beginning and said that "actually, I'm just a moderate Republican" then I'd I've backed him.
Obama missed an opportunity by running for the wrong party, he could have united the Republicans by giving them a black conservative candidate.

Morrissey really gets far too much attention. He’s a silly middle-aged bore. His autobiography was one of the most sanctimonious and petty bits of drivel I’ve ever had the misfortune to read.

Even his lyrics with The Smiths get far too much praise. Wow, he was a depressed and self-absorbed teenager in the 70’s in England. He had no clothes to wear. He felt awkward. We get it. It’s like he read a few kitchen-sink plays and based his career as a perpetual sulky man-child on it.

The bizarre hero worship he gets from some people is utterly cringe-inducing.

Always thought it sounded like a typically Neil Tennant lyric myself.

If Michael Brown had been one of Obama's daughters then I'm pretty sure Barack would have been looking for a DNA test, quick sharp, not to mention a medic's opinion on why the hell his daughter had a penis.

Favouite Obama moment for me so far is when he called Mr Kardashian a jackass.

    Ah. Maybe so.

I like New Order and Electronic myself, but as Sumner had such a slight, weak voice he possibly shouldn't have aimed "getting away with it" lyrics at anyone!

Stephen Morris on drums was some musician though. Machine like. One of the best drummers ever.

Not seeing what's so controversial about it tbh. Morrissey (much as I adore The Smiths and some of his solo output) has been known to say far more inflammatory stuff. I think it's a pretty left-wing-populist thing to say tbh. Something Stephen Patrick isn't usually known for.

Obama has done one great thing Obamacare. NOW WAIT HEAR ME OUT OK!!!

It's one of the most effective culture changes in the states. I think on the same level as Thatcher changed culture in the UK only in the opposite direction.

I know it's compulsory insurance not universal healthcare through taxation. But finally in the US people are compelled to buy healthcare. And now there is the general idea that everyone SHOULD have and MUST have healthcare and health insurance. THAT is a HUGE culture shift it's why the right HATE Obama so much.

I agree he did not use his presidency to aid minorities as much as he could have. But can you imagine what the republican party would have done????

As the Sparks said 'LIGHTEN UP MORRISSEY'. Listen to that song! And Sparks in general!

And also putting the onus on OBAMA to support black people sort of lets the rest of the establishment off the hook. The entire establishment should be held to account!

But can you imagine what the republican party would have done????

They'd have probably got involved in a couple of legally dubious military misadventures, expanded the surveillance and security state in the US, sucked up to Wall Street and done their bidding without question... actually which party is Obama in again?!
