I must say, I find the UFC HWs rarely fit the bill for high left athletes. Sloppy and gassed at the best of times.
Cain is truely the exception though, its a pleasure to watch him tear it up.

Werdum by flying omoplata to claim the title before Andrei gets his shot and reclaims the belt via decapitation of the hair and face.

I predict Pendred will lose and be cut from the UFC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 393 ✭✭Petermc83

Pendred is 3-0 with the UFC so far... so losing 1 will not get him cut...

Granted...he isnt the best fighter in the world but a 3-1 record wont get him cut..

They only usually cut guys who lose 3/4 in a row.. or if you perform in alot of boring fights ( Jon Fitch).

At Least Pendreds fights are exciting... he always looks like he will be knocked out..but survives!

Citing Pendred's 3-0 UFC record as a sign of his talent is like saying Djiimi Traore is up there with the greats of football because he has a Champions League medal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,425 ✭✭✭Beersmith

But why not keep him he keeps coming up with the W and surely if anyone is a decent striker they should KO him if everyone is so right about his stand up being terrible. His first ufc fight was very exciting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

That fight WAS exciting and i'm not saying he shouldn't be in the UFC. But he's only there because the roster is so wide and expansive these days. He will never crack the Top 10. They put on a lot of shows so there are a lot of fighters to fill the cards.

He's a nice guy and I support him 100% but his record flatters him.

Weak main card compared to the last ppv. It'll be a chore to stay up to catch the main event. It will be interesting to see where Cain is at after a long period of inactivity though.

Anyone know anything about Pendred's opponent?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,870 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

    Torres should win easily.
    Good test for gastelum
Hopefully Pendred gas spent the last few months living in a boxing gym and price is all wrong.
    Cain win round 3

If is Werdum is to win he has to get a finish. He won't beat Cain over 5 rounds.

You can say a lot of this about Pendred. But his fights generate a lot more discussion than most bouts.

He's a tko machine. Has finished nearly all of his fights , opposition has been questionable but still - an impressive record nonetheless. Pendred will have to grind out another decision victory if he is to get to 4-0, I'd be surprised if he gets to that point.

Have you seen many of his fight or are you just going off his record?

15-1 with 15 finishes is good no matter what way you slice it. But it's not so impressive reading between the lines.
The majority of his fights took last prior to 2010. Virtually all of his fights have been unknown fighters, in Mexico. The only fighter of note is Sam Alvey, who was his only loss.

My gut says he isn't as good as he record suggests. But neither is Cathal.

I'm gonna review his last night before punting this one.

Cathal by decision I think lads. JK has gone with a 2nd round guillotine. I'm slightly more pessimistic :D

Yes, I can see Cathal losing by guillotine:)

Can't wait to see Cejudo, Olympic gold medallist wrestler who doesn't use his wrestling because he's too busy beating the shít out of people with his hands. A few more fights and he's a legitimate challenge to DJ

Sean Spencer as special guest referee for Cathal's fight?

    Make it so!

Cathal will be on the MMA Hour at about 8:25pm this evening to talk about this weekends fight

It's crazy to think that since Cain beat Brock for the title in 2010 he has literally only fought Big Foot and Junior repeatably.

Werdum will be a huge test for him as I think he's more well rounded than any of the Heavyweights (bar Cain)

But.... My money is still on Cain. The chap is a machine

I can see this being very one sided.

Werdum is too slow for Cain and will not be able to deal with the pace, gas tank and wrestling of Cain.

Ring rust might be a factor , but if Cain is fully healed up and had a good camp I don't think it will be much of an issue.

The only areas Werdum will have success would be striking at a distance and catching a submission on the ground. Cain will close the distance and is aware enough and has good enough top control to avoid major submission attempts.

I would have said Fedor has good enough top control to avoid major submission attempts too in fairness... Werdum is a wizard, and he doesn't mind getting hit on the bottom to set up sub attempts

I really dont agree, he subbed Fedor, armbarred big nog, kimura'd Overeem, he's been able to succesfully use deep half guard against UFC heavyweights, people are terrified to even go near his guard

I've a feeling that Cathal is going to put in a great performance this weekend, He seems to be in a good frame of mind, Had a good training camp at altitude and has a point to prove.

I never thought Werdum brought his best bjj skills to the cage, even Fedor fell into that submission.I don't think he has a chance of subbing Cain.

He fell into it twice. He escaped the original attempt if I remember correctly, but instead of completing the escape to the side he went right back into the middle and Werdum locked it up again.

The Fedor outside of Pride was different, he was a shadow of his Pride self, in Afflication he beat Tim Sylvia and was getting picked apart by Arlovski until that terrible flying knee attempt. In Strikeforce he went 1-3, beating Brent Rodgers and loosing to Werdum, a undersized Henderson and Bigfoot. He was at the end of his career and in my opinion he visibly moved differently. He was slower and sloppier. I think there is good reason why he never signed for the UFC as he did not think he could compete at the highest level any more.

As much as it was a great win, you have to put it into context taking in account the fights that followed.

Just over 4 and a half years ago.

I posted this in the Belator thread but I suppose it's relevant to conversation.

Legitimately thought that was an Action Man with Ken Shamrock's face photoshopped on to it.

Fun card, Going to miss the majority of it due to work but I'll get to see the last 3 or 4 fights anyway hopefully. Intrigued by the main event. I do give Werdum more of a chance then many on here but if he is too win I think it'll have to be inside the first couple of rounds as Cain will eventually just beat him up. Werdum has really really improved his stand up though so it'll be interesting to see can he hang with Cain and his huge output ratio. I'll take Cain via UD.

Really excited for the Co-Main, The Countdown show did a good job of showing the story behind the fight and how its 5 years in the making. I think Gil will get the finish, I still think he's a major player at 155 and a win should get him a title eliminator fight against Khabib. This should be a great scrap though. Eddie has already said Gil won't stand and trade with him, Gil said he will, but Melendez also wins this fight in the clinch.

Kelvin Gastelum moving up to Middleweight will be interesting. He looks like he should have been putting more guys away at Welterweight, I wonder how much the weight cut affected him.

Henry Cejudo is a great prospect too. Chico Camus is no match for him, would have rather have seen him against a top 10 guy. Hopefully the UFC don't put him up against DJ for a while yet.

Hoping Pendred gets the win too, and I think he will. He seems hell-bent on proving a point in this one and lets hope we see improvements in his stand up but he needs to take this straight to the ground.

Gastelum's extremely talented. A very skilled fighter, especially for his age. He is being forced up to MW as he has missed weight too many times. He likes his food too much and he carries around way too much fat.

Marquart is a big MW, but well past his prime, I see Gastelum taking an easy win. Then he'll be right baxk to WW his next fight.

We will see but again he is fighting a low level fighter and will probably get rocked at some stage.

Ah jasus, so if he loses then he is finally shown up, if he wins it was an easy opponent!

Doest this guy have a 15-1 so who knows how good he actually is!

Werdum is dangerous. His BJJ is outstanding and his stand up has improved dramatically (who would of thought he would KO Mark Hunt). In saying that, Cain's constant pressure will be too much for any heavyweight and I see cain by stoppage in the third.

Alvarez and Melendez is a real grudge match. I think it could be an all out war if Gilbert stands up with Eddie. I am hoping for a Melendez win.

Looking forward to seeing Henry Cejudo again. Should win easy enough going off his recent displays. Really hope he fufills his potential and becomes a real contender. Lord knows the flyweight division needs it.

Has Alvarez won since he joined the UFC? If anyone can submit Cain it's going to be Werdum, but Cain is an animal with that pressure. Really interesting fight.

He's only fought once. He lost a decision to Cowboy Cerrone.

Really looking forward to seeing him again. The guy is a beast!

I thought he was 0-2 or even 0-3 in the UFC! Hah! He always comes across well when I see him in interviews etc, but I think I have to route for Melendez ever since he gave us his fight against Sanchez.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Da.kid

MrStuffins is right, only one fight. He had Cowboy in trouble in the clinch in the first round if I remember correctly. Alvarez is so exiting to watch, loves standing and trading.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,455 ✭✭✭weemcd

Torn in the main. Only I've got serious man love for Cain I'd be taking Werdum at those odds. Werdum imo has the most underrated striking in MMA, he looks to be at the top of his game and is a beast physically. As for Cain we all know by now exactly what he can do, the problem here is we don't know what he can't do due to surgeries, injuries and that long layoff. Very intriguing fight, but no means a gimme. I believe Werdum can win by sub or decision, I hope I am embarrassingly wrong though an Cain comes out and mauls him in that beautiful style of destruction he possess.

Nice card all round, would fancy Melendez to win in a FOTN barn burner.

Melandez v Alvarez to be FotN
Cain to get a PofN bonus

Controversial opinion: Cathal Pendred will win 2 rounds in a close fight, but lose a 29-28 Mexican decision

Agree - i think Cathal will have to be dominant every round or get a finish to win.
Its inevitable hes gonna be KO'd soon , think this could be it. Hopefully not.

Have a sneeky feeling Werdum gets a sly armbar like against Fedor.
If not its gonna be a pounding from Cain.
