I will try 10, so far it sounds a good one. I like a clean install reformat and install so I hope when the win 10 files are downloaded I can put them on a bootable usb, don't fancy upgrading.

Dunno......I'm happy enough with Linux Mint 17. ..... especially when I get called by someone from "the windows" who tries to tell me my system is informing them that I have a virus.

I'm looking forward to it. Same OS on my xbox, phone and computer.

There's rumours that they'e building compatability for ios and android apps into it for phones.

Windows 10 seems very tablet-y. Not sure I'll be going there. Happy with windows 7.

What happens when the year is up?

You will still have it. The upgrade version is available free for a year. After that you pay.

I actually find it far from tablet-y I been using it on one of my computers since the first build and I find it alot better then windows 8 which was built for tablets Imo, it has all the best features from 7 combined with windows 8 which you can switch between and it runs super fast and smooth. I'll be upgrading all my machines next month when its available.

yes I will dual boot for awhile and give it a few patches before moving over

Windows 8 with classic start menu is rock solid, a really good OS

Imo one of the best MS ever released

Lazy typing today on my part. What I mean is, is everytime I get a new operating system, I always format the hard-drive and do a clean install of the new operating system instead of upgrading over the older operating system.

A nice and clean install. Also I like to have the new windows 10 operating system on a usb stick as well.

Not really, Visual Studio, the Windows development environment will support re-using iOS and Android code in native Windows 10 apps. It's not, and will never be a drop in emulation or something like that.

That said, come fall most people will literally not need to have a PC anymore. You can just plug in the Phone (which runs Windows 10), add keyboard and mouse and you have a true dual screen desktop environment.

Anyone interested should watch the Build keynote and the new video released yesterday..

You have to pay for the upgrade if you have not upgraded by then, if you have nothing happens.

I use Linux for work/browsing at home. Is there even a decent DAW for Linux?

I've been using it since the Technical Preview began. It boils down to Windows 8.2 for the most part with the Metro nonsense consigned to an extension of the start menu or windowed apps.
It's still as ugly as 8, if not more so, with the nasty colours, awkward icons and flatness for the sake of it rather than usability.

On the Start menu, I don't see the obsession with it. An earlier build introduced a fully resizable version which is probably the most innovative thing Microsoft have done in years. Of course it was soon killed off in favour of the tiles for some kinda resizable thing in the current stable build.

They added a bunch of settings to a new Settings area and kept the Control Panel - so good looking finding out where to change what.

On the plus side they've caught up with the last decade and added support for multiple desktops and poked the command prompt to this side of the millennium. You can now right click on start to open a list of Administrative tools like Device Manager and Disk Management. This is much better than the nebulous descriptions offered by search results, rather than the actual application name, or painfully navigating ten menus deep for them.

It's also pretty quick and games run well on it, which is all I use Windows for nowadays anyway.

Bitwig is about it really.. it's OK. Reaper runs fairly stable in Wine and IMO is better (and cheaper). Still Linux really wasn't designed and IMO is even suitable for DAW applications. Windows has really taken the crown there by now and with the extensive work done on audio in WIN10 it will be even better.

Bitwig studio is good but i am using reaper (paid version) and it's more the virtual instruments that are windows/mac only so i'm stuck with microsoft

Could do that in WIN8.1 and maybe even in 7..

You could only select Manage in 7, I skipped 8 do I'm not sure.
Here's what it currently looks like.

Windows 8.1 really is fine, if you take a bit of time to customise it to fit your way of working. I never used a start menu addon either. The biggest help for me was to remove the Metro apps and pin my own most frequently used programs to the screen.

I'd never use Windows 7 now, it feels archaic to me - the Aero glass is really clunky and I really don't like the way some applications can turn it off on a whim.

Windows 10, well I'll install it and see when the time comes. Feels like I'll be going backwards though, having to learn to use a start menu again.

Yes in 8 and 8.1. No in 7.

Dual-boot with OS X on a MacBook Air - and Windows 10 build 10074 feels a lot faster.
(This is mainly because both Safari and Xcode are quite slow)

    Yeah my Dad wants to.

Windows 10 seems nice enough, but I think it'll be the last Windows 'desktop' os. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out, but it feels way too 'cloudy' and 'integrated' and 'touch friendly'.

Especially as more and more 'applications' are replaced with 'metro apps' and are available part of the store. Also, I dunno, but is there any API for interacting with running Metro Apps - like I can do with Win32API calls for regular apps?

Anyway, I've been a big fan of Linux and Windows for a while, but I'm always leaving Linux to play games and/or do Windows Development. Once I make the transition to being a web developer, I think I'll find most of my time is spent in Linux.

Yes in 8 and 8.1. No in 7.

There is a mode in windows 10 Tha gets rid of the start menu like windows 8 mate.

Don't do it, don't touch that **** until the year has elapsed and mullions (like millions but more) have tried it and gave it rave reviews and credit MS with prompt and effective trouble shooting and fixing of bugs. Would you try a first batch vaccine?
