We like to think that buying a car is a rational process, be it new or secondhand.
We assess what we like , be it styling , performance, handling, reliability , image, practicality , economy etc. and find the best we can to suit our budget.

But some decisions are less rational.
For instance the Hyundai Santa Fe is a highly regarded SUV and there are zillions of them around.
I maybe slightly OCD, but I could NEVER live with the offset rear number plate which is necessary due to the position of the handle.
    Any more ?

I agree with that completely. Seen friends and family have horrendous problems with them.

Especially hate that c4 cactus. Cant recall seeing a worse looking car.

Couldn't agree more OP. Pay 40 odd k for a car with a number plate that's off center.. Also them Cactus things have quarterlies as rear windows:eek:
    What's that all about

Wouldn't buy a car with the word 'eco' or any kind of 'eco' button in it. It could be a V12 turf burner on straight pipes and id still shudder to think that it had an economy mode, thats for washing machines and I'm still not comfortable with that.

also a car with any aftermarket accessory that came as a factory option instead. e.g :

    NO, just NO

two tone leather on seats, unless its something that works really well (blue leather on the centre of black m5 seats) its going to 9 times out of 10 piss me off.

uneven steering wheel buttons too, the LR discovery 3 :

Is the S on the steering wheel in SEATs still excessively big, that used to put me off.

I think the concept of a 3 door car got lost in translation in the Hyundai design centre :):D

Is that not all or nearly all new cars these days unless its added in as an extra?

I've realised above all else, any car where I cannot comfortably press the brake and accelerator at the same time doesn't be long in the driveway.

Seat belt beeping. I can drive into a wall or jump out of the ****in thing on the motorway, but not allowed to sit in it for 1 second without an alarm to drive me nuts.

It drives me nuts too. I always thought they were designed for the small square jap import type plate.

Asymmetry seems to be the real villain of this piece which is completely understandable.

Mettalic/gold trim around the windows like on the mid-00s VW Passats and few other models of car around that time is very off-putting for me. Feels very tacky.

Similarly, any kind of added panelling like the aforementioned Citroen Cactus.

Real wheel drive sports cars without an LSD.

Anything American, they just don't know how to make a good looking car.

Poorly fitting floor mats that slide around.

Yes , I think that's the case and American plates too.
Surprised people don't take their chances with undersized plates to get it central, and hope any Guards following have some asthetic consideration ...

I would never buy a car with the indicator stalk on the left, absolute rubbish trying to get used to that.

I hadn't considered that, but god I hate that when switching cars. It just feels wrong.

I don't think ive ever owned a car with it on the right. Its way better on the left, you can indicate and still keep your arm leaned out the window.

Not all but it's a good indication if they cut that corner there is a lot more corners that have been cut.

I don't care how many teachers, reps, priests, hse middle management types drive a particular type of car.... If I start seeing that every skanger I see is also driving the same car, then it's a skanger car. Even without the "yo dawg I heard you like chrome" additions.

I've never had a car with my home county reg on it ever.

My brother has a KK reg and I won't lie....it bothers me. Actually no one in my family has a home county reg anymore since the brother bought a new car. Two Cork, one Tipp North, one Kerry and one Kilkenny :(

@snipey. That reminds me of my fathers friend in Dublin who registered a brand new anniversary edition Harley (04 I think) to my sisters house in County Limerick because his initials are LK :)

Little things that you become used to, quick clear windscreen, beeping of parking sensors, touch the indicator, and it'll flash 3 times - handy for overtaking/pulling out briefly.

The adjustable intermittent sweep for wipers is another nice feature. None of these would be deal breakers on their own, but are nice to have.

I've ranted about reg plates before and I was told I was strange. I like G MO SO, and DL strangely, looks well on a plate. Any of the W's look bad, along with TN and TS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,065 ✭✭✭✭Odyssey 2005

TS,TN are a thing of yesteryear now. OY would turn me off though.

Any cars with a KY reg plate. Every time I see one, I have an image of a 250 lb redneck prisoner called "Bubba" in a US Supermax jail excitedly unscrewing a tub of KY Jelly while his latest cellmate is being escorted into his cell.

Suits me grand actually as I'm left handed anyway :) add in an auto gearbox and I have plenty of time to work on my Trucker's Tan :p

    But also..
    - anything French or Micra-like *shudder*
    - any SUV type car
    - anything with a base spec. I like my toys
    - anything less than 2.0. I do a lot of motorway driving
    - anything manual or with a crap auto box. I love my big DSG/Tiptronic autos and could never go back at this stage

    New essentials for me..
    - xenon lights.. Soo much better
    - parking sensors.. I like my big saloons
    - auto lights and wipers are handy

    Would be nice next time..
    - factory Bluetooth
    - sunroof. The first A6 I bought had it and it was kinda nice :)
    - heated seats. They're electric and have memory function but no heating surprisingly
    - A D-reg. I know it's stupid but the non-D on mine now is the one thing that I think takes away from the car :p I could live with a CN plate (probably because I lived up that way for a few years) but not a C, DL, or any other 'country' plate
