Cream - which and how?

Fairly new to DE shaving but never changing back to cartridges again. I've been using Taylor soap but sometimes very hard to get a decent lather due to hard water so going to get cream for my next order. Should I get cream in a bowl or tube? Or is there any difference?

Considering this one or one of these.

Regarding using the cream how exactly is it different? Currently after soaking the brush I rub it in the soap (Taylor soap in it's own bowl). Then lather on the face as I don't have a proper shaving bowl. With tube cream do I just squeeze some on to the brush and lather up in a bowl (or my hand) and go from there? Or with a bowl of cream swipe some on to the brush and then use a bowl to lather? I'm not averse to buying a bowl or mug if needed - this one looks good.

I've a Black Silvertip Special brush from shaving.ie if that makes any difference.

    TIA

    O/

Get the cream in a bowl it's better value. The tubes are if you travel and need to be under the 100ml rule. You can put the cream on the brush or in the bowl it doesn't' really make a difference. Just experiment and see what works best for you. After a year and half I find face lather works for me. But, I prefer soaps over creams.
You don't really need buy a proper shaving bowl any cheap bowl will do the job. I found an old salsa bowl we weren't using and it worked out great.

Thanks for that. I was up around Stephen's Green at lunch time so I picked up a bowl of Taylor Sandalwood while I was passing. I'll give it a try tonight.

Taylors have great creams and are good value. It you want to take it up notch and treat yourself, then I'd recommend Catie's Bubbles French style Soaps(they're more like a cream/soap and very easy to lather up)

"Le Piment de la Vie" is awesome

I have the Taylors unscented, which I presume is the same base as their other creams but with no fragrance added. I find it great, lathers up very easily and gives great protection during the shave. I also tried the green Proraso which I actually find a bit better than the Taylors and it's about half the price so you could look into that also.

For lathering, I soak the brush while I'm in the shower. Then I squeeze out most of the water and brush it in circular motions across the tub of cream for about 30 seconds then start lathering on the face. If it'd too dry and pasty dip the tip of the brush in water and resume lathering.
