Is there an on-line resource that can help me understand what would be available to me in the event I had to take some months off work due to long term illness?
I suppose I am trying to understand how long I would stay on full salary from my employer.. and what benefits I could be entitled to and for how long.
    Thanks!

More than lightly you would get most of that info on your companies polices on sick pay.

It depends on your employment contract: start looking there, and in your company's HR policies.

If you're not entitled to anything that way, the next thing to Google is "Illness Benefit" (I think - report this post if you want the thread moved over to State Benefits where they'll know better.)

Work contract should of course be the first port of call, will get on that. Thanks.

The sick pay scheme is rarely on a work contract, ask your HR person for the companies policy on sick pay, normally they pay full pay for 6months and deduct the payments you get from Dept of social welfare.
After six months you're on illness benefits only, no pay from work.

Edit....if they have a sick pay scheme.... as said here, they don't have to pay you or provide a scheme

Your employer isn't required to pay you anything while on sick-leave. They may choose to, which is where your contract/terms of employment come in, but they're not breaking any laws if they don't offer it (Source).

In terms of state suppport, you'd be looking at Illness Benefit
